Joao Gomes joins Villa with a statistical profile that shows exactly why the club have targeted him. Last season he was one of the Premier League's most active ball winners. He ranked third for tackles and second for both duels contested and duels won.
He also finished eighth for interceptions, which highlights how often he broke up play and how consistently he operated in the heart of Wolves' midfield.
The Brazilian's intensity without the ball was just as impressive. Gomes made more than 1,800 attempts to close down opponents, which placed him among the league's busiest pressers.
Villa's new midfielder was also trusted to take the ball in tight areas for now‑relegated Wolves, ranking sixth in the league for passes received under pressure.
One underrated element is his reliability. The best ability is availability - and he featured in 35 of Wolves' 38 league games.

With Tielemans being sold, Villa had a gaping hole in their midfield, even if Boubacar Kamara is due to return from his own serious knee injury, which he suffered in January.
Gomes arrives with the experience and Premier League know-how to hit the ground running under manager Unai Emery.
Emery wants ready-made players equipped to understand his methods quickly and Gomes should fit the bill well.
A combative player, he made the third most tackles in the Premier League last season with 107, behind Everton's James Garner and Joao Palhinha, who was on loan at Tottenham from Bayern Munich and whom Villa also hold an interest in this summer.
Gomes' ball recoveries were the fourth highest in the division - he won possession 194 times.
With 116 Premier League appearances in his three and a half years at Molineux, there is plenty of experience as Villa move into a new era following last season's Europa League win.
Gomes arrives at a fair price with Villa needing to walk the financial tightrope to ensure they comply with Premier League and Uefa financial regulations.

We still do not know exactly what system Xabi Alonso will use, whether that is a back four or a back five. But with Morgan Rogers joining for £117m, he is likely to feature heavily.
There is no definitive indication yet of how Chelsea will use him, but they have been targeting a versatile, ready-made attacker and he certainly fits that profile.
My view is that Rogers will play in multiple positions, both with and without Cole Palmer, across the frontline and that he will be a key player.
As a right-footer, Rogers could feature regularly on the left if Palmer operates as a number 10, although Palmer is also capable of playing on the right.
They could also play together as dual number 10s if Alonso abandons traditional wingers in favour of a 3-4-3 system, which he used at Bayer Leverkusen during their Bundesliga title-winning campaign in 2023-24.

The nine-figure fees paid for Morgan Rogers, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali this summer illustrate how dramatically Premier League revenues have grown, allowing clubs to spend sums that would once have been unimaginable.
When Jack Grealish became Britain's first £100m footballer when joining Manchester City from Aston Villa in 2021, the transfer marked another milestone in the evolution of the market.
Only five years later, nine-figure deals are no longer viewed as extraordinary. They have become a familiar feature of Premier League transfer windows.
The next milestone may not be far away.
While no Premier League club has yet paid £200m for a player, football's financial ceiling continues to rise and the first transfer of that magnitude no longer feels beyond the realms of possibility.

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire says financial regulations can influence transfer decisions, although he cautions that they are not always the decisive factor.
"Financial regulations might be a driving force, but not necessarily," he says.
"Because clubs don't have to sell from a financial point of view, it means they can extract maximum value from their players."
Villa's sale of Rogers and Forest's decision to cash in on Anderson have become part of that wider discussion, illustrating how regulation now shapes recruitment and squad building across the Premier League.
Rather than viewing these deals simply as losing important players, clubs now see them as opportunities to reshape their squads.
Whether those replacements prove as successful is another matter.

Morgan Rogers' £117m move from Aston Villa to Chelsea perhaps best illustrates how today's market works.
Chelsea are buying a player from Villa, who have finished above them in three of the past four seasons. Traditionally, clubs might have been reluctant to strengthen a direct rival in those circumstances.
Instead, Chelsea simply met Villa's valuation.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire says one record fee - Manchester City's £116m deal for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson - quickly influences the next.
"It sets a benchmark," he says. "Forest wanted to be close to the record level because they felt Elliot Anderson was a critical player, a player very much in demand.
"We've then seen that surpassed by the Morgan Rogers fee - only slightly - but it allows the club to say, 'This is the record English signing'. So there's an element of bragging rights involved."

These are not the only major deals. Tottenham also agreed an £85m move for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, Barcelona paid £69m to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United, and Manchester United spent £50m on Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos.
It is the first transfer window in Premier League history to produce three £100m-plus signings - and there are still weeks to go before deadline day on 1 September.
During the 2025 summer window English top-flight clubs spent a record £3bn.
So why are transfer fees continuing to climb? Why are clubs paying record sums for players already playing in England? And why are more clubs willing to sell some of their biggest stars?
Good business from Paris St-Germain, that.
It certainly is when compared to some of the numbers that have been thrown around in the Premier League over the past few years, ever since Jack Grealish became the first £100m player in 2021.
But why are Premier League transfer fees rising at such an astronomical rate?

Aston Villa defender Lucas Digne is in Paris undergoing a medical before completing a move to European champions Paris St-Germain.
The 33-year-old finished his World Cup campaign with France this summer and is expected to sign a three-year contract at the Parc des Princes.
Digne is likely to provide competition for first-choice left-back Nuno Mendes. He is leaving Villa Park after a release clause, reportedly worth about £8.5m, was activated in his contract.

Tottenham can spend significant sums because under the new squad-cost ratio rules (SCR) they are allowed to spend up to 85% of their revenue on player costs - player wages, amortisation and agent fees etc.
In their last set of accounts (2024-25), wages and amortisation was only 61%, and this includes all salaries. Clubs do not separate between playing and non-playing staff, although Uefa says that normally about 75% of total wage costs go towards a club's first team.
In addition, Tottenham's new stadium, which can now host up to 30 non-football events a year at full capacity, is proving to be very beneficial.
At their old White Hart Lane ground, annual matchday revenue was £45m and commercial income - which includes concerts and NFL games - was £73m.
At the new stadium those figures were £126m and £277m, respectively, in 2024-25. The additional money coming into the club allows it to spend more under the SCR regime.
While the club has spent a lot of money this summer to date, transfer fees are amortised over the length of the contract, but limited to five years, so a £240m spend this summer equates to a £48m amortisation fee.
Tottenham's total revenue for 2024-25 was £565m. Under SCR rules they would be able to spend up to £480m a year on their squad.
Out of all the Premier League teams, Tottenham have been the busiest in the transfer market so far.
The north London club, who have finished 17th in each of the past two Premier League seasons, have spent more than £200m on new players.
The signing of Italy international Sandro Tonali from Newcastle for £100m earlier this month has been the headline addition for Roberto De Zerbi's side.
However, there have also been a number of other high-profile arrivals, including Mateus Fernandes from West Ham and Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton.
Spurs have balanced their big-money signings with a handful of shrewd free transfers, bringing in Premier League and Champions League winner Andy Robertson from Liverpool, as well as Marco Senesi from Bournemouth.
