Southend United have signed Alfie Massey on loan from Millwall for the remainder of the current campaign.

The 20-year-old midfielder spent the first part of this season with fellow National League side Wealdstone, making 10 appearances.

Massey initially spent time in the academies at West Ham and Arsenal before progressing through Millwall's under-18s and under-21s teams.

Southend manager Kevin Maher told the club website: "Everyone we spoke to at Millwall speaks really highly of him, so it's nice to have him on board."

Braintree Town defender Tommy Smith has just returned from injury

Braintree Town defender Tommy Smith has been backed to swap a National League relegation battle for a World Cup summer.

The veteran New Zealand defender, 35, returned from injury to play his first full 90 minutes since November in the 1-1 draw against Morecambe last Saturday.

Smith will not join up with the Kiwis in Auckland during the upcoming international break for a final training camp and friendlies against Finland and Chile.

But Braintree manager Steve Pitt told BBC Essex that Smith remains part of New Zealand coach Darren Bazeley's plans and backed him to be on the plane to the USA in the summer.

"Darren Bazeley has said he would rather than Tommy stayed with us for the next training camp than actually play to benefit him for what lies ahead in the summer which is a real positive," said Pitt.

"He has obviously been a stalwart for New Zealand for a long long time – 15 years plus and is very well thought of off the pitch as well.

"His ambition is to be on that plane to the USA. From his point of view that is the prize and I think he is heading very positively towards it."

Braintree, who are three points from safety in 23rd place with eight games to go, host fifth-placed Scunthorpe to Cressing Road on Saturday.

Mason Terry has a goal and an assist for Braintree Town this season

Braintree Town goalkeeper Mason Terry has set his sights on playing in the EFL, the Premier League and ultimately representing his country.

The 21-year-old, on loan from West Ham, admits he has never been shy in setting himself challenging targets.

But after 15 man-of-the-match awards, a goal and last weekend an assist for the struggling National League side, he has definitely made an impact.

"My end goal is to represent my country, England," he told BBC Essex.

"Obviously it's to play in the Premier League for West Ham United and for the next six to 18 months it is to finish the season really strong and then be playing in the EFL. That is my next goal."

His goal came in the National League Cup quarter final against Truro City when his 92nd minute equaliser took the tie, which Braintree eventually lost on penalties, to extra time.

Last weekend he provided an assist to goalscorer Lewis Walker against Morecambe as Braintree grabbed a vital point in their relegation battle in the 97th minute with a 1-1 draw.

"I just had a feeling in myself I was going to be the hero again," he said. "Obviously after scoring at Truro about a month ago I just thought it was going to be me again.

"This time I was the provider to Lewis Walker who finished it really well."

Woking midfielder Tim Akinola has signed a new two-year-deal that will keep him at the club until 2028.

The 24-year-old has made 32 National League appearances so far this season, scoring once.

Akinola spent time in Arsenal's academy before leaving in 2023 to join Qatari side Al Bidda SC.

Since his return to England he has had spells at clubs including Chesterfield, Dagenham & Redbridge, Solihull Moors and Gateshead before joining Woking last summer.

Cardinals director of football Jody Brown said that other teams had been showing interest in Akinola before he committed to his new deal.

"There has been some genuine interest in Timmy from other clubs, including formal offers that we have turned down," Brown said.

"We feel that this deal is an illustration of the belief from both the club and the player in what can be achieved here at our football club during the coming seasons."

Solihull Moors have extended the loan of Coventry City midfielder Isaac Moore until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old has scored twice in five appearances, including a goal in Tuesday's 1-1 draw at Brackley Town.

Moore has yet to make a senior appearance for the Sky Blues, but played 28 games in league and cup for Forest Green Rovers earlier this season.

"Everyone at the club looks forward to continuing to work with Isaac over the coming weeks," said a Solihull statement.

  8. Southend wait on Scott-Morriss injury updatepublished at 15:02 GMT 18 March

Southend United boss Kevin Maher is hoping that a hip problem which forced full-back Gus Scott-Morriss off the pitch in Tuesday's win over National League leaders Rochdale is nothing serious.

As well as his defensive role, Scott-Morriss has scored 29 goals for the Shrimpers in the past two seasons - 12 of them in the current campaign.

"At half-time he stiffened up a bit but wanted to get out there for the second half," Maher told BBC Essex Sport.

"You could see it tightening up and we couldn't take any risks. We'll have to see how he settles down."

Southend are unbeaten in five games in March, but have another four to play before the end of the month - the next at Altrincham on Saturday.

  9. Wealdstone extend Spencer loanpublished at 17:18 GMT 17 March

Wealdstone have extended the loan of 20-year-old Reading midfielder Shay Spencer until the end of the season.

Spencer joined the Stones in January on an initial one-month deal but has appeared in nine National League games for them since then.

Solihull Moors have recalled striker Callum McFarlane from his loan spell at Oxford City.

The former Fulham youth forward, 22, had only extended his stay at the National League North club until the end of the season at the beginning of March.

But he will now return to the Moors after making eight appearances and scoring one goal - in what was his final game for The Hoops in Saturday's 3-1 win at Southport.

McFarlane, who joined Solihull from Premier League Fulham at the start of this season, spent two months on loan at the end of 2025 with Hereford FC, where he made seven appearances.
