Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to TNT Sports: "It was a tough game. I thought we played well but it was tough for us."

Is it a mentality issue like Anthony Gordon suggested? "I don't know. Goals happen in games and we haven't defended well enough today. It was too easy for them to go through the middle of our defence [for the second goal]."

"I wasn't happy at half-time, not so much with the performance but there was a real lack of belief that we could score. You have to make things happen and really believe internally. Off the ball, we were getting close to them but not in that final yard."

"It leaves us in a good position [to qualify in the top eight]. It leaves it in our hands but we have two tough games to come. All we can do is focus back onto the Premier League where we are in a decent vein of form."

Will Joelinton be okay for the weekend: "I'm not sure. He felt something in his groin so we took him off straight away."

  3. 'Game was chaotic but super happy'published at 22:26 GMT 10 December 2025

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland, speaking to TNT Sports:

"Difficult to come here, it's a tough place. Game was a bit chaotic, we couldn't really control it. We get the win in the end, super happy.

"This is a place you want to play, these are games you want to play. With this new format in Champions League you get to play more games which is nice. I like it.

"It could have looked completely different today if we didn't win because of the Leverkusen defeat, this win is really important. Two more games left. We need to finish strong and hopefully we can be in the first eight because then we're through."

Boost seeing Kylian Mbappe not in team? "We know about their injuries, we have some too but they have many. You don't want anyone to be injured but we expected him to play. I expected to come up against Kylian today. But when a player like that is out - you're not happy because you want to play the best - but it gives you a bit of a psychological boost.

"You want to play the best players and after one minute [Raul] Asencio was trying to push me and beef with me which I like personally - I don't mind it. With Antonio Rudiger as well we have had some great battles, but today he wanted it too much and we got the penalty."

Chase down Arsenal in Premier League? "I don't like to speak to much on this because we should focus on ourselves and City have been so good at that for 10 years, don't think about others and focus on ourselves. Now we need to focus on Sunday - who is it? Palace on Sunday - games are coming fast. Look at the schedule it's incredible and it's about staying fit and taking it game by game and hopefully winning on Sunday."

Arsenal forward Noni Madueke, speaking to TNT Sports about his goals: "The first goal was really nice, second a tap in but the first one was sweet. Delighted with the result.

"I think the bare minimum I need to give to my team is threat. Obviously trying to score and be as decisive as possible, that's the next level I need to get to in terms of being consistently decisive for club and country. I think I can reach that level."

On the environment at Arsenal: "We're tight, that's the main thing. We want each other to do well, we know there are loads of minutes for all of us. It's about all of us as a collective, we know we all have a part to play. That's the good thing about this team.

On if it felt nice to score: "Last Champions League game I scored, nice to get another two, hopefully I can bring that form into the league."

On what Arsenal can achieve: "We're fighting on all fronts. I feel like we can win this competition and win the league, that has to be the aim. We're in a good place at the moment."

I just hope Xabi Alonso keeps his job. There is no point in hiring a young manager and giving him six months at the biggest club in the world. Zero point.

You may as well hire someone else who is older and a bit wiser. You have to stick with Alonso - you have to!

You have brought him in from Bayer Leverkusen where he did an incredible Job.

If they sack him, it will be a shocking decision. He just needs to be given time.

  7. 'Bernabeu is focusing on Alonso'published at 22:18 GMT 10 December 2025

    Juan Castro
Football Journalist for Marca on BBC Radio 5 Live

    On Xabi Alonso's future...

    I am very pessimistic.

It is true that it was not a ridiculous defeat because they competed, but another defeat at home, another defeat in a row.

It is quite difficult for a coach to hold this. We will see what happens, but now the ambience in the Bernabeu is focusing on Xabi Alonso. That is the truth.

We will see what is going on, but now I am 100% pessimistic.

  10. 'It all comes back to our mentality' - Gordonpublished at 22:14 GMT 10 December 2025

    Bayer Leverkusen 2-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle's Anthony Gordon, speaking to TNT Sports: "I don't know [how the game slipped away] but it's happening too many times, to be honest.

"The first half an hour was really poor but we reacted well and we came out well in the second half. The manager gave us a kick up the backside and we reacted well.

"Defensively we need to be more tight because we are conceding too many goals late in games. I don't know if that is fatigue, but it all comes back to mentality. We have to hold out in these games because that is what top teams do."

On goalscorer Lewis Miley: "He is a fantastic player and does well every time he comes on or when he starts. He has took a big leap this year with his physical and mental development. I am really happy for him."

Someone needs to ask Howe why whenever they take the lead they immediately sit back and invite pressure? Baffling to watch in both the league and the Champions League. Not the mentality of a top four club oozing quality. That’s for sure.

    Modecai

Luck has to change for Newcastle soon, post twice and a mad save. They outplayed Leverkusen in the second half. But once again, abysmal defending to let in another late goal. It’s like death and taxes at this point.

Newcastle were brilliant, particularly in the second half. They were brave in they way that they played at got their rewards for it.

They just couldn't see the game out. Leverkusen played their part and looked threatening going forward.

In the end, a good point for Newcastle.

  13. How it stands...published at 22:09 GMT 10 December 2025

Just two of the six Premier League clubs in the Champions League occupy top eight spots with two rounds of the games to go in the league phase.

Remember, the top eight after eight games automatically go through to the last 16. Teams that finish 9-24 go into a two-legged play-off. The rest are eliminated.

    Jonathan Woodgate

A lot more control in that second half of the game and Manchester City kept hold of the ball quite often.

They tried to find areas of the pitch where they could expose Real Madrid, and to be fair I think they deserve that result.

They stuck with it and they defended well.

  16. 'This goal will be with me forever'published at 22:05 GMT 10 December 2025

    Manchester City

Manchester City full-back Nico O'Reilly, speaking to TNT Sports:

"Such a good feeling. To come here, what an atmosphere, what a stadium, so tough to come here but we got the three points and that's the most important thing.

"Very special - over the moon. This goal will be with me forever but we got the three points and that's the most important thing."

Erling Haaland advice on the finish? "He's been giving me a few tips!"

On increased game time: "I'm loving it, taking it all in my stride, every game as it comes. Working hard every session and I'm loving it.

"We know how good Real are, we've played them over the last few seasons and they're so good. It shows how well we're playing at the minute and our form. We'll have a good chance [to reach the final].

"First few minutes I was a bit slow, I could've stopped that first goal, but I made up for it I think."

Magnificent performance and victory for Manchester City, they showed real (sorry) bottle to hit back from behind and then hold on to their lead.

Real Madrid came on strong at the end but City stood firm.

"We've got Guardiola," is currently ringing out around the Bernabeu. Chanting for an ex-Barca manager?! The locals aren't going to like that.
