  1. Balogun first to score and see red in knockout since Zidane headbuttpublished at 11:20 BST

It proved to be an evening of mixed fortunes for Balogun and his United States team-mates.

On one hand, they were able to celebrate a job well done as they recorded their first win over a European side in 11 matches.

But on the other, the big question now looms of just how Pochettino and his squad will negotiate a tough assignment against Belgium, without arguably their player of the tournament so far.

Balogun, 24, became the first player to score and be shown a red card in a World Cup knockout game since France's Zinedine Zidane against Italy in the 2006 final.

And with three goals in three games, the former Arsenal and England Under-21 striker, like the Frenchman, has almost become a talismanic figure for his country.

Wednesday's win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in San Francisco Bay Area Stadium was thoroughly deserved and earned Pochettino's side a date with Belgium in Seattle on Monday evening (01:00 BST on Tuesday).

It did not, however, come without a price.

Folarin Balogun, the 24-year-old former Arsenal youngster, who inspired the US to a thumping win over Paraguay with two goals to begin their campaign, added his third of the tournament to break the deadlock shortly before half-time.

He might have had a hat-trick, firing one effort wide of the near post, seeing an effort ruled out for offside and slicing a shot onto the bar from close range, but just after the hour mark his night, and potentially his World Cup was ended.

What looked an innocuous tussle with Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic for a looping ball down the left channel ended with the forward being shown a straight red card.

As Balogun attempted to shield the ball, Muharemovic managed to get in front of him, and as the forward's boot returned to the ground it landed on the back of the Bosnian's ankle, causing it to twist gruesomely.

In real time, and in all likelihood in reality, it looked entirely accidental, but Brazilian referee Raphael Claus was sent to the monitor to watch a super slow-motion replay, which gave him little choice but to brandish the red card.

It etched Balogun's name further into the record books.

On the night when he became just the third American to score three goals in a World Cup edition, he also became the fourth player to both score and be sent off in a knockout match, following Brazil's Garrincha in the 1962 semi-final, his compatriot Ronaldinho in the 2002 quarter-final against England, and France's Zinedine Zidane in the infamous 2006 final against Italy.

The sending-off brings an immediate one-game ban, ruling him out of the Belgium match, but it could yet be extended by Fifa officials to potentially rule him out of the quarter-final and semi-final, should the Americans make it.

They will have to live without star striker Balogun against Belgium in the next round, after he was sent off against Bosnia.

Folarin Balogun scored and was later sent off as the United States advanced past a lacklustre Bosnia-Herzegovina in Santa Clara to reach the last 16 of the World Cup.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino's side produced a display brimming with energy and creativity and more than merited their victory, which was sealed when Malik Tillman's late free-kick doubled their lead.

However, it took another moment from Balogun to set them on their way against a pragmatic opponent, who, until the 24-year-old was dismissed just after the hour mark, exhibited little attacking intent.

Having reacted quickest to steer Tillman's deflected pass past Bosnia goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj, the Monaco forward's evening was abruptly cut short when he became entangled with Tarik Muharemovic and his studs raked down the defender's calf towards his ankle.

That moment briefly threatened to spoil the mood for the majority of a partisan home crowd inside the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, but Tillman's curling effort all but ended Bosnia's hopes of a recovery.

The United States will now face Belgium in Seattle on Monday, 6 July (01:00 BST on Tuesday) for a place in the quarter-finals.

  11. Can Belgium's old guard lead one final charge?published at 10:48 BST

Only Courtois, De Bruyne, Meunier, Lukaku and 37-year-old Axel Witsel remain from the Belgium side that finished third in 2018.

But Wednesday's comeback was evidence that the remnants of their golden generation could still play an important role this time.

Meunier provided the cross for Lukaku's goal, while Courtois remains their number one.

And although De Bruyne was withdrawn after 58 minutes to his visible frustration, Belgium could still rely on the former Manchester City playmaker for creativity as they prepare for a last-16 meeting with co-hosts United States.

Lukaku, meanwhile, was not just the gamechanger but also the peacemaker as team-mates Tielemans and Trossard argued with each other during the hydration break in the second half.

"They are at each other's throats and it's boiling over, which is not a good look. Even the manager has come across too," Dublin said.

They might be far from perfect, but Belgium and their old guard have shown they still possess the quality and resilience to deliver at this World Cup.

Football is just crazy. I couldn't call any of this game.

Belgium were out as far as I was concerned and somehow they got out of it.

It worked out perfect for them. They haven't played well but in the moments they needed their big names to step up, they did.

Senegal found a way to lose the game.

    Great reaction for Belgium.

The penalty is a bit harsh and the referee took so long to look at the screen.

You want conviction in the referee's decision and he was hesitating for a long time.

One minute, Senegal were cruising into the last 16 of the World Cup.

The next, they were left wondering how another dream had slipped through their grasp.

Manager Pape Thiaw's side led 2018 semi-finalists Belgium 2-0 with only four minutes left of normal time, after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr.

But after outplaying their opponents, they somehow "found a way to lose the game", as ex-Republic of Ireland skipper Roy Keane put it on ITV.

Romelu Lukaku's 86th-minute goal sparked hope for Belgium and three minutes later, captain Youri Tielemans headed in an equaliser from Leandro Trossard's cross - the pair were earlier seen having a heated argument - to force extra time.

Then came the controversial penalty, awarded for Lamine Camara's challenge on Tielemans following a video assistant referee (VAR) review, and converted by the skipper himself 125 minutes in.

It condemned Senegal to further agony, having already endured the pain of being stripped of their Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) title earlier this year.

"Football is just crazy. I couldn't call any of this game," former England striker Dion Dublin told BBC Radio 5 Live.

  17. Gueye quits Senegal until coaching staff replacedpublished at 10:22 BST

    Belgium 3-2 Senegal (AET)

Senegal midfielder Pape Gueye says he will be "taking a break" from playing for his country while the current management is in charge.

The 27-year-old's decision follows Senegal, who are managed by Pape Thiaw, letting a 2-0 lead slip as they were dramatically beaten by Belgium in their last-32 tie at the World Cup.

Gueye, who plays for La Liga side Villarreal in Spain, started the game but was replaced by Lamine Camara after 66 minutes.

"I will come back to say a few words about the elimination... but I am announcing today that as long as this coaching staff is in place, I will be taking a break from the national team," Gueye, who has won 45 caps for Senegal and scored twice in their group-stage win over Iraq, said on social media.
