Livingston left to rue decisions and stay bottom of division
Rangers earned a fourth successive Scottish Premiership win under head coach Danny Rohl, taking the points in controversial fashion to extend Livingston's long winless league run to 11 games.
Mohamed Diomande's late winner was initially deemed offside but overturned on review, with the visitors initially claiming goalkeeper Jerome Prior was fouled before the ball broke into the Ibrox midfielder's path.
Emmanuel Fernandez's thumping early header was levelled when Tete Yengi raced clear to score his first of the season before the striker was controversially denied a penalty when the ball struck Fernandez's arm minutes later.
Victory moves the Ibrox side to within nine points of leaders Hearts, having played the same number of games.
This was controversial and Livingston will no doubt feel aggrieved. David Martindale's side looked on course for a third draw in a row, but the late concession left them a point adrift of Dundee at the bottom with just a solitary league win.
Rohl spoke of improvement and confidence in his squad. Injuries to John Souttar and Derek Cornelius meant a centre-back pairing of Nasser Djiga and the rarely-seen Emmanuel Fernandez.
The latter made an instant impact with a perfectly-timed run that was finished with a towering header in off the crossbar. The perfect start for Rangers and him on just his second league start.
However, a procession to a straightforward three points didn't materialise as Livingston fought back and looked strong.
Yengi exposed Rangers' centre-backs and ran clear, coolly finishing under Jack Butland to level. Shortly after, it was so nearly worse for the home side.
Yengi saw his close-range shot divert off Fernandez's arm. It was on target, but a foul wasn't given. The guidance from VAR HQ was that the defender's arm was deemed to be in a natural position and the ball to be struck from close range.
Martindale and his team will likely disagree with that judgement. It was a crucial call that will likely be dissected, not least given referee Ross Hardie was not called over to the monitor to review.
As the game wore on, Livingston were comfortable for the large part.
Djeidi Gassama somehow missed on the counter before Yengi was superbly denied when clean in on Jack Butland.
In the dying seconds of injury time, substitute Robbie Muirhead fired just over as Diomande's late, controversial, tap-in ultimately proved the difference.

Rohl said he had to show players who hadn't featured much that he trusts them. He sees a team with improving self-confidence. He wants a team who aren't scared to make mistakes as he seeks improvement.
Fernandez's goal was emphatic. The problem is he and Djiga looked very fragile at the back. And repeatedly so. Injuries mean that pairing is likely for the foreseeable.
Rangers looked so ragged at times. They got the job done in the end but it was far from convincing.
The home side didn't move the ball quickly or stretch the game wide nearly enough. It played into Livingston's hands and suggested consistent improvement may take some time. They'll take the win, though.
Livingston haven't won in the league since their second outing in August. A couple of draws in their previous two outings offered something to build on but, having never beaten Rangers at Ibrox, this always seemed a tall order.
That they got level was to their credit. They will surely feel they should have had that penalty to take the lead at 1-1.
They should have gone ahead when Yengi raced clear. They also seemed aggrieved that Rangers' winner stood after an offside review and with Jerome Prior in goal claiming he'd be caught by Bojan Miovski.
So many positives for them to take but points make the difference. This was a hard luck story and Martindale's remonstrations with the officials at full-time said it all.
Rangers return to Europa League action looking for their first points of the campaign when they host Braga on Thursday (20:00 GMT). Falkirk then come to Ibrox next Sunday (14:00).
Livingston continue their quest to get Premiership points on the board when they host Aberdeen next Sunday (15:00).

Rangers have never lost in 25 previous home games against Livingston in all competitions (W22 D3); it’s the most they have faced a side at home without ever losing.
Livingston have lost 20 of their last 22 meetings with Rangers in all competitions (D2) since a 1-0 league victory in September 2018.
Rangers are unbeaten in their last 30 Scottish Premiership games against newly-promoted opponents (W26 D4), although their last defeat was to Livingston in September 2018 (0-1). At home, the Gers have won 13 of their last 15 league games against promoted sides (D2) since a 1-2 defeat to Hibernian in February 2018.
Rangers boss Danny Röhl has won all of his first three Scottish Premiership matches in charge of the club. Of Rangers’ last four permanent managers, (Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Michael Beale, Philippe Clement and Russell Martin) only Röhl’s predecessor Russell Martin failed to win all of his first four league matches in charge.
Livingston have won just one of their 12 Scottish Premiership matches this season (D5 L6), which is both the fewest of any team in the competition this season, and their second-fewest victories at this stage of a top-flight season in their history, ahead of only 2005-06 (0).
