  1. Players' frustrationspublished at 18:33 BST 22 April

Liam Rosenior had become a point of frustration, according to multiple figures close to Chelsea players.

The extent of that frustration varied. Some described him as a friendly character who means well, while others enjoyed working with him at his previous club, Strasbourg, part of the same BlueCo ownership group.

Others, notably several Spanish-speaking players, are understood to have preferred working under Maresca. That was reflected in interviews given by Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez.

Decisions to rotate goalkeepers and limit minutes for certain players, including Josh Acheampong, who often features briefly from the bench, have caused some discontent.

Perhaps most concerning is the atmosphere within the leadership group. One source inside Chelsea said senior players are often quiet when invited to give their views during near-daily team meetings.

Iain Franklin: Ridiculous club, if you sign a young manager on a long term contract at least give them a season to get a grip on the squad. Toxic club with toxic owners.

Liam Rosenior had overseen a run of five consecutive defeats, during which time his Chelsea side had failed to score a single goal.

It was the club's worst run of defeats without scoring since 1912 - the year that Titanic sank.

Chelsea's owners acted after the Blues' were completely outplayed in a 3-0 loss at Brighton on Tuesday, when they failed to muster a shot on target and finished with an xG of 0.4.

Liam Rosenior’s four-month reign at Chelsea will be remembered for an emphasis on “respecting the ball” and for his defence of the pre-match huddle that saw his starting XI encircle referee Paul Tierney.

The comical scenes before a defeat by Newcastle summed up the unfortunate ridicule faced by the 41-year-old from supporters during his first Premier League job. But it also marked the point at which a downturn in form began, one that would eventually lead to his downfall.

A five-game losing run without a goal culminated in a 3-0 defeat away at Brighton. Poor as the performance was, it forced the hand of the sporting directors, who met on Wednesday morning and decided to part company with their latest appointment.

Surely he should've been given more than 106 days? I think that this is appalling.

    Chris, Hull

Would any other manager have done better considering the situation he was thrown into? Maresca leaves for challenging owners, Rosenoir leaves for challenging players’ attitudes. Players on eight year contracts…

    Omar, UAE

You can't help but feel sorry for Rosenior. He couldn't say no that job, but he clearly wasn't ready for that job, and that lies squarely on the Chelsea board for not doing a proper search and going straight for him. Hope it doesn't ruin his career

Sources have told BBC Sport that Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, Fulham head coach Marco Silva and former Dortmund boss Edin Terzic are under consideration as possible replacements for Rosenior.

Iraola, 43, announced last week that he will leave Bournemouth at the end of the season, while Silva's contract at rivals Fulham is due to expire in July. Terzic, meanwhile, was under consideration by Tottenham to replace Thomas Frank when the Dane was sacked earlier this season.

He won't be too disappointed, I imagine the severance package will be good. It's a ridiculous scenario getting paid to get sacked, give me the job, I'll happily lose 5 on the trot and get sacked!

    Ben, Port Talbot

Been reading that because of the length of his contract, he will get a payout of approximately £24 MILLION. Is there another job on the planet that so richly rewards such utter, abject failure?

    Neil, Broadstairs

Ridiculous - why are they handing out these long contracts if they’re not going to trust the process? Admittedly, the results have been poor but they shouldn’t have taken a punt on a manager that hasn’t managed any big teams

  11. Why was Rosenior handed a five-and-a-half year deal?published at 18:07 BST 22 April

I was hearing comments from Chelsea's co-owner Behdad Eghbali - who is quite influential - saying that they are looking for stability and a manager to stay long term. That was just before the Manchester United defeat; two more defeats and they are making a change.

I think they are looking for a long-term appointment but they have decided Rosenior can't be the one.

  12. New year, new start - Chelsea appoint Roseniorpublished at 18:05 BST 22 April

Liam Rosneior was appointed as Chelsea's new head coach on 6 January 2026 after the departure of former club manager Enzo Maresca.

The 41-year-old Englishman joined the club from Ligue 1 side Strasbourg on a five-and-a-half-year deal, with the option of a further season.

Rosenior, a former right-back, had previously coached at two sides in the EFL.

The people making these appointments need to be held accountable too, it’s just become a joke.

    Geoff, South Africa

The Chelsea powers that be need to sack themselves. At least give the manager you picked a decent chance! Embarrassing behaviour from them.

    Matthew, Wrexham

It’s the sporting directors that should be sacked. Poor recruitment of players and managers, paid too much for injury prone, average players.

  14. Chelsea job has 'eaten Rosenior up'published at 17:59 BST 22 April

    Nizaar Kinsella
BBC Sport Chelsea reporter on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think this is a surprise, especially for those of us who watched the damaging 3-0 defeat to Brighton on Tuesday. It was one way traffic for the south coast team.

[His appointment] felt like a sensible decision, but you could have said 'he might know the system inside Chelsea, but he'd only managed Strasbroug, Hull City and Derby County.' Did he have the experience to handle a club like Chelsea?

I think the owners would have thought he could learn it on the job and develop but it has eaten him up. Ultimately, it shows you might need a bit of gravitas to manage a club at the top of English football.

  15. Instant impact followed by sharp decline - Rosenior's time at Chelseapublished at 17:56 BST 22 April

Liam Rosenior's 23 matches in charge of Chelsea featured an instant impact followed by sharp decline.

When the 41-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge, the club was on a four-game winless run in the Premier League, having picked up just three points from a possible 12.

Previous boss Enzo Maresca left his role on New Year's Day and while the managerless Blues kicked off 2026 with a 1-1 draw at Manchester City, led by under-21s coach Calum Macfarlane, the club's owners moved quickly to bring in Rosenior.

The former Hull City manager made the switch after a successful 63 games in charge of Ligue 1 side Strasbourg, which is part of the same Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo multi-club ownership group that controls Chelsea.

He led Chelsea to eight wins and two draws in his opening 12 matches, with Rosenior's only defeats coming in both legs of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal.

But another defeat to the Gunners at the start of March, this time in the Premier League, sparked a dramatic downturn in form.

Chelsea went on to win just two of Rosenior's final 11 games in charge, culminating in a fifth consecutive league defeat without scoring at Brighton - which proved to be the Englishman's last act as Blues boss.

  18. 'Indefensible' and 'unacceptable'published at 17:48 BST 22 April

Chelsea fans turned on Rosenior at Amex Stadium, while the head coach publicly criticised his players after the loss.

He said his his team's performance in the defeat by Brighton - a fifth successive league loss without scoring, which is their worst run for 114 years - was both "indefensible" and "unacceptable".

Chelsea are seventh in the Premier League, five points adrift of a top-five spot and Champions League qualification, with four matches remaining.

They face Leeds in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday at 15:00 BST.

Chelsea have confirmed Under-21's boss Calum McFarlane will take interim charge of the team until the end of the season.

"Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as Interim Head Coach until the end of the season with support from existing Club backroom staff, as we strive to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup," the club said.

"As the Club works to bring stability to the Head Coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment."

It will McFarlane's second spell as interim boss after he took charge for two games following Enzo Maresca's departure in January.
