Pep Guardiola just heaped praise on Brentford and their manager Thomas Frank in his press conference.

Guardiola says Brentford have always given Manchester City problems and that they execute Frank's game plan to perfection.

Asked if he is surprised that Frank is yet to join one of Europe's biggest clubs, Guardiola said: "It is a question of time.

"Thomas is one of the best. It is going to happen."

It's not the hardest hit shot from McNeil because we know he can hit them. The goalkeeper will be disappointed. It's a decent strike.

Amadou Onana needed a bit of treatment after Dwight McNeil picked his pocket. The video assistant referee did have a look at it but said no foul.

Everton have been deep and they have suffered chances against them. The first time into the Villa half and Dwight McNeil presses Amadou Onana - it doesn't look like a foul on the monitor.

McNeil still has a lot of work to do, he strikes it across Emi Martinez and it's a fantastic finish.

That is the ultimate smash and grab.

The Everton fans are absolutely ecstatic and there's another rendition of "Ama, Amadou..." but this time from the travelling supporters.

They enjoyed that one, seeing their former player picked off by Dwight McNeil.

Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank, speaking to MOTD: "Standing here I am a combination of extremely disappointed we didn't get something out of this game but on the other hand very proud.

"The first 25 minutes was world class, we were better than Manchester City. Second half they were more on top and made it difficult. A point would have been fair and not often teams can come here and say that.

"You could say if we need to win here we needed to take more of the chances we had in the first half.

"I respect Pep Guardiola very much and a lot of the reasons I do is because he made tactical changes at half time and then he is not too proud to put the ball down in the corner because they need to win. We must have done something right today.

"This is a fantastic group to work with and we need to keep doing this.

"Haaland is a fantastic striker, he got a little bit of help today with a deflection and a mistake we don't usually do."

There are jeers from the Everton fans in the direction of former player Amadou Onana when he gets on the ball.

The Aston Villa supporters respond with a chant of, "Ama, Amadou, Ama, Amadou..."

Utter dominance from Aston Villa so far. Lucas Digne has been busy down the left-hand side and he squares across for Ollie Watkins but the England striker, sliding in at the near post, can't meet the cross.

Watkins is still searching for his first Premier League goal this season.

Manchester City

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola: "I am a big fan of Thomas Frank. I don't remember in eight or nine years have a team playing the way they played. We were lucky with the deflection because they deserved 1-0.

"We struggled a lot to read when to shoot and press. We were lucky to find the goals but in the second half we were better and probably deserved to score more goals.

"We needed that to feel how difficicult everything is, how difficult the Premier League is every game.

"People say City so strong but the Premier League is so difficult. Today was the real proof.

"I am a big fan of Brentford. They play long balls but they have ability to play as well. I give a lot of credit to my players, from where we come from in the past but to still be able to suffer. I prefer to win that way than four or five nil. We need that."

On Haaland: "Erling in the space is so difficult to control. It was a tough week for him but yesterday it was a bit better, we tried to help him."

You can almost feel the nervousness amongst these Everton players.

They try to press high, but Villa have broken the press a couple of times.

It is real important for Sean Dyche and these Everton players to stay in the game - they're really fragile at the moment.

A teasing ball into the box from Lucas Digne and Ollie Watkins rises highest to meet the header but it's blocked off the line by Iliman Ndiaye.

More right place, right time than brilliant defending.
