Fantastic results for Manchester United in their last two games. However, need to have that same desire against the rest of the teams, not just the "rivals". Failure to beat Fulham next game and we are right back to where we started. Positive signs, however.

    Declan

United under Michael Carrick is a case of de ja vu to when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over. Positive start by playing compact and on the counter. What fell apart then and what I expect to happen once again is not being able to win when you’re in control - an inability to break down a defensive team.

You could see it straight after the third goal, Manchester United went and pressed high rather than sitting back and letting Arsenal put balls into the box. They tried to push high and keep the ball as far away from the penalty box as they could.

I think there is a big difference in all the players.

I am sure if Patrick Dorgu played at left-back rather than on the wing he would still have looked better under this regime.

Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo were brilliant, the two centre-backs - Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez - were brilliant again, the keeper - Senne Lammens - was really good. It's a game where you praise all the players for their performance.

What they are doing is they're showing a compactness, togetherness and a real grit to dig in.

They want to run, they want to work together. When you do that, you get your rewards.

They have worked hard, got the rewards and got the results.

  3. Key dates in the calendarpublished at 14:06 GMT 26 January

As we reported earlier, Opta is giving Manchester United a 0.02% chance of winning the Premier League title.

So there is still a chance then, United fans?

Arsenal remain in a strong position, with an 81.74% chance of lifting the trophy, while Aston Villa (9.39%) and Manchester City (8.71%) are still considered to be rank outsiders, despite closing the gap to just four points.

With that in mind, let's have a look at the games that could well define the title race and the quest for Champions League football?

    • Arsenal: Tottenham (A - 22 Feb), Chelsea (H - 1 Mar), Man City (A - 18 Apr)
    • Man City: Liverpool (A - 8 Feb), Chelsea (A - 11 Apr), Arsenal (H - 18 Apr), Aston Villa (H - 24 May)
    • Aston Villa: Chelsea (H - 4 Mar), Man Utd (A - 14 Mar), Liverpool (H - 17 May), Man City (A - 24 May)
    • Man Utd: Aston Villa (H - 14 Mar), Chelsea (A - 18 Apr), Liverpool (H - 2 May)

A four-point gap towards the end of January is nothing. I remember Manchester United pulling back Newcastle's 12-point lead (who also had a game in hand) in the middle of February 1996. 12pts eh Utd fans? No pressure or cups!?

    Ian

Manchester United for the title? In great form, team spirit, strong squad with no European football. Can easily make up 12 points in 15 games.

    Brian

I expect Arsenal to get 82+ points, which should secure the title. For Manchester United, 7+ wins (from 15 remaining games) should mean Europe of some kind. 10+ wins would put Carrick as #1 candidate for the permanent position and guarantee Champions League next season.

  5. Carrick brings 'swagger' back to Man Utdpublished at 13:51 GMT 26 January

This is going to hurt a little bit as I need to give Manchester United a huge amount of credit.

There is something different about this team right now.

There is something in their passing, their belief, there is almost a swagger when they have got the ball and I have not seen that in a United team for a long time.

Their gameplan was brilliant. The way they took their goals and came back after Arsenal went to 2-2.

They went up the other end and Matheus Cunha got that brilliant goal. There are certainly big signs for Michael Carrick to be very happy about.

Bryan Mbeumo has scored in both of Michael Carrick's first two games - the opener in the Manchester Derby and United's first goal at the Emirates.

As has Patrick Dorgu - who has been deployed further forward by the interim boss.

Carrick says Matheus Cunha, who scored the winner against Arsenal and provided the assist for United's second against Manchester City, has been "disappointed not to start" but has "used it in a really good way."

"He's had a real big impact and two huge moments," Carrick added.

Buzzing after the City game and delighted after yesterday's win. Trying not to get carried away though. When we have the lion's share of possession and need to break teams down, we struggle a lot more. It would be very us to follow up with a draw against Fulham on Sunday.

  9. What's next for Man Utd?published at 13:32 GMT 26 January

    All games Premier League

    Manchester United

Manchester United's only focus for the remainder of the season is on the Premier League, with no European football and early exits from the domestic cup competitions.

In total, United will only play 40 games this season - the fewest since the 1914-15 season, which was curtailed by the start of the First World War.

United only have four games in February - in comparison, neighbours Manchester City will play seven times next month.

    Manchester United's fixtures in February:

    • 01 Feb - Fulham (H)
    • 07 Feb - Tottenham (H)
    • 10 Feb - West Ham (A)
    • 23 Feb - Everton (A)

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire told Sky Sports that Michael Carrick had been "brilliant" since being named as United's caretaker head coach, steering the side to wins against Manchester City and Arsenal:

"Michael's [Carrick] come in, he's been brilliant with us, he's brought a fresh energy in, the group's really galvanised.

"Two tough games, everybody probably thinks we come away from them with not many points, but to win both is magnificent."

The 32-year-old England international was named player of the match for his performance in Sunday's 3-2 win at Emirates Stadium.

Whatever happens with the title, and Arsenal will probably win it, last night was a victory for football. Manchester United played the beautiful game. Some great play and wonderful goals. Arteta has turned Arsenal into an NFL team. It’s all about plays, percentages, territory, timeouts and there’s no individuality.

    Barry

Carrick just went back to basics, defending as a team and attacking as a team. The whole squad and backroom staff look united. They’ve brought a smile back to everybody’s faces. They’ve had less possession and controlled the games. See how they fare against lesser teams now, before passing judgement.

As I explained on Match of the Day, they look happier - their body language is good and they all want the ball - they all trust each other with the ball too, and there is visibly much more confidence.

I can understand why. It sounds quite simplistic but something that is not always talked about as much as it should be after a display and result like this, is the difference it makes when you put players in a formation that suits them, which they understand.

Here it was a 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1 shape with Fernandes as a 10 behind Mbeumo. Amad Diallo and Patrick Dorgu were both willing to get back, because they have played as wing-backs and have done that defensive role before.

That meant United were sometimes a back six when they had to be - but even then Diallo and Dorgu still knew they were wingers when their team had the ball.

Everyone knew their jobs, with Fernandes dropping in and helping Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro, who were screening the back four nicely.

On a basic level, United's shape and what their players were asked to do, meant they defended in numbers and then, when they got the chance - bang, they flew forward. With the pace they've got, they were so dangerous.

It was incredible to watch Manchester United.

The transformation in such a short space of time. As a Man Utd fan, we have struggled for a long time with different results.

People are sick and tired of us former players talking about the United DNA, but that is what it was.

You turn the game quickly, you counter-attack, you take chances, and you're not just sitting back.

Every time you win the ball you are attempting to create something.

  15. Cunha the Man Utd super-sub?published at 12:57 GMT 26 January

    Arsenal 2-3 Man Utd

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport Manchester United reporter

I am not sure Matheus Cunha will quite see it this way but he has turned into Michael Carrick's super-sub at Manchester United.

A £62.5m summer signing from Wolves, Cunha has started the last two United games on the bench as Carrick has picked Patrick Dorgu in the Brazilian's preferred left-sided attacking berth.

But in both games, Cunha has come on and made a massive impact.

He set up Dorgu for United's match-sealing second goal against Manchester City last weekend and yesterday came up with the brilliant winner at Arsenal.

As time goes on, it will be interesting to see if Cunha forces his way into Carrick's starting line-up.

Dorgu appeared to be suffering a slight hamstring problem when he went off yesterday, which may offer a way in.

But Carrick has to be pleased at the way Cunha has made such a big impact.

As always, we want to hear from you!

So far, we have heard from a range of fans who have given their views on Arsenal and Manchester United.

Connor came to the defence of the Gunners saying the north London club's schedule is much harsher than Man Utd's, hence the defeat.

Manchester Untied fan, Peter took a very diplomatic approach to his sides victory saying "two worldies" put an end to Arsenal's home unbeaten run.

But, there has been some nervous messages coming from some fans regarding Arsenal coughing up the title, again...

Rezaa urges Mikel Arteta to stop playing "too defensively" and Harry believes "Arteta must learn how to use his squad depth".

Finally, who said Arsenal were Set Piece FC? Ola sets the record straight on that!

This is a totally different United to the team we saw last month, they have found a way to enjoy winning and that can become addictive. Defeat when it comes will hit hard - how they react will determine their future. If Carrick stays this summer, United will challenge next season.

    Chris

Anyone else backing Man United to get Arsenal at the top? There are still 15 games to go with only 12 points behind Arsenal. That means four games for Arsenal to lose and four games for United to catch up! You do the maths! Anything can happen!

There is a calmness about the place.

I was watching the under-18s game on Friday night, and then I was watching the under-16s on Saturday morning, and they were all there again.

Michael Carrick, Steve Holland, Jason Wilcox - all the coaches were there.

What I have seen from them, and not just Michael, but from Jonny Evans as well, is a real calmness and a belief.

Michael said to me on Saturday morning how good the players were, and he felt he had to stop the session and bottle that up.

  20. Michael Carrick's fabulous startpublished at 12:36 GMT 26 January

    Arsenal 2-3 Man Utd

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport Manchester United reporter

Michael Carrick couldn't have made a better start to his time in charge of Manchester United.

But I suspect both Carrick - and the powerbrokers at Old Trafford - will not be getting carried away.

There has been a lot of talk about not making the same 'mistake' United did in appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after his excellent period as interim.

I don't agree with the premise Solskjaer failed - second and third and a Europa League final - is not failure. But if there is a lesson to be learned, it is not needing to appoint anyone until the season is over - Solskjaer was appointed permanently in March.

United set a public and private pre-season target of a European place. Director of football Jason Wilcox has spoken to the players about Champions League qualification.

These will remain the aims and, presumably, Carrick will be judged on whether he achieves it or not.

Carrick is talking about his players keeping their feet on the ground. I doubt he is demanding answers over his future from minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
