Youri Tielemans scored a penalty late in extra time as Belgium produced a sensational comeback from two goals down to defeat Senegal in a dramatic last-32 World Cup tie.

The last-gasp victory helped them book a last-16 meeting with either the United States or Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Rudi Garcia's men had looked to be heading out as they trailed an impressive Senegal by two goals with only four minutes remaining of normal time.

But half-time substitute Romelu Lukaku flicked in Thomas Meunier's cross to give them a glimmer of hope.

And they made the most of the unexpected lifeline in the 89th minute as Leandro Trossard's cross into the box was missed by goalkeeper Mory Diaw and skipper Tielemans headed in to level at 2-2 and force extra time.

The Belgian pair were earlier seen having a heated argument before the second-half hydration break, with Lukaku stepping in to separate them.

Their comeback stunned Senegal after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr had given them a deserved 2-0 lead.

And having rescued themselves in normal time, Belgium snatched a controversial winner in the 125th minute.

After Dodi Lukebakio's shot brushed the crossbar, they were awarded a penalty for Lamine Camara's sliding challenge on Tielemans just before that chance following a video assistant referee (VAR) review that took seven minutes.

Up stepped Aston Villa midfielder Tielemans to calmly slot the spot-kick into the top corner and settle the outcome.

That latent arrogance from some in saying this should have been a routine win. Congo were a credit to themselves and gave England a game, which was great. I hope England keeps giving its fans some more emotional rollercoaster. Scream if needed but don't forget to enjoy the ride.

I think you have to give Thomas Tuchel so much credit for his in game management. So often for an England side we're guilty of defending our weaknesses rather than playing to our strengths and against Croatia in that final hydration break he made changes that allowed England to get that fourth goal.

The changes he made today, he made a slight formation change but in the last break he brought Eze on and almost to a three at the back.

The positivity of Thomas Tuchel is something that impresses me.

I thought the subs were outstanding when they came on.

Part of that is because Thomas Tuchel has been brave enough to not play Bukayo Saka.

In previous regimes, we have seen players play because they're the best players.

He has been brave enough to leave Saka on the bench, he has changed Gordon and Rashford. He has kept them hungry and kept them on their toes.

You get the rewards of that.

Anthony Gordon became the first man to provide two or more assists as a substitute in a World Cup game on record (since 1966).

Should he get his starting position back against Mexico?

One of England's biggest problems apart from the defence is the wingers. All the wingers are looking better coming on a sub. None of them have looked good starting the match. Congo were made to look decent when it should of been a routine win. Wake up England!

Funny you should say that, RP.

Yoane Wissa's miss late in the first half had an xG of 0.61.

DR Congo only recorded an xG of 0.81 in the whole game.

Basically, it was a big, big miss for a team who create little chances.

I think we need to play like we’re 1-0 down every game. After half time, we played so much more attacking it was refreshing to watch. The first Kane goal may have been a goalkeeper mistake but we deserved at least one of the shots we took in this game.
