  3. Sutton's predictions: Burnley v Man Citypublished at 11:49 BST 22 April

Chris Sutton smiling on a yellow and black background with 'Sutton's predictions' written below his face

I completely understood Manchester City's celebrations at full-time on Sunday.

Arsenal are their main rivals, there is a lot of needle between the two sides - like Erling Haaland and Gabriel for example - and they had just beaten them in a must-win game in the title race.

Now Pep Guardiola's side will be fully focused on getting the win they need here - and I don't just think City will win at Burnley, I think they will win well.

I know the Clarets went ahead against Nottingham Forest on Sunday but they ended up losing that one heavily.

I can see a similar scoreline here. You just feel like City's tails will be up - they have got some tough games ahead, but this should be comfortable for them.

Burnley will battle and they will give it a go but with what is at stake for City, and the quality they have in the final third, I am thinking they can boost their goal difference as well as collecting the three points.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-4

  4. Burnley v Man City: Key stats and talking pointspublished at 10:58 BST 22 April

Manchester City visit Turf Moor on Wednesday seeking a win that would take them to the top of the Premier League table - a result that would also relegate Burnley.

The omens are not good. Burnley have won just one of their 19 Premier League games against City and have lost the past 11, which is their longest-ever losing league run against another team.

Scott Parker's side are also winless in their past 12 home Premier League matches, the club's second-worst run without winning at Turf Moor in their league history.

And they come into this match on the back of a 4-1 capitulation at fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest. Head coach Parker said the boos from Burnley supporters at the City Ground were justified, admitting that they "saw a team just fall away".

That was Burnley's second-heaviest defeat of the season - topped only by the 5-1 thumping by City at Etihad Stadium in September. It could be another long 90 minutes for Clarets fans.

A list of the clubs with the worst Premier League home form this season.

Before City visited West Ham on 14 March, Pep Guardiola said his side's title hopes would be over if they dropped points. When they did just that in a 1-1 draw, it meant City were nine points adrift of Premier League leaders Arsenal, with one game in hand.

If City win at Burnley, they will take over at the top of the Premier League with both they and Arsenal having just five matches left to play.

It has been a fascinating and thrilling title run-in and there will surely be a few more twists yet before the Premier League season concludes on 24 May.

But City's win over Arsenal on Sunday suggests Guardiola has got his team going at just the right time and when it really matters, something he has made a habit of.

Since Mikel Arteta's first league game in charge of Arsenal in 2019, the Gunners have been top for 539 days to City's 453. Yet in that time, City have collected four Premier League titles while Arsenal have won none.

Number of days Arsenal and Man City have spent at the top of the table this season.

Manchester City are now just about everyone's favourites to win the Premier League.

They have all the buzz words on their side; momentum, experience and belief. They 'know' they can win the title because many of the group have done it before, Arsenal only 'hope' they are still capable.

City's win over Arsenal provides the ultimate dream sporting scenario. They both could well end the season on the same points total now and that provides the conditions for a total change in attitude.

If either team is 2-0 up with half an hour to go, they will still have to go at it full throttle for more goals to increase their goal difference.

This is an alien concept these days because players have to rest and recover, so time wasting, constant substitutions and controlled play are the order of the day when the game is ostensibly won with 20 minutes left to play.

But these rules no longer apply and I can't wait to see the outcome.

Winning 3-0, you might still send your goalkeeper up for late corners to get another goal - how brilliant will that be?

No City or Arsenal player will feign injury, take the ball into the corner or take an eternity organising a corner or a free-kick. They will have to keep it moving and keep trying to score more goals.

As a kid, I was brought up with this attitude at Celtic. The phrase was "score an early goal and press on regardless". For years this was considered quaint and almost naive - but from here on in, it is absolutely necessary.

  7. Arsenal win was 'toughest test yet'published at 16:06 BST 21 April

Pep Guardiola often speaks about players needing to go through tough experiences, even defeats, in order to go on and win the biggest of prizes.

Take the Champions League, for example, and the numerous seasons of hurt; from the late defeat to Tottenham, a heavy loss against Liverpool, a remarkable comeback from Real Madrid at the Bernabeu and Chelsea's win in the Porto final of 2021.

Manchester City's previous two matches against Arsenal were invaluable learning experiences for a club that is aiming to maintain their relentless winning trend and an educational period that has seen the team win silverware in the process.

But Sunday afternoon's 2-1 victory over the Gunners was the toughest test yet, not just of on-the-field quality and individual standards, but also of the squad's mental strength to overcome their main title rivals.

New faces and names without a Premier League medal to their name, or arguably experience of such high-stakes matches, stood up to the occasion and delivered. Perhaps none more so than Rayan Cherki, who continues to provide true footballing brilliance - in terms of technical quality, confidence, flair, goalscoring and goal-creating.

For this level of performance to come so early in the latest iteration of the City squad's development is a true testament to the first-team coaching staff and undoubtedly Guardiola.

Let's not forget this was up against an Arsenal side who have gone through the toughest of experiences in the Premier League by finishing second in successive campaigns. They've been there, experienced the hurt and they should have learned.

Whether City can truly push on now and win the Premier League title is an entirely different matter, with so much football still to play and some tough fixtures on the horizon. But Sunday was an exciting look at what this club has on its hands and a future set-up that remains a work in progress, despite the glory that could come in the immediate term.

  8. Guardiola on Rodri's injury, Stones' future and 'demanding' title racepublished at 13:04 BST 21 April

    Media caption,

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has been speaking to the media before Wednesday's Premier League game against Burnley at Turf Moor (20:00 BST).

Here are the key lines from his news conference:

    • Guardiola confirmed Rodri "will not be ready" for the visit to Burnley after going off late in Sunday's win over Arsenal, adding: "We'll see for next games - the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton or 12 days later for the Premier League game at Everton."

    • Ruben Dias is also "not ready yet".

    • He was asked whether there is any update on the future of John Stones, whose contract at the club runs out at the end of the season: "No. The only thing I can say is he is back training with us and this is the best news."

    • Reflecting on the win over the Gunners, Guardiola said: "We talked immediately after the game, do not lose the focus. Arsenal is top of the league and right now they would be the champions. The recovery is much less than the last two weeks. It's just two days. That is why I have to see how people are recovering. It's a demanding game we had, both emotionally and physically. But at the same time, we have six games left. We know exactly what is going to happen, when we get the result or if we don't get the result."

    • On the psychological aspects of the title race: "Both teams know what happened in the past. Both teams know they cannot lose or drop points. It will be difficult to recover. And our calendar is so demanding, especially when we have a game coming up against an opponent [Everton] that is really, really tough."

    • Guardiola thinks the title race is harder for the side chasing, stating: "It is more difficult, mentally and physically. What happened after Arsenal, we have to go to Burnley and perform at the level we have to do."

    • Guardiola praised the recent performances of Rodri and Bernardo Silva in a new pivot at the base of midfield: "In the last games, both of them have been really important. Both of them are experienced and both of them have a personality on the team - like man-marking. They are not young guys any more, they are experienced guys who have played a lot of these types of games and know how they must be played. They were exceptional [against Arsenal]."

  9. 'We're happy we're in the fight' - Silva on title racepublished at 12:11 BST 21 April

    Media caption,

Bernardo Silva: 'I'll be a Man City fan for life'

Captain Bernardo Silva has said the "next points count as much", as Manchester City look to go top of the Premier League with victory over Burnley on Wednesday.

Pep Guardiola's side knew anything but a win over Arsenal on Sunday would leave the fate of the title in the Gunners' hands and a 2-1 victory increased City's hopes of another league title.

Silva said: "That was a top game to play because of the importance of the game. We knew the crowd would show up. They were fantastic as well.

"And we also knew that this game, if we won, would put us in a position where we could fight with Arsenal for the title. If we didn't win, it would put Arsenal in a very, very good position to win the title, so we're happy.

"We're happy that we're in the fight, we're happy that after the last two or three weeks we can be in this position and now stay focused because, as I said, Arsenal are still top of the league. The next points count as much as this one, and we're very focused."

Sunday's game was Silva's first since it was announced he will be departing the club this summer.

On his decision to leave, he said: "[It was] a big decision that I took my time to take. A decision that was taken a long time ago, so today was emotional, but not that emotional because I've known for quite a long time that this is what I wanted for me. Now I just want to leave on a good note, to finish and give back to this club.

"I'm going to miss it; the football club and all my team-mates, the staff, the stadium, the fans. I just took a decision, this club will always be a big part of my life and, as I said, I'm going to be a City fan for life."

Manchester City will go to Hong Kong as part of their pre-season tour to prepare for the 2026-27 season.

City will face Serie A side Inter Milan in a repeat of the 2023 Champions League final at Kai Tak Stadium on Saturday, 1 August.

Pep Guardiola's side previously visited Hong Kong in 2019, when they beat local side Kitchee FC 6-1.

Peter Laundy, senior vice president of the City Football Group, said: "Our fans in Hong Kong and the wider region have always shown incredible loyalty and support for the club.

"The energy and passion we've experienced on previous visits has always been special and we're looking forward to sharing those moments once again with them later in the year, and an exciting fixture against Inter Milan."

  11. How has Guardiola changed?published at 08:25 BST 21 April

    Media caption,

Pep Guardiola is "changing and evolving", says former Premier League midfielder Andros Townsend.

Journalist Rory Smith considered the shape of Manchester City's attack but ex-Premier League striker Chris Sutton thinks the changes are being overthought.

"We previously talked about Erling Haaland and Gianluigi Donnarumma not being typical Guardiola players," Smith explained on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club. "But you could say the same thing about Rayan Cherki.

"Guardiola has never really had space in his teams for real mavericks, but that was always Cherki's reputation in France.

"He has always had the reputation of being a real individualist and not the sort of player an elite team could build around.

"I remember Guardiola trying to break Cherki a little bit earlier this season after his Rabona assist. He said Lionel Messi never did anything more complicated than necessary, but Cherki has been able to pick his way through that.

"Cherki has basically said that he will interpret football the way he wants to interpret it, and Guardiola's had the sense to realise that's how he will get the best out of him.

"Given the season we've had, which has been set piece heavy, it has been quite nice to see a full-on number 10 playmaker be the decisive player in a title race."

  13. 'City win leaves title race massively open'published at 15:02 BST 20 April

Pep Guardiola applauds the City fansImage source, Getty Images

Former Manchester City midfielder Michael Brown believes the title race is still "massively open", despite Pep Guardiola's side having the chance to move ahead of Arsenal with a win at Burnley in midweek.

"With the fixtures yet still yet to be organised, there's still a lot of different scenarios that can play out," he told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast.

"We saw Declan Rice saying it's not over and not done and I certainly believe that.

"Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City side will respect every single game - there's some tough ones along the way. Away from home too where City haven't been their best this season. Everyone is saying now they're back to their best and are going to go on an unbelievable run but there are still things there to be improved on.

"They are in their stride, they're in the mix. If you'd have said that a few months ago, or even a few weeks ago, when certain games we're getting thrown away you'd have said no chance of that. It's Arsenal who have let them back in unfortunately for them.

"It would be shame if Mikel Arteta, with the run and record he has had, ends without a title but you're coming up against Guardiola.

"It leaves it massively open, it's not done. The last few games depend on who you catch at the right time. Some will already be on the beach.

"It's fascinating and it's great that we have a proper title race."

  14. Haaland says Gabriel should have been sent offpublished at 14:21 BST 20 April

    Shamoon Hafez
    Manchester City reporter

Gabriel and Erling HaalandImage source, Getty Images

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland says Arsenal defender Gabriel should have been sent off during Sunday's Premier League meeting between the two sides.

Haaland and Gabriel had an ongoing battle throughout the game, with the Brazilian ripping the City player's undershirt at one point.

In the final 10 minutes, the pair went nose-to-nose after another coming-together, with Gabriel pushing his head into Haaland's face.

Both players were cautioned but Haaland felt the card should have been a different colour for his opposite number.

"I think that is a red card," said the Norwegian. "Most of you agree with me on this. If I go down, it's a red card. I would never do this. My father taught me this – stay on your feet. That's the reality.

"Maybe yes I should have gone down, maybe it would be easier, but I didn't and I got a yellow card for it."

Referring to the earlier incident, he said: "I think my shirt got a bit pulled. I didn't get the foul, this is the Premier League nowadays. It's wrestling here and there. A lot of duels. A lot of scratches.

"Sometimes my missus is not so happy about this, it looks a bit wrong! But that's the reality."

City's monumental 2-1 victory, in which Haaland scored a second-half winner, took them to within three points of leaders Arsenal and Pep Guardiola's men can go top with victory at Burnley on Wednesday.

"We're calm," added Haaland. "There are a few of us who have been in this situation before. A few new, a lot of new.

"It's about staying calm and thinking about what you can do."

We asked for your thoughts after Sunday's Premier League game between Manchester City and Arsenal.

Here are some of your comments:

    Man City fans

Olu: A gutsy performance. Professional and daring. Manchester City took the fight to Arsenal. Even after the mistake by Gianluigi Donnarumma, the City players went about their tasks.

Edward: Played well, sustained pressure, but Man City got lucky to get all the points. Arsenal gave them a real run for their money. Title is not over by a long shot. As much as City have hit a good patch they can also come unstuck, like any team.

Ejike: It was a display from a team willing to win. The hunger from the team is impressive. The young players playing as though they've been here previously. In general, the performance from Man City was really awesome. A performance worthy of title.

Gene: Rayan Cherki's goal was a masterclass in ball control, while Donnarumma's was exactly what not to do. While idling at what not to do, how was Gabriel not issued a straight red and why did VAR not look at the infraction? The boys played well with plenty of chances, while the Arsenal's defence became very frustrated as it showed with their outbursts. A very well deserved win with a tougher road until the end.

    Arsenal fans

Kevin: Again, we messed about passing backwards and sideways instead of attacking. City kept coming forward while we passed to and fro. The title is now in the hands of other team.

Richard: Mikel Arteta has taken this team as far as he can - if he doesn't win it this year he never will. Time for a change if he doesn't win the league.

Andy: Great performance by Arsenal just unlucky not to score a second. Went toe to toe with Manchester City all the way. With the matches they have left I think Arsenal will still win the title. Can't see City winning all there's and if they do (and with a better goal difference) they will deserve the title!

Natalie: So frustrating, as I think it was a pretty even match and Arsenal definitely didn't look like a team that have 'bottled it'. If the two chances that hit the post had gone in or Kai Havertz had scored at the end, the talk would be very different. I think, unfortunately, sometimes you do just need that little bit of luck and City have the experience to get the job done. I don't want to be negative, but I feel it will be another year that the title slips away.

  16. 'Three reasons' that edge City towards titlepublished at 09:49 BST 20 April

Graphic for Danny Murphy's BBC Sport column
    Media caption,

This title race is a long way from being over and the Arsenal players just have to keep together now.

They are still top and the worst-case scenario when Manchester City go to Burnley on Wednesday is that they go above Arsenal on goal difference.

But, despite their inconsistency for most of this campaign, there are three reasons I would edge towards City to win the title.

Firstly, they are out of Europe, which means they are fresher. That definitely helps at this stage of the season.

Another thing that makes me believe they will get over the line is Pep Guardiola seems to have found a settled XI, which is very unlike him.

That is probably because City are usually playing twice a week, every week, so he has to chop and change.

But for the past three matches since the international break, Guardiola's only change has been in goal - James Trafford played against Liverpool in the FA Cup, just as he did against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup final.

Whether it is by chance or by choice, Guardiola has found an XI that works together and seem to enjoy playing together too.

The front four has clicked, the central midfield combination of Rodri and Bernardo Silva is lovely - how can it not be with those two? - and their backline has really come together.

City have scored nine goals in those three games against Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal and conceded only one. Guardiola has a great bench if anyone gets injured, but his team picks itself at the moment.

On top of that, big players turn up in the big moments - and Erling Haaland will surely make a difference too.

  17. Is history about to repeat itself for Man City?published at 08:34 BST 20 April

    Shamoon Hafez
    Manchester City reporter

Last weekend might have given the Manchester City players and fans real hope after Arsenal suffered a shock home defeat by Bournemouth and Pep Guardiola's side capitalised with a statement win at Chelsea.

With six games remaining, City will now start to have real belief a seventh top-flight crown in the past nine years is within reach.

While Arsenal players slumped over at the end of Sunday's clash, City's convened in a huddle as supporters in the stands wildly celebrated a massive three points.

The travelling contingent made a quick exit from Etihad Stadium, while the City faithful jumped up and down to the tune of Milky's Just The Way You Are.

That song is becoming the soundtrack of City's season, with the words reworked into catchy chants for new signings Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo.

"The full-time celebration felt a bit much," former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy told BBC Sport. "If you are an Arsenal player, you are thinking 'hold on, we're still leading'. It was a heavy celebration, I was surprised with that.

"I get it in the emotional moment and I have been in those games where I have done it and you celebrate too much. It did seem like they were celebrating the title. By winning the game as a group, they probably thought now we have a chance.

"Even a draw was handing it to Arsenal, so I do get it."

A table showing Manchester City's results in their last 10 matches of the past four Premier League seasons
             Wins Draws Losses
2021-22 7 3 0
2022-23 9 1 0
2023-24 8 1 1
2024-25 7 3 0
Total: 31 8 1

Erling Haaland's second-half winner sparked a cacophony of noise after Cherki had given the hosts the lead, with Kai Havertz equalising in between following Gianluigi Donnarumma's error.

Both sides still have their destiny in their own hands in this gripping title race - even if City win all their remaining games it might not be enough as Arsenal could pip them on goal difference.

On paper, Arsenal's run-in looks more favourable as their five remaining games are against teams in the bottom half of the table.

City captain Bernardo Silva called the victory "very big" adding: "It puts us in a position if we win our game in hand we are on the same points.

"Two weeks ago this scenario didn't look very likely. I am happy we can be on the same points."

One aspect of the title race was settled on Sunday with the prospect of an end-of-season play-off now over - should the teams be level on points, goal difference and goals scored come 24 May, City will collect the title by worthy of a better head-to-head record.

Sunday's game was the latest into a season City had faced the league leaders since April 2012.

On that occasion they beat rivals Manchester United 1-0 at Etihad Stadium courtesy of Vincent Kompany's winner en route to securing their first Premier League title on goal difference.
