Dan Burn's performance as heroic super-sub in England's rear-guard action added to the retro vibes that this team created.

    Think Terry Butcher's blood-soaked bandage...

England had just 33.2% possession, their lowest in a World Cup match on record since 1966, while their 49 clearances were their most in a World Cup game since making 54 against Belgium in the 1990 World Cup last-16.

Back to the England camp and an update from Thomas Tuchel on Jordan Henderson's injury in his post-match news conference: "It's a very special night for us. Mixed feelings because I am exhausted and emotional, but also sad because Jordan got injured, he injured his wrist and is at the hospital at the moment.

"It's a quite serious injury and it doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. I don't know the procedure, I just did the press and the doctor told me he is in hospital."

“We played hard and we played with so much emotion.” said Diego “I’m sad, but I’m also proud of their courage and the game that they played.”

England midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a "really bad" wrist injury while celebrating his side's dramatic World Cup last-16 win over Mexico, manager Thomas Tuchel said.

Henderson appeared to land awkwargdly after falling from the advertising hoardings at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium following England's 3-2 victory and was pictured leaving the pitch on a stretcher.

The 36-year-old Brentford midfielder's World Cup has been limited to a six-minute appearance at the end of England's Group L win over Panama.

"Jordan [Henderson] just fell over and injured his wrist. It looks really bad," said England manager Thomas Tuchel on BBC One after his side's win on Monday.

"It's a quite serious injury and it doesn't fit to the evening that Jordan is now not with us. The doctor told me he is in hospital."

The injury came after a stoppage-time incident that resulted in substitute Henderson being shown a yellow card while standing on the touchline.

As a working man in my sixties it was challenging to make it through to the delayed 2am kick-off but to quote Shakespeare's Henry VI "And gentlemen in England now a-bed shall think themselves accursed they were not here". An amazing game, England's tenacity and teamwork overcame the odds.

    Steve, Acklam

Henry V or Henry VI? Not going to quibble with you Steve, it's a cracking line. Old Bill knew a thing or two:

"We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; for he to-day that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother..."

  14. Who fills the 'cursed' right-back spot against Norway?published at 14:06 BST 6 July

Norway v England (Sat, 22:00 BST)

A lack of options, injuries and now a red card. It's been a nightmare for the Three Lions in the right back department.

Jarell Quansah's red card in England's 3-2 win over Mexico has left Thomas Tuchel with another selection dilemma ahead of Saturday's World Cup last-16 clash with Norway.

Thomas Tuchel previously said he was worried about his right-back position, which all started when Tino Livramento was forced to leave the squad with a calf issue before the World Cup began.

Reece James remains a major doubt after missing England's final training session ahead of the Mexico game.

The Chelsea defender has not featured in the past three matches after suffering a hamstring injury in the closing stages of the goalless draw with Ghana.

The 26-year-old has yet to train fully with the squad since picking up the injury and was the only player absent from Saturday's session in Mexico City.

The Football Association later confirmed he was following an individual training programme. There has been no update on James' condition since.

If James is unavailable and Quansah is suspended, Ezri Konsa could be the leading candidate to continue at right-back after filling in following Quansah's dismissal against Mexico.

That would likely see either Dan Burn or John Stones partner Marc Guehi in central defence.

Djed Spence is another option. He started at right-back against DR Congo before appearing off the bench against Mexico, although on his preferred left side.

With England's natural right-back options depleted, tell us who you would play at right-back by using the 'Get Involved' button.

Former Norwegian football player Markus Fjortoft told BBC News that playing England on Saturday is "the stuff of dreams" after his country waited 28 years to qualify for the tournament.

"We have a very romanticised relationship to English football since it was broadcast here in the 70s," said Fjortoft.

"English football and the English national team have always had a special place in our hearts. We've always tended to support England.

"For us as Norwegians to play England in a World Cup quarter-final, is the stuff of dreams.

"I think for the very first time, after beating Brazil, there's a small inkling that we can actually win the World Cup."

  18. England 'can play much better'- Tuchelpublished at 13:45 BST 6 July

Norway v England (Sat, 22:00 BST)

    England

Thomas Tuchel told BBC Sport that his England side are capable of playing better against Norway than they did against Mexico:

"I think we can play much better, there’s a lot we can do better.

"There's still a disconnect from us, from the best version of us that I see, from what we actually put on the pitch in terms of football, performance in terms of ball possession and finding spaces.

"There's no disconnect in committing and doing what is needed to overcome anything."

It’s unlikely England's defence will keep out Haaland, Messi and Mbappe, which may be the strikers of note [that they face] in next three games. So, the question will be: Can Kane and Bellingham outperform them? That’s possible, but doubtful.
