  2. 'We did the job but can do much better'published at 16:59 GMT 15 March

FT: Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

    Manchester United

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was very important against a direct opponent. We had the same points, so getting this advantage from them is always good. We needed to win the game after the last game. Today we did the job, I still think we can do much better."

On what pleased him most: "In the Premier League every game is difficult. Villa are very well organised and know what they have to do. The plan against us is always very good. They have individual players that can make such a difference. It was about following our plan, we did it very well. We knew they had a high line and had to make sure our runs were on point. It looks easy but it is more difficult. If the timing is not perfect its very difficult. We did it today and we won the game.

On his 100th assist: "I am more pleased because I did it serving my team-mates. That is even better, giving joy to the others is very good. I am very happy I can help them to score and be happy. It's a huge achievement for me. Main achievement will be in the top spots at the end of the season."

  3. Man Utd in a 'really good place' - Rooneypublished at 16:58 GMT 15 March

    Wayne Rooney
Former Man Utd striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

This was a massive win. Getting back into the Champions League, they're in a strong position to get that and that helps financially for Manchester United moving forward.

Beating Villa and with Chelsea also losing yesterday, it puts them in a really good place.

  4. 'Calm nature of Carrick has been perfect'published at 16:56 GMT 15 March

FT: Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

    Dion Dublin
Former Man Utd & Aston Villa striker on BBC Radio 5 Live at Old Trafford

What is the point of going to the market and trying to find someone? He has gone in and put the arm around the players. The calm nature of Michael Carrick has been perfect for this football club.

  5. Players and fans have 'responded' to Carrickpublished at 16:55 GMT 15 March

FT: Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

    Wayne Rooney
Former Man Utd striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

The club has needed rebuilding a little bit in terms of getting back to the top and back to winning major trophies. Michael has been at the club for a long time, and he knows what that takes. He is a good manager, and he is showing that.

He is showing that there is no problem managing at this level. The players have responded to him, the fans have responded to him.

Why would you change it? Why would you try to find someone who is a risk like Roberto de Zerbi? For me, he has to get it.

  6. 'Moving forward there is a lot to play for'published at 16:53 GMT 15 March

FT: Man Utd 3-1 Aston Villa

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick, speaking to Sky Sports: "It feels good, it was a good performance in the main. A lot of things we are really happy with. We knew it was a big game coming into it to get back to winning ways and the boys responded really well."

On what changed at half time: "I was quite happy at half-time, it was one of those tight games. Sometimes you have to be a bit measured. We defended well as a team and were disciplined and the game opened up for us in the second half. We had the players to make the difference. I was pleased with the whole game."

On Casemiro's goal: "Casemiro and Bruno [Fernandes] have a good understanding. Some you can coach and some you leave to them to find the moment. The partnership they have got is pretty obvious. It was a great ball and a great header."

On importance of Bruno Fernandes: "He's had so many big moments, whether it's to score a goal or to make a pass, he is always there. He always puts himself forwards whether it's training or a game."

On his 100% record at Old Trafford: "It was a slightly different game today. Being so close in the league and making the small jump that we could if we won and off the back of a defeat, it was a small test in some ways and we haven't really had that with the games we've had to deal with. The boys dealt with it fantastically well. Moving forward there is a lot to play for."

  7. 'Not the nicest football game in the world'published at 16:51 GMT 15 March

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-0 Leeds

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We could have done better, but we know that sometimes it can be more difficult [playing 10 men]. In a few other games we have been in a similar situation. We were getting nervous and taking the wrong decisions. We weren't clinical enough in the final third.

"In the end, a point and another clean sheet. It is progress. We have to stay calm and stay in our structure because I feel we are losing our structure then."

How can you improve? "It's not just one topic. We have won many times with a deep block and I remember we won against Brighton with two red cards. It's not so easy, especially when Leeds are so organised and so physical.

"Sometimes you need a player who will win in a 1v1 situation, but to be honest we don't have plenty of them."

On Leeds' sending off: "I didn't know. The players behind me on the bench told me. It's clear that a second yellow is a red."

What were you and Daniel Farke talking about going in to half-time? "We were talking about that maybe this isn't the nicest football game in the world. At the end, a draw is fair. Credit to Leeds for how they defended. We take this point."

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery, speaking to Match of the Day: "Bad result. We played 90 minutes trying to continue in our mentality and the good form we had in Lille, but today was a huge challenge. The first half was equal. Second half we started poor, they dominated more and we needed to react and try to get control of the game."

On if mistakes are costing his team: "Yes. This is the key. When you can keep the ball and try to stop them with the ball, it's like we want. In 90 minutes a lot of things happen, some we did fantastic and some we missed momentum. Overall we needed to play smart with our idea.

"Manchester United are at a high level and to face them today was a huge challenge for us. We are competing and were with the same points, today we finish three points behind them. Keep going, we must use the points we had before to try to keep going, keep fighting and keep recovering tactically and with confidence."

  10. 'I'd trust my players with my life' - Farkepublished at 16:43 GMT 15 March

    FT: Crystal Palace 0-0 Leeds

    Leeds United

Leeds boss Daniel Farke, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I would trust my lads with my life. We are not perfect, but the mentality in the dressing room is second to none. In the circumstances, in a difficult away game, we defended the whole time and we didn't give any chances away. I think in the end, we had a higher expected goals than our opponents. Fantastic spirit, defending, clean sheet, and a point away."

On the red card: "Everyone in the stadium can see [it was the wrong decision]. It was doubtful if it was even a foul. For me, it was a clear mistake."

On the missed penalty: "You have to accept that you can miss the biggest chances. I am just proud of how we defended. Even in the second half, there was even moments where we thought we could win the game."

Surprised to see so many people calling for Carrick to be full time - short term thinking after a good run got Solskjaer the job and turned out he wasn't good enough. A club like Man United need to be thinking in decades, not weeks.

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick, speaking to Match of the Day: "I was pretty happy with a lot of things. We looked a good team. Credit to them, they had a couple of spells in the game but for the most part we were dangerous. It was a big game coming off the defeat. The boys reacted incredibly well."

"Two good teams. It's not always going to be all guns blazing, edge-of-your-seat stuff. We were in a good place at half-time and wanted a little bit more. We knew we were capable of it and the boys were fantastic to finish it off."

On Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro's partnership: "They have a really good understanding between them. Some things you can coach, some things you can't."

On Fernandes: "We're delighted to have him. He's proven over a period of time how impactful he is in the big moments. He's there all the time, he puts himself forward in training and games. You can always count on him to be there. It's a really good trait to have. He's been through ups and downs here but it's never knocked him. He was there today to make the difference."

On pole position for third place: "We can enjoy winning. It's a good feeling and something we want to keep getting used to. We are keeping a lid on it and understanding where we are and what it takes to win games like today. We are in a good position at the moment but still a lot to play for."

Tommy: Chelsea fan in peace.. Michael Carrick is doing brilliantly. should he be given the most coveted manager job in English club football? He’s not doing his chances any harm, but if Man Utd don’t give it to him and get the next appointment wrong and Carrick goes elsewhere and does well, the question will be why didn’t he get hired? I say give it to him, there’s nothing to lose, plus he knows the club.

  14. 'We were close to three points'published at 16:33 GMT 15 March

    FT: Nottingham Forest 0-0 Fulham

    Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva, speaking to Sky Sports: "First half was very balanced. We had one great chance from a wide free-kick. It probably needed a goal from one team or the other to open up. The first half wasn't very quick. The second half was more broken. It was very windy.

On keeping a clean sheet: "It was good. We knew it would be a tough game, even if they are in a position that doesn't reflect the individual quality that they have. The ability they have up front is at a very good level. We play to win games, it is our way but some games are very tight. It is important for us to keep the feeling of the clean sheet being positive.

"We were close to the three points. My approach is always the same, we didn't win, we got the point. Next week we have another game and we want to be back to winning ways at home before we go to the international break.

On talking with Nottingham Forest boss Vitor Pereira post-match: "With him and his staff. The people that we know are trying their best, like we are trying our best. It is always good to see familiar faces."

Leeds United's Ethan Ampadu, speaking to Sky Sports: "A good point. Away form home it's never easy and the conditions made it difficult for both teams. Going down to 10 men was difficult, but one thing you can say about anyone in a Leeds shirt is that they fight until the end and stick together. A good point in the end."

On the missed penalty: "We can take some frustrations but we always back Dom. He has won points for us this season and I'm sure he will in the remaining games. There were times where we could have been more clinical and nicked three points in a difficult game."

100% he should [get the job]. I have said this. I knew this was going to happen with Michael Carrick.

I know him very well. I know his character, his personality. It needed a calm head, but someone who knows the place and the players needed some love, and he has given them that.

We have seen the players play with more quality, more together as a team, and they look like a very strong team. For me, why would you change?

He has got the best winning percentage of any Manchester United manager after that many games. For me, he has to get the job.

Wayne: Encouraging signs from Manchester United. Still look worrying when they take a lead, needed two-goal lead to keep some level of sense in their play to close the game out. Carrick has done a great job so far, he seems to have a similar style as manager as he did as a player - quiet, considered & effective.
