Rayan Cherki is equally adept with both feet - Google tells me that's called ambipedal rather than ambidextrous.

It's the old Ousmane Dembele interview where he is asked if he is left-footed or right and the Frenchman says he is left-footed..."but shoots better with his right".

It's dealt with by a City defender then goes out on the other side for a throw in.

    Newcastle v Fulham (20:15 GMT)

The rain is pouring here at St James' Park and the conditions mirror the mood a little following Newcastle United's damaging derby defeat against Sunderland on Sunday.

It does not necessarily feel like a Carabao Cup quarter-final night under the lights for the holders with a few minutes to go until kick-off.

And captain Bruno Guimaraes knows his side have to produce a big response against Fulham tonight - and beyond.

"I have to say sorry to our fans," he writes in his programme notes. "You are right to be disappointed - it’s still a tough one to accept and we know it will take time to put it right.

"What we can do is show the right mentality, win our duels and prove we are the team we know we can be.”

A really nice loopy ball into the box from Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden takes a couple of touches but can't quite turn to get the shot away.

Brentford started the game well but have been completely on top in the last 15 minutes or so.

The Bees just can't get the ball back and even when they do it's almost immediately won back by a City player.

  7. A makeshift right-back for Newcastle?published at 20:05 GMT 17 December 2025

It looks like 19-year-old midfielder Lewis Miley could potentially line up at right-back tonight for Newcastle United.

The hosts are missing a host of defenders, including Dan Burn, Lewis Hall and Kieran Trippier, and Miley has been involved in the defensive drills in the warm-up.

Winger Jacob Murphy can also play at right-back, of course, but Miley came off the bench in Marseille last month to fill in at right-back.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe talked about the need to be "creative" ahead of this quarter-final, and how "all players need to be available to play different positions".

It highlights how light Newcastle are in one particular area of the field right now.

Absolutely joyful and triumphant. What a wonderful finish that was, right into the top corner. It's absolutely magnificent from Cherki. Goalkeeper has absolutely no chance. Brentford will be kicking themselves, Schade could have let it go for a goal kick, City had no one in the area.

Goodness me, what a rocket that is from Rayan Cherki.

Absolutely smashed into the top corner, he almost ripped the net off from the stanchions.

He then goes through a repertoire of Erling Haaland celebrations, pulling out the robot before sitting down for the meditation pose.

    Rayan Cherki (32 mins)

    Pick that out!

Manchester City have a corner and it's headed away by Kevin Schade but it's straight to the feet of Rayan Cherki 20-yards out.

He takes a touch to bring it down, shifts onto his right in acres of space and lets fly, smashing into the back of the net.

Brilliant finish and he pulls out the Erling Haaland celebration too.

Man City haven't found it as easy as they may have done in the past up against a very stubborn defence. Those three centre halves have two deep players in front to protect.

Some of Rayan Cherki's touches of the ball are so silky, he has been a joy to watch in recent weeks and is starting to get settled in a Man City shirt.

He will just need to keep a lid on some of those skills though - he will not want to get on the wrong side of boss Pep Guardiola.

Not sure why Leon Osman thinks that's a red card, Ake is close to Khusanov and would have been over to cover if Khusanov hadn't made the tackle.
