Four English Football League stars have exited the World Cup after DR Congo and Senegal suffered defeats in the last 32 on Wednesday.

West Ham right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Burnley defender Axel Tuanzebe were both in the starting line-up for DR Congo's 2-1 loss to England, the African side having led through a seventh-minute goal from Brian Cipenga.

Watford's Edo Kayembe came on as a DR Congo substitute in the 76th minute before Harry Kane netted a second goal to send the Three Lions through.

Meanwhile, Hammers left-back El-Hadji Malick Diouf featured for Senegal as an extra-time substitute in their game against Belgium but a controversial late penalty from Youri Tielemans knocked the Lions of Teranga out of the competition.

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez scored during Mexico's victory over Ecuador on Wednesday to set up a potential last-16 tie with England at the World Cup.

The 35-year-old doubled the host nation's lead by finding the top corner during the 2-0 win and Maxico will now face either the Three Lions or DR Congo on Monday at 01:00 BST for a place in the quarter-finals.

Wanderers team-mate David Moller Wolfe also secured a place in the last 16 after starting the match for Norway in their 2-1 win over Ivory Coast.

The defender will be joined by Egil Selvik of Watford and Derby County's Sondre Langas as the Norwegians head to New Jersey to play Brazil on Sunday at 21:00 BST.

However, there are some English Football League players who will not be continuing to feature in the tournament after yesterday's results.

Rams stopper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom was between the sticks for Sweden's knockout match against France on Tuesday but they succumbed to a 3-0 loss.

Stoke City keeper Viktor Johansson and Burnley defender Hjalmar Ekdal also return home following Sweden's loss without any tournament minutes under their belt.

Rob Edwards has turned down an approach from Burnley, leaving the Clarets still looking for a new manager.

Edwards, who was surprisingly sacked as Wolves head coach earlier this month, had been a candidate for the Turf Moor job.

He was under consideration even while Burnley pursued Craig Bellamy to replace Scott Parker, only for Bellamy to have a last-minute change of heart and opt to stay with Wales.

Former Nottingham Forest and Leicester manager Steve Cooper, who left Brondby in May, has been linked to the role but it is understood he is not looking to return to management this summer.

It means Burnley remain without a manager two months after Parker's departure following the club's relegation from the Premier League.

Burnley's squad were due to return for pre-season fitness checks on Monday and will travel to the United States for a tour next month, with their first game, against FC Cincinnati, on 11 July.

Edwards was available after his Wolves exit, which came after the club had backed the 43-year-old, despite relegation from the Premier League.

He joined from Middlesbrough in November, with the club turning to their former defender to stabilise them and bring them back to the top flight, but he was replaced by Portuguese coach Cesar Peixoto.

West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville saw his shot saved during a dramatic penalty shootout against Morocco to knock the Netherlands out of the World Cup on Tuesday.

Summerville had provided the assist for Cody Gakpo's opener in the 72nd minute, but Morocco equalised in the 91st to force extra time.

Both sides had missed two previous penalties before the 24-year-old stood up to take the fifth for the Dutch side; however Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou denied him, and Ismael Saibari then sealed the win for their opponents.

Burnley's Lyle Foster will also be heading home after South Africa succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Canada.

However, the win for the North American side does mean three English Football League players have made it through to the round of 16 in the World Cup.

Southampton striker Cyle Larin and Ali Ahmed of Norwich City both featured for Canada in the group stage but were unused substitutes for Sunday's knock-out match alongside Middlesbrough's Alfie Jones.

Canada next faces Morocco in Texas on Saturday at 18:00 BST.

  11. 'Everton astonished by flawed judgement'published at 16:58 BST 10 June

Football reporter Shamoon Hafez picture byline banner

This is the single biggest claim made by one club against another in Premier League history.

Four years on from being deducted points for breaching PSR rules, Everton continue to be punished for those indiscretions.

There is a feeling that the latest ruling makes it a triple jeopardy for one single sanction - the points deduction they received at the time, the financial implications of merit money reducing by dropping down the table and now this claim from Burnley.

Everton's hierarchy have reacted with astonishment at the panel's decision to award this compensation claim to the Clarets and feel the judgement is flawed and one that is hugely excessive.

While this took place on the watch of former owner Farhad Moshiri, the Friedkin Group are now having for fork out significant sum of money for the claim against the football club, and it is not known whether any contingencies were put in place to claim the sum back from the Iranian's business.

Nevertheless, it is understood this ruling has no impact on the current ownership's transfer plans for the summer or direction of the club. In fact, sources have said it will embolden them to drive Everton forward and back towards the top echelons of the Premier League.

There is a feeling, though, that the amount awarded is grossly unfair in comparison to the £10m fine handed to Chelsea in March after they admitted making £47m in secret payments to unregistered agents and the £5.5m punishment given to West Ham in 2007 over the transfers of Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano.

Tuesday's news came out of the blue as Everton were not given a date by which a ruling should be handed down - the same principle which applies to Manchester City and their 115 charges for allegedly breaching financial rules.

Everton have immediately appealed the decision, but feel it could potentially have huge implications for Premier League football as a whole if they are not successful.
