  2. Recap of what Trump saidpublished at 16:12 BST 6 July

USA v Belgium (Tues 01:00 BST)

Donald Trump confirmed he spoke to Fifa president Gianni Infantino about the red card decision, and that he asked Fifa to review the suspension.

Trump added that Balogun "didn't do anything wrong" and said Balogun not being able to play was "very unfair".

The US President said he has not spoken to the Belgian Prime Minister and concluded by saying Fifa "made the right decision" to revert the red card, comparing Balogun's absence to Messi, Ronaldo or Kane being unavailable for their countries.

  3. 'We have to have all the best players on the field'published at 16:00 BST 6 July

USA v Belgium (Tues, 01:00 BST)

Trump, asked whether he has spoken to the Belgian prime minister: "I didn't think of it, but I would. He's a good man.

"I will tell you this, the people in Belgium, if they win the game, they can be very proud. If they would win the game with a player missing it would be a different feeling. You can't do that.

"I'm very glad. All I did was ask for a review, I didn't say 'you have to do this'. This man is a smart, tough man. Gianni Infantino. He's a smart, tough man. And his stock has gone through the roof because the job he's done has been great.

"And I feel we have to have all the best players on the field. You can't take the best players."

  4. 'Wow, that's a lot of power'published at 15:52 BST 6 July

USA v Belgium (Tues, 01:00 BST)

Trump continues: "I think the referee's call was horrible and nobody talks about that. The referee's decision to red card - I didn't know what the hell a red card was. When I found out I said, 'you gotta be kidding'. This guy just hands out... 'ok, your best player's next going to play next week or in the next game'. I said 'wow, that's a lot of power'. Then I looked at his [the referee's] past, and... it wasn't so great."

  5. 'Referee made a call nobody could believe'published at 15:51 BST 6 July

USA v Belgium (Tues, 01:00 BST)

Trump continues: "This referee, who is a little bit suspect. If you check his past, I don't want to say that because I don't like to create controversy, but very suspect... if you like I'll provide you with the past.

"He made a call that nobody could believe. Even people on the other side, they were saying 'we got lucky, wow'."

  6. 'They made the right decision'published at 15:43 BST 6 July

USA v Belgium (Tues, 01:00 BST)

Trump continues: "All I did was I asked for a review because I didn't think it was a foul. Again, I'm good at this stuff. I didn't think it was a foul. I thought it was two great athletes who crashed into each other and got entangled. That was not a guy punching somebody in the face or anything that would be different.

"If they wouldn't allow a top player, maybe among the best players on the team, to play, I think it would have had a big stain and I related just that feeling. I didn't tell them what to do. I can't tell them what to do. I don't believe he [Infantino] made the decision, I think it was a committee that made the decision, and they made the right decision because number one it wasn't a foul, and you want to see a game with your best players. How would you feel if you took [Lionel] Messi, or [Cristiano] Ronaldo or Harry Kane out? You can't do that. We gotta have our best players and Belgium's got a great team by the way. We gotta have our best and they gotta have their best. And if we win or we lose, it's fair."

  7. 'I asked for a review by Fifa'published at 15:35 BST 6 July

USA v Belgium (Tues 01:00 BST)

Donald Trump confirms he asked Fifa to review the suspension: "It's one thing to penalise somebody for the game, but how do you penalise them for a game that hasn't been played yet? It's very unfair, you can't do that.

"Yes, I asked for a review by Fifa. I spoke to a man who is highly respected, who's level of respect has gone up tenfold, and he was good before this started but he really pushed it in this country. I'm the one who got them to do it [bring the World Cup to America]. It was not [Joe] Biden. I got the Olympics and I got the World Cup. We gave a little piece to Canada, a little piece to Mexico, but I got that myself."

  8. Red card 'very unfair'published at 15:31 BST 6 July

USA v Belgium (Tues, 01:00 BST)

Trump says Balogun is USA's best player, or one of their best players, adding: "He [Balogun] didn't do anything wrong. He's our best player, or one of our best players, and the referee gave him a red card. I didn't know what that meant. I didn't think it meant much.

"Then I started hearing that means he can't play in the next game - at least the next game. If it happened to another player that would have been unfair but when they take your best player or just about - they have some great players - and they say you can't play, that is very unfair."

  9. 'That wasn't a foul' - Trumppublished at 15:23 BST 6 July

    USA v Belgium

President Donald Trump confirms he spoke to Fifa president Gianni Infantino about the incident where Folarin Balogun was sent off: "I spoke to Gianni... I saw the play. I'm a person that loves sports and was a good athlete. I understand sports really well. Really well. That wasn't a foul. That was two guys running full speed that happened to crash into each other."

  10. Revoking Balogun ban 'fundamentally wrong'published at 15:21 BST 6 July

Norway v England (Sat, 22:00 BST)

The former chair of the Football Association has told the BBC that Fifa's decision to effectively revoke an American player's automatic ban was "fundamentally wrong".

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's World at One programme on Monday afternoon, David Bernstein, who managed the FA in the early 2010s, said: "This should really not be allowed to stand because it's a chaotic thing to do. It sort of throws Fifa back to the Sep Blatter days. It's just fundamentally wrong and terrible for football and completely contrary to the sort of positioning that Fifa tries to maintain.

"It's absolutely crucial that there is consistency and that Fifa's positioning is proper and consistent.

"A red card is a red card. We all see plenty of tough red cards... but that's not a reason for political interference to overturn them. But of course, Fifa gave gave Trump a peace prize the other month."

  11. Belgian FA 'astonished'published at 15:17 BST 6 July

USA v Belgium (Tues, 01:00 BST)

    Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA)

The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) said it is "astonished" by Fifa's decision and is "investigating all potential options" in response.

"In line with article 27 of the Fifa disciplinary code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year," world governing body Fifa said in a statement.

"If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement."

Folarin Balogun is available to play for the United States in their World Cup last-16 tie against Belgium after his one-game ban was suspended by Fifa following an intervention by US President Donald Trump.

The 25-year-old star striker, who is the US's top scorer at the tournament with three goals, was shown a straight red card for a foul on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic as the co-hosts won their last-32 tie 2-0.

Fifa said the automatic one-match ban would be suspended for a year. No reasoning behind the move was provided, beyond citing a rule which allows punishments to be suspended.

Trump thanked Fifa for "reversing a great injustice" in a post on Truth Social.

The BBC's US media partner CBS News confirmed that Balogun's reinstatement came after Trump called Fifa president Gianni Infantino on Thursday.

  13. Postpublished at 15:08 BST 6 July

USA v Belgium (Tues, 01:00 BST)

It's time to start looking ahead to this evening's round of 16 ties.

A few people wrote in yesterday asking how the 'altitude' and the 'Azteca' came to be the main characters in the build-up to England's game against Mexico.

In the event, neither proved to be the twelfth man for Mexico as was expected.

Today, again, the chatter around the hosts United States' upcoming knockout game against Belgium has been dominated by off-the-pitch affairs and the question of who will or won't be playing for the hosts this evening.

Let's remind ourselves of the Folarin Balogun saga so far...

But before we leave England's heroic win in Mexico behind, let's just savour a commentator's view of Jude Bellingham's two first-half goals...

  15. 'It's a dream come true' - Pickford's former PE teacherpublished at 14:58 BST 6 July

Norway v England (Sat, 22:00 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Jordan Pickford's former PE teacher believes his "win at all costs" attitude is one of the reasons he has become so successful.

Alan Fisher, who taught at Washington's St Robert of Newminster Catholic School, in Sunderland, told BBC Radio 5 Live he stayed up last night to watch his former pupil:

"It’s a dream come true as a PE teacher, having someone at the school who has reached the top of his game and has continued it for such a long time," said Fisher.

"I can't believe it's been eight years since we started talking about him playing for England.

"He was a local boy who wanted to win at all costs, in whatever sport he took part in. The PE staff at St Roberts enabled him to flourish."

On whether he takes any credit for Jordan's success: "He was a keeper at Sunderland but he played outfield a bit for school," he said.

"I don’t take any credit, I taught him nothing in terms of goalkeeping."

  16. Ecstatic England fans 'never doubted the boys'published at 14:57 BST 6 July

    Mexico 2-3 England

More than 200 people gathered at a Suffolk bar in the early hours to watch England's 3-2 win over Mexico.

There were ecstatic cheers at the Carbon Sports Bar in Stowmarket as the full-time whistle blew thousands of miles away at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City.

On Tuchel's comments on the referee and VAR team:

I think he has got that wrong. I don't know why he has gone so hard on that after such an impressive performance. I get it, against all the odds the red card and the penalties, but I don't think they were borderline decisions. I thought they were decent decisions in the end.

  18. 'Referees not good enough'- Tuchelpublished at 14:55 BST 6 July

    Mexico 2-3 England

    England

If there was one gripe though, it came from England manager Thomas Tuchel, who made some pretty explosive comments about the match officials and refereeing decisions:

"It's just not good enough. The referees are just not good enough, fourth officials are just not good enough. That's the bottom line.

"Three people in the VAR from South America in a match like this, if this is correct, VAR overturns... is this a clear and obvious error for the penalty? For sure not. They overturned a situation where he doesn't even give a foul. Referees just not good enough, fourth officials just not good enough."

  19. 'Pickford has played a starring role yet again'published at 14:53 BST 6 July

    Mexico 2-3 England

    Joe Hart
    Former England goalkeeper

It was an incredible performance from Pickford. I'm so, so pleased for him. Loved seeing the energy in his eyes at the end of the game, he has loved every single moment of this trip to Mexico.

He is a top keeper, he has made top saves all season, he is fully capable of it, but what else he brought to the game, the fingertip saves, coming out and winning crosses.

    He was absolutely brilliant.

When England made the decision down to 10 men to sit deep and defend with their lives, Pickford led. He has played a starring role yet again in a knockout game for England.

  20. 'Unreal' - Pickfordpublished at 14:52 BST 6 July

    Mexico 2-3 England

    England

England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, speaking to BBC Sport: "It was unreal. A lot of emotions, a lot of positives. We showed resilience, showed character. It wasn't pretty at times. It just had everything that puts you on the edge of your seat, that's what football's about. It shows our togetherness and it was a special night.

"I think you saw the standard I set myself tonight in producing saves in big moments, coming for crosses, it's where I aim to be and keep improving. Big moments in big times, that's where I am.

"I'm one of the most experienced lads in the group and when called upon you've got to roll your sleeves up. It was a great game for me and that's a standard in itself."
