Manchester United won't make top [four] and won't win anything this season. They've had two cup finals - against Manchester City and Arsenal - and will now drastically drop off as these are the same players that have also cost two managers their jobs!

Interestingly, Manchester United (0.02%) had not previously been given any title chance by Opta's supercomputer.

But back-to-back wins over Manchester City and Arsenal under interim boss Michael Carrick has seen them break into the top four and move to within 12 points of the Gunners.

But seriously, they couldn't, could they?

  3. Opta's Premier League predictionspublished at 08:48 GMT 26 January

Despite Sunday's defeat at home to Manchester United, Opta still make Arsenal the overwhelming favourites to win the Premier League title (81.74%), based on projections of the remaining matches collated by their supercomputer.

After their victory at Newcastle this weekend, Aston Villa have been given a 9.39% chance of lifting the Premier League trophy for the first time.

Meanwhile, Manchester City, who picked up their first Premier League win of 2026 on Saturday, are being given an 8.71% chance of winning the league.

Only three other teams are being given a chance - however minimal - of winning the title.

    They are:

    • Fifth-placed Chelsea (0.10%)
    • Sixth-placed Liverpool (0.04%)
    • And fourth-placed Manchester United (0.02%)

A big component of United's win is their rest period. But let's not pretend Arsenal don't have a bench of players who would get into United's first team. They played nothing like they did at Inter midweek, Arteta must learn how to use his depth. Teams will copy United's methods.

There is no let-up in fixtures for Arsenal as they continue to battle it out in four different competitions over the next month.

Mikel Arteta's side will aim to bounce back from Sunday's disappointing defeat to Manchester United when they finish off their league phase campaign in the Champions League on Wednesday.

They top the Champions League table and are guaranteed direct entry into the last 16, but will want to maintain their 100% record with an eighth consecutive victory in the league phase at home to bottom side Kairat.

The Gunners then face four Premier League games before the end of February, as well as the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea and a fourth-round FA Cup tie at home to League One Wigan:

    • 28 Jan - Kairat (H - Champions League)
    • 31 Jan - Leeds (A)
    • 03 Feb - Chelsea (H - Carabao Cup semi-final second leg)
    • 07 Feb - Sunderland (H)
    • 12 Feb - Brentford (A)
    • 15 Feb - Wigan (H - FA Cup)
    • 22 Feb - Tottenham (A)

Manchester United were good, but is everyone forgetting the extra games Arsenal are playing at the moment? Not a single pundit seems to have mentioned the fact United only have this competition to worry about! Never mind beating Inter Milan AWAY in midweek.

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane is under no doubt that Arsenal's recent performances in the Premier League should be a cause for concern for Gunners manager Mikel Arteta.

He believes that the Arsenal players are "feeling the pressure" after Sunday's first home loss of the season left the Gunners without a win in three top-flight matches.

"It's pressure. The pressure was on Arsenal today," said Keane on Sky Sports.

"They'll have seen the other results, they're in a great position, they've got everything going for them... but it's pressure.

"They're feeling the pressure and it's how they deal with it over the next month or two. That's what's cost them over the last few years.

"I can't believe they don't look like a confident team for where they are in the league. They've got to get back to basics and start embracing this challenge instead of being frightened of it."

  8. A cause for concern?published at 08:20 GMT 26 January

Arsenal's Premier League title challenge has been built on a solid defence, with a league-high 11 clean sheets from their 23 matches played.

Bryan Mbeumo's first-half equaliser followed a rare defensive mix-up, while it also took two stunning strikes from Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha to breach Arsenal's back-line.

But should the fact that Arsenal conceded three goals in a match for the first time since December 2023 (v Luton) - ending a run of 121 matches across all competitions without conceding more than twice - be a cause for concern?

  9. 'Now we have to react and see what we are made of' - Artetapublished at 08:16 GMT 26 January

    Arsenal 2-3 Man Utd

Mikel Arteta told BBC Match of the Day that his Arsenal side were "not at our level and we paid the price".

He added: "When we lose a game I take the responsibility and I have to protect the players. We just gave it away. If you want to win you have to go through these moments and you can't expect to win every game, that's unrealistic.

"The margins are extremely small and we made them even smaller. Now we have to react and see what we are made of."

Michael Carrick, a lovely, understated, unconcieted man and manager. He deserves a full ongoing chance at the end of the season. The players obviously really like him and are so much happier and confident under his direction. Great stuff.

  14. Arsenal lead cut to four pointspublished at 07:51 GMT 26 January

When Arsenal took to the field at Nottingham Forest on 17 January, they did so knowing that victory would have put them nine points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Yet, nine days later, and the Gunners' cushion over rivals Manchester City and Aston Villa is just four points.

A goalless draw at Forest, followed by wins for City at home to Wolves and Villa at Newcastle, put the pressure on Arsenal before Sunday's game against Manchester United and Mikel Arteta's side were unable to respond...

    Arsenal 2-3 Man Utd

Matheus Cunha scored a dramatic late winner for Manchester United as they downed Premier League leaders Arsenal in a five-goal thriller at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday:

    • 1-0 (29 mins) - Arsenal took the lead when United defender Lisandro Martinez put the ball into his own net
    • 1-1 (37 mins) - Martin Zubimendi's loose pass put Bryan Mbeumo through on goal and he calmly went past David Raya before putting the ball into an empty net
    • 1-2 (50 mins) - United shocked the home side by taking the lead through a superb strike from Patrick Dorgu, who hammered in a thunderous effort off the underside of the crossbar
    • 2-2 (84 mins) - Second-half substitute Mikel Merino looked to have rescued at least a point when he bundled in from a corner in the 84th minute
    • 2-3 (87 mins) - But just three minutes later Cunha picked up a pass from Kobbie Mainoo and curled a superb strike into the bottom corner from about 25 yards out.
