So what next for the victorious Spain team? A civic reception? Bus parade? Fans party?
All of the above.
The players will be received by King Felipe VI at Zarzuela Palace, on the outskirts of Madrid, according to reports.
It is not yet known whether the team will be met by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez at the government headquarters, La Moncloa, as he had to make a swift visit to Algeria.
Spain's World Cup winners will then enjoy an open-top bus parade, starting at Moncloa and heading to Cibeles square, the central government's representative in Madrid, Francisco Martin, told Spanish public television.
A ceremony involving the players will then be held at the square, the traditional gathering point for celebrations by the Spanish national team and its supporters.
Around one million people are expected to line the parade route, with additional security and transport measures planned to handle the crowds, Martin explained.
A total of 2,050 police officers and 400 Civil Guard personnel will be deployed, he added.

Former Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella makes his way into the waiting team bus.
The full-back does not have far to go to reach his new home after signing for Real Madrid in the close season.
He is the only Real player in this Spain squad.

What a night it has been for the Spain players.
We left them celebrating on the pitch at the New York New Jersey Stadium after being handed the World Cup trophy by US President Donald Trump.
A little over 12 hours later and they are landing back home in Spain to a heroes' welcome.
The players themselves will be flying on fumes right now, but their party is only just getting going...
