Ronaldo's legacy is not defined by whether he won the World Cup, however his refusal to accept his own ability at the end of his career does affect how he is viewed.

One of football's great careers will finish without the biggest prize after Cristiano Ronaldo's final World Cup match for Portugal ended with a 1-0 last-16 defeat by Spain.

He was in tears as his World Cup story ended in Dallas with Mikel Merino's injury-time winner sending their neighbours through.

The 41-year-old five-time Ballon d'Or winner, five-time Champions League winner and Euro 2016 champion has scored a world-record 976 goals for his clubs and country.

He has scored at a record six World Cups. But the closest he got to winning it was when Portugal reached the semi-finals in his first tournament in 2006.

He had already announced this would be his final World Cup - but said afterwards, "I will meet the family and take decisions with a calm head" when asked if he would keep playing for his country.

Whether Portugal would have had a better chance of winning this World Cup without the pressure to start Al-Nassr's Ronaldo in each game will remain open to debate.

  5. Can anybody stop Spain?published at 11:02 BST

    Portugal 0-1 Spain

Spain are currently on a 35-game unbeaten streak in all competitions (26 wins, nine draws, no defeats).

That is tied for Spain's longest unbeaten run (in 2007-2009 and in 2018-2021).

Spain's journey since their 2010 World Cup triumph has not exactly been smooth sailing.

Although they retained the European Championship in 2012, their subsequent World Cup campaigns have brought little joy as they suffered back-to-back group-stage exits before being eliminated in the first knockout round four years ago.

But now, returning to the tournament as reigning European champions, Spain have a squad that looks capable of returning them to the pinnacle of world football.

"It wasn't a great display but you feel there is so much more to come from Spain," said former England striker Chris Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"The fact that they are not conceding as well is ominous for other teams. Their toughest test will come against France if they both win their games.

"I think Spain are capable of beating France but they'll have to be near perfect on the day."

But before that, De La Fuente's side will look to keep their good run going when they meet Belgium in the quarter-finals on Friday.

  7. Simon's 100% record continues against Portugalpublished at 10:56 BST

    Portugal 0-1 Spain

Spain's Unai Simon has now not conceded in 609 minutes at the World Cup dating back to the 2022 World Cup.

Simon is also the only goalkeeper at the 2026 World Cup to have a 100% save percentage (6 shots on goal, 6 saves).

Of goalkeepers with at least 500 minutes at a single World Cup, Unai Simon has the most saves in a single World Cup without conceding in the last 60 years.

Mikel Merino came off the bench to score an injury-time winner for Spain as they knocked Portugal - and Cristiano Ronaldo - out of the World Cup in a heavyweight last-16 tie in Dallas.

Spain had failed to create clear-cut openings in a poor second half before Ferran Torres played in the Arsenal midfielder, who slotted low past goalkeeper Diogo Costa in the 91st minute.

The 1-0 result was a repeat of their meeting at the same stage in 2010 and sets up a quarter-final tie with either co-hosts United States or Belgium in Los Angeles on Friday, 10 July (20:00 BST).

Portugal's defeat also ends 41-year-old Ronaldo's World Cup career after the superstar confirmed this tournament would be his last.

Spain squandered a gilt-edged chance after just three minutes as Dani Olmo's pass helped Mikel Oyarzabal get behind the defence, but the Real Sociedad striker dragged his effort wide.

Costa then produced a double save to deny Spanish duo Lamine Yamal and Alex Baena in quick succession as La Roja probed for an opener, but it was Portugal who went closest next.

Spain were saved by the woodwork in the 41st minute as Nuno Mendes' venomous left-foot strike took a deflection off Pedro Porro and rattled the crossbar. However, the game remained goalless at the break.

Roberto Martinez's side continued to grow into the game after the break, though Ronaldo cut a frustrated figure up front in a second half that produced little in the way of action in the final third.

Bruno Fernandes hit the side-netting in the 76th minute, while at the other end Olmo's shot from inside the box was blocked by a brave Ruben Dias before the two Spain substitutes combined to produce the match-winning moment.

    USA 1-4 Belgium

US President called Fifa to request that they reviewed Folarin Balogun's red card after the 25-year-old attacker was shown a straight red card for a foul on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic.

"I didn't think it was a foul," Trump said in a press briefing at the White House on Monday.

"I'm good at this stuff. I didn't think it was a foul.

"It was two great athletes that crashed into each other and got entangled.

"That was not a guy punching somebody in the face, that would be different."

USA midfielder Tyler Adams speaking after the game about the suspension of Folarin Balogun's ban:

"I think when it happened, it was just as much a surprise to us as it was to you.

"I don't think that noise or anything affected us by any means. If anything, it probably uplifted us in a sense."

Adams underplayed its impact, suggesting that it was not just Balogun who struggled:

"Was anyone a major presence on the field today?

"I think he tried today to be a presence and a nuisance, and at times, he was getting behind the ball and doing what he does.

"He just didn't have too many opportunities today."

    Wayne Rooney
Former England striker on BBC One

I think it's an absolute disgrace, I really do.

I know it's UEFA but I got a three-game ban before Euro 2012. I was due to miss the three group games and I got told if I went over to Switzerland and did a training session with a bunch of kids, my third game would get taken off. I agreed to do it because I didn't want a three-game ban - but I thought that was wrong.

For this to be suspended, they either take the red card away which is probably the right decision and then he can play. But to suspend it for a year? I think it's an absolute disgrace. Infantino should be ashamed of this.

The sportsmanship of this game is in question here.

If I'm USA's opponent, I'd be absolutely fuming. It's wrong in every way.
