Romelle Donovan's late winner gave a much-changed Sheffield United victory at Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Brentford loanee Donovan won it for the visitors, who had made nine changes from Saturday's 0-0 draw at Swansea City, after Tyrese Campbell's shot came back off the post.

The Blades had taken the lead in the first half when Tom Cannon finished well after being played in on goal by strike partner Campbell.

The home side levelled after the break when Dapo Afolayan, on as a first-half substitute for the injured Yuki Ohashi, cut inside off the left and struck a thunderous right-footed shot into the far corner.

Blackburn had made seven changes themselves from the side that started the 2-1 win over promotion hopefuls Middlesbrough on Saturday with Lucas Houghton, Frank Vare and Harvey Pates making their senior debuts across the match.

The Blades booked their place in this tie with a 3-0 win at League One Mansfield Town in the first round but have drawn both their opening league games this season 0-0 and managed just three shots on target in those games combined.

They could yet face far bigger challenges though after the company used to buy the club was placed into liquidation by the High Court last Wednesday, leaving them facing a potential 12-point deduction.

However, Chris Wilder's men put those off-field uncertainties to one side in Lancashire and went in front when Jairo Riedewald's hooked clearance out of midfield caught the home defence out of position and Campbell helped the ball through for former Everton man Cannon to finish with class.

Cannon had chances to add to the lead before the interval but fired over and saw a shot come back off the post.

Rovers made the Republic of Ireland international pay for those misses when Afolayan scored his first goal for the club with a beautiful effort from 20 yards out that left Adam Davies in the Blades goal with no chance.

Both teams pressed in search of a winner in the 90 minutes and the Blades got it when 19-year-old Donovan was in the right spot to convert on the rebound after Campbell's shot came back off the upright.

Blackburn host Queens Park Rangers on Saturday looking to add to their four points from two games, while the Blades travel to Cardiff City.
