  1. Chelsea captain Bright announces immediate retirementpublished at 14:26 BST 3 May

    Leicester City v Chelsea (14:30)

Huge news broke from the Chelsea camp on Wednesday as captain Millie Bright announced her immediate retirement from football.

The 32 year old defender holds the Women's Super League appearances record (216), though she's struggled to feature consistently in recent seasons due to various injury issues, and hasn't played for the Blues since February because of an ankle problem.

She told BBC Sport: "Representing Chelsea over the last 12 years has been everything to me, but I'm now ready to say goodbye. I'm ready to go into a new era. I'm always going to be Chelsea, but just in a different way."

It was later confirmed by the club that the former England international will be taking on a new role as a club ambassador, and will retain her position as a trustee of the Chelsea foundation.

Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor has warned against any complacency when her side travel to face bottom of the table Leicester City this afternoon.

The Foxes' 7-0 drubbing at Arsenal in midweek meant that they have been consigned to the end of season relegation play-off, though Bompastor insists her side must approach the game with the right mentality if they are to secure the points they need to qualify for next season's Champions League.

"In football, you never have an easy game," said Bompastor in her pre-match press conference. "You need to make sure you go into every game with the right mentality. Every team in this league is difficult to play against and I'm not expecting something different on Sunday.

"They know they are going to play the play-off game so, in terms of confidence, that's probably not the best as well, but all these things being said, we need to focus on ourselves."

Leicester City boss Rick Passmoor insists that the team must try to build confidence in the coming weeks ahead of their crucial relegation play-off, starting against soon to be dethroned champions Chelsea.

"It’s not a time to sulk," he told the media on Saturday. "It will be a tough challenge over these three games, but we know what we need to do."

"For myself, it’s also an opportunity to continue bringing positivity to the group to make sure they understand the situation we’re in, but head into it with confidence.”

Passmoor added that he believes that the play-off, scheduled to take place on against WSL 2 side Charlton Athletic on 23 May, presents a second chance for the club to maintain their top flight status.

He added: "How I see it, is that you’ve got another bite of the cherry. It’s another challenge and opportunity which we need to make the most of. It's a second chance to retain our status as a WSL1 team."

What a difference 17 months makes.

The last time Leicester City hosted Chelsea at King Power stadium in the Women's Super League was back in December 2024, when they held the champions to a 1-1 draw.

The Blues went on to win the domestic Treble unbeaten, while the Foxes, one of three teams to take points off them in the league, finished the campaign comfortably in tenth.

This time round Chelsea are arriving on Filbert Way with their champions status soon to be removed, and Leicester have already been confirmed as the side to contest the relegation play-off in May.

The sad truth for both teams is that their fates have been long in the making.

Three points today would do little to change the outcome of either club's campaign, though it would bring some much needed positivity heading into the final weeks and beyond.

  8. 'You have to dig in, you have to suffer'published at 14:19 BST 3 May

    FT: Man City 1-0 Liverpool

    Natasha Dowie
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Winning a title is never smooth, and if you are going to lift a trophy, you have to dig in, you have to suffer, and did City suffer today. They suffered for the first 45 minutes of the game, and they stayed in it, they fought, and let’s be honest the big difference has been the ruthlessness.

All City have needed was one chance, and it didn’t come from who I expected it to, Knaak, and it was probably the one error that Folk made all game, but Liverpool will look back on this game, and think six or seven opportunities where they didn’t really make the Man City keeper work.

  9. 'We wanted to make a statement'published at 14:14 BST 3 May

    FT: Man City 1-0 Liverpool

    Manchester City

Manchester City winger Lauren Hemp, speaking to Sky Sports: "Liverpool were very good, they caused us a lot of problems, especially at the start. It's so hard to compose yourself when a goal like that goes in.

"We were pushing in the second half, we took the level up massively, we were creating so many chances and in the end, we deserved it.

"We've worked so hard this season and moments like that make it worth it. Obviously we've still got more to go, we've still got a game next week to get us into a final and the pressure gets piled up but this team is incredible and I'm so pleased to be part of it."

On what result gives City: "It gives us confidence going into the next game. We wanted to make a statement in the league today because we were so frustrated with last week's performance.

"We've been working hard all week and it's what this group deserves. Now we can sit back and watch a few games unfold."

  10. 'It’s written in the stars for City'published at 14:12 BST 3 May

    FT: Man City 1-0 Liverpool

    Natasha Dowie
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Man City were probing in the second half, and you thought that something was coming, but you felt as if their best opportunities had gone missing through Bunny Shaw. She had three or four clear headers where she would normally put in the back of the net.

You saw the likes of Lauren Hemp hand on head, you saw the likes of Alex Greenwood thinking is it not going to be our day, but then they get that one opportunity.

It’s not the cleanest of headers, it should be a comfortable save for Folk, and it ends up trickling into the back of the net. That’s when I think it’s written in the stars for City this year.

They are going to go on and win it now, because for so much of this game, you felt as if they were going to throw it away.

Incredible result for Man City. Sometime when you have these runs and you are going for the title you have these games that are sticky. Credit to Liverpool, they dug in and defended really well, and they could have won it. City just needed that one moment.

  12. 'We just had to keep going'published at 14:08 BST 3 May

    FT: Man City 1-0 Liverpool

    Manchester City

Manchester City defender Rebecca Knaak, speaking to Sky Sports: "As you can tell, it's all the emotions. We deserved it so much today. We worked so hard.

"It wasn't an easy game at all but at this time of the year, to win this game, I'm very proud of the team.

"It was tough but we knew if we continued with our game plan and continued to play that we're good enough to score. It paid off in the end, very late. We just had to keep going."

  13. 'Nice win in the end'published at 14:07 BST 3 May

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham midfielder Signe Gaupset: "It's a hard game, a tough game. A lot of duels but a nice win in the end. I like playing in midfield and I think me and Drew [Spence] have a good connection in midfield.

On her goal: "We press high well as a team and I was able to get the goal. Really nice that we played the whole game through and got a win."

On winning their last home game of the season in front of the fans: "That's amazing and really good in front of this crowd so really proud to win the last home game of the season."
