It's going to be an emotional day at Hillsborough as Barry Bannan returns just a couple of weeks after leaving a club he became a legend for.

The Owls' problems have been well documented and Bannan's departure was probably the final straw for most fans who have had to endure a nightmare few months.

Millwall arrive here looking to pile on the misery and continue their quest for a play-off place.

Alex Neil is working wonders with the Lions and he has already stated that Bannan's arrival has given them something completely different.

They should get three points here and for the home fans the games this season simply don't matter.

They just want their takeover sorted soon and hopefully a bright new dawn awaits Wednesday.

It's said good times will always follow the bad times and my word Sheffield Wednesday have been through a bucket full of bad times in the last few months.

  4. Love rekindled as Bannan makes Hillsborough returnpublished at 14:52 GMT 14 February

On the day of love, one of football's great romances is set to be rekindled soon after it was abruptly ended.

After more than a decade of playing in the blue and white of Sheffield Wednesday, Barry Bannan made the switch to Millwall in January with Henrik Pedersen's side destined for League One.

The former Scotland international made 435 league appearances for the Owls and makes a quick return in just his third Championship game with his new club today, starting in Alex Neil's side.

Millwall have won four of their past six games and sit in the play-off spots with 15 matches of the season remaining.

A win in South Yorkshire will lift them up to third for the time being, with Ipswich and Hull not in league action having both played in the FA Cup fourth round last night.

The Owls are trying to end a run of nine consecutive defeats in all competitions. They've won just one of their past 10 matches against the Lions.

    QPR v Blackburn (15:00 GMT)

It's been a whirlwind 30 hours or so for new Blackburn boss Michael O'Neill.

The Northern Ireland head coach was named as Valerien Ismael's temporary replacement on Friday and his appointment has come too late to take charge of his first match today, with interim boss Damien Johnson in the dugout while O'Neill will be in the stands at Loftus Road.

O'Neill's first priority will be to steer Blackburn away from the Championship drop zone and he will juggle his duties at Ewood Park alongside Northern Ireland's preparations for their World Cup play-off semi-final against Italy next month.

Rovers, who have one win six, take on a QPR side who have lost one of their past six in the league.

  6. Two sides with play-off hopespublished at 14:48 GMT 14 February

    Preston v Watford (15:00 GMT)

Preston's 1-0 win over Portsmouth last Saturday moved them back to the fringes of the play-off places after a four-game winless run. They'll need to pick up their home form though having only won two of their past eight at Deepdale.

A win today would see them move into the top six.

Watford welcome their third head coach of the season as Ed Still takes charge of his first game and he's well aware of what the Championship brings.

"It's tough, it isn't the same as European football - it's super, super, super-competitive, I think it's the most competitive league across Europe," Still told the BBC's 72+ EFL podcast.

Italian midfielder Edoardo Bove is on the bench for Watford.

The 23-year-old has not played any first-team football since suffering a cardiac arrest while playing for Fiorentina against Inter Milan in Serie A in December 2024.

Watford, who are three points behind and five places below today's opponents in 12th, are winless in their past six games (D3 L3), failing to find the back of the net in the past three.

A big game for two play-off hopefuls.

  7. Tough test for both Pompey and Bladespublished at 14:46 GMT 14 February

Portsmouth v Sheff Utd (15:00 GMT)

Portsmouth's quest to avoid relegation has gathered momentum over the past two months with four wins and just two defeats in their past 10 games (D4).

Pompey narrowly lost 1-0 at Preston last weekend and are just one point above the drop but have at least two games in hand on the sides around them.

John Mousinho will be hoping his side can once again rely on their form at Fratton Park where they are unbeaten in five games in which they have taken 11 points.

They welcome a Sheffield United side who are in "top-of-the-table" form despite defeat at home by leaders Middlesbrough last time out, according to manager Chris Wilder.

And he's not far wrong. The Blades have won nine of their past 16 games (D2 L5), picking up 29 points in the process to climb from 22nd to 17th, and are eight points behind the play-off places.

Only Boro (32), Ipswich (31) and Norwich (30) have gained more points in that time and victory today could give United real belief that a top-six finish is still attainable.

It was a year ago to the day that John Eustace took charge of his first Derby County match.

It ended in a 4-0 defeat at Queens Park Rangers that dropped them into the relegation places.

Twelve months on and Eustace's Rams can move into the play-off places if they beat Swansea City.

It's been a remarkable turnaround under the 46-year-old, who has led Derby with a poker-faced expression no matter the circumstances.

During the week, Eustace spoke about the need to remain "virtually emotion free" in his job, and talked at length about what he has achieved in the past year and what he hopes to go on and build at the Rams.

You can read all about it here.

  9. Rams and Swans eyeing play-offs?published at 14:42 GMT 14 February

A very quick glance at the Championship standings will have you thinking Derby and Swansea are lingering in mid-table. But a closer look shows you just how tight this division is.

The Rams and Swans, who start the day in 11th and 15th respectively, could both make serious in-roads towards the play-off spots.

John Eustace's side suffered a first defeat in four with a 2-1 loss at home to promotion-chasing Ipswich last time out but had picked up 10 points from a possible 12 before that.

Meanwhile, Swansea have been much-improved since Vitor Matos took over in late November with eight wins from his 14 games (D1 L5) - and they have won three of their past four, including two on the bounce.

Derby are just two points off the top-six and could end the day there with a win, while the Swans are five points back from the play-off places.

Preston have a big chance to move into the top six this afternoon, with three of the four sides currently occupying the play-off places in FA Cup fourth-round action this weekend.

Their visitors Watford, despite being 12th, could also do so with a big win, while victory for 11th-placed Derby over Swansea would lift them to sixth if Preston fail to win.

Millwall will fancy their chances of strengthening their grip on a play-off spot at bottom club Sheffield Wednesday - and in doing so, move within three points of the automatic promotion places.

Blackburn and Porstmouth will both hope to boost their survival hopes in their respective games against QPR and Sheffield United.

Good afternoon to you all and happy Valentine’s Day if you celebrate.

Hopefully you get to spend some time with the one you love today (your football team, of course).

Just the five games in the Championship to bring you this afternoon with 11 of the 24 second tier sides in FA Cup fourth-round action this weekend and Middlesbrough’s top-of-the-table clash with Coventry not until Monday night.

That doesn’t mean we haven’t got some big games to look forward to though.
