Alessia Russo scored twice as Arsenal bounced back in the Women's Champions League to pick up a much-needed victory over Real Madrid.

The England international headed in both goals in the second half after Scotland midfielder Caroline Weir's superb volley put the visitors in front.

Renee Slegers' side were winless in their previous three matches, losing 3-2 to Bayern Munich last week and drawing with Tottenham and Chelsea in the league. Their form threatened to put Champions League knockout stage qualification at risk but victory over Real Madrid boosts their position with two league phase matches remaining.

Aside from Russo's goals, Arsenal did not create many chances, though record signing Olivia Smith was dangerous and tested goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez on a few occasions. Real Madrid forwards Linda Caicedo and Naomie Feller were a threat throughout but Arsenal improved in the second half and got the job done.

Arsenal host FC Twente after the international break before finishing their league phase campaign with a trip to OH Leuven. Only the top four teams out of 18 qualify automatically for the quarter-finals and the bottom five teams are eliminated.

Arsenal head coach Renee Slegers speaking to Disney+: "It wasn’t ideal going 1-0 down from a set piece at the end of first half but we stayed very calm.

"The coaches, tech staff and the players in the changing room spoke about details and we’re really happy with how the players took it on in the second half because it’s not an easy scenario where there was already pressure on us ahead of this game.

"The press is one of our big strengths, we tried to send them into areas, bait them into wide areas. Our nine and 10 are really impressive in those moments. We have to find the right triggers to go, the right moments. We were quite happy about things in the first half, it was more about the second phase and doubling down in those moments.

"If you represent Arsenal, you have to go for a win in every game."

Arsenal

Arsenal striker Alessia Russo speaking to Disney+: "It was a really important win. We've probably not had the results that we've wanted in the last block, but it was important to come here and pick up a result tonight in the Champions League, so we are really happy."

On feeling pressure as holders: "Maybe not pressure as such but more that our standards are really high and we want to be winning as much as possible. We know what it takes, we know we've got it in us, and I don't think we've seen it as consistently as we would have liked, so we were happy to get the win and three points."

On her equaliser: "When Chloe is on the pitch I know what kind of delivery she is looking to get in the box. We spoke about the areas I like to attack and the areas she likes to get the ball in, and yeah I just got on the end of it."

On the winning goal: "We work on corners all the time. Games can be defined by them. We've been on the right and wrong side of that in games, so we work on them a lot and it is nice when one of them comes off."

Real Madrid

Real Madrid midfielder Caroline Weir speaking to Disney+: "Nice to score but one goal wasn't really enough. We needed a bit more in the second half. We created a few more chances but Arsenal were always in the game and came out in the second half and scored two. So I'm a little bit disappointed. We played well but it wasn't quite enough tonight. Against a tough team like Arsenal it's always going to be difficult.

"They came out really aggressive in the second half, in the wide areas especially. On the transition we were always dangerous but we didn't quite take our chances. We had a few half chances and you don't get many of them so you need to take them, and unfortunately we didn't do that tonight. Then the set piece goal is disappointing."

On the league phase format: "As players it's really exciting. Every game is different. We are playing top teams every time in this format and points, whether that is a win or draw, is so important in the table. I'm enjoying it. It's cool to play different teams. Tough games, every game is so tough, but as a player it's exciting."

Wolfsburg came from a goal down to overwhelm Manchester United and end the English side's 100% record in the Women's Champions League this season.

In a frantic first half, Fridolina Rolfo's 14th-minute opener - her third goal in as many games in the competition - put United ahead against her former club.

But her fine header was cancelled out just three minutes later as Wolfsburg's Ella Peddemors capitalised on a mix-up between visiting goalkeeper Safia Middleton-Patel and captain Maya le Tissier.

An unintentional goal from Peddemors put the hosts in front in the 37th minute, with her delivery into the box evading everyone before squeezing past Middleton-Patel at the far post.

Lineth Beerensteyn rifled home a third for the hosts in the 45th minute, but Melvine Malard gave United hope by replying in first-half stoppage time.

However, Marc Skinner's side struggled to match the She-Wolves' intensity and Beerensteyn claimed her second, and her side's fourth in the 65th minute.

The Dutch forward shrugged off Julia Zigiotti Olme before sweeping a strike through the legs of Le Tissier and past Middleton-Patel.

United's defensive failings were again highlighted in added time when Jayde Riviere played a sloppy back-pass and Vivien Endemann latched on to it and rounded the keeper to slot home Wolfsburg's fifth goal.

On Russo's performance:

It's not just her goals, it is also the work rate she puts in on and off the ball. There was a time in the second half when the ball got booted long to her, she was surrounded by Real Madrid players, and she cushioned it down, spins and completely sells them, and then she is able to travel up the pitch.

She is a player with confidence, you can see that. Not just with putting the ball in the back of the net, and they were two beautiful headers by the way, it's her all round play and how well she leads the line.

It was one of those opportunities where Russo wanted to stake a claim. That number nine shirt is hers, she wants to play up front. The goals aside, two great headers, everything that she brings to the game is just so important to the way that Arsenal play. We saw the best of her tonight.

Eight-time champions Lyon fought back from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 at Juventus and that point takes Lyon top.

Barcelona are the only team with a 100% record, and they play at Stamford Bridge tomorrow against a Chelsea side that will move to first place with a victory.

Manchester United are fourth after suffering their first loss, 5-2 at Wolfsburg. Arsenal are now eighth and it is looking good for all three English teams to advance.

After six matches each, the top four jump straight into the last eight, with those fifth to 12th going into the play-offs, while 13th and below means you are out.
