In terms of Championship spending, we're currently at £39.5m spent in this window with Birmingham being the most active.

Their acquisitions of Carlos Vicente and August Priske for a combined £13m has been the standout spend of the window.

This level is slightly above what most Championship clubs spend in January with the exception of January 2025, when £86.1m was the record outlay in winter.

Including business conducted in the summer that would take transfer spend in the Championship for 2025-26 to £349m, easily the record for spending in a single season, surpassing, unsurprisingly, 2024-25 which was £317m.

And that's, of course, before any additional business to be completed today.

Championship club Stoke City are closing in on a move worth up to £3m to sign Chelsea winger Ato Ampah.

The 19-year-old has four goals and six assists in 13 matches at various youth levels for the Blues this season.

The England Under-20 international has made one appearance for Chelsea's men's team and this will be his first full-time chance in senior football.

That's where we're up to then - and the biggest deal that is likely to get done today is one for the summer.

But hold on a moment, we might have a live one (but don't get your hopes up too much)...

  6. Malacia to stay at Man Utd after Dorgu injurypublished at 15:52 GMT 2 February

Manchester United defender Tyrell Malacia will remain at the club for the rest of the season following Patrick Dorgu’s injury.

Malacia has made one brief substitute appearance for United this season after initially being part of Ruben Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’ in the summer.

There has been interest in the 26-year-old and it was anticipated he would leave this month if a suitable deal could be completed.

Club sources say there was no agreement on a transfer and now the view on Malacia has charged after Dorgu suffered a hamstring injury in the 3-2 win at Arsenal last week.

With Dorgu potentially out until April, Luke Shaw is United’s only orthodox left-back, although Lisandro Martinez, Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot have all filled in at times.

Nevertheless, United feel Malacia, who has been part of the matchday squad for the last 13 Premier League games but is set to leave when his contract expires in the summer, can offer a useful option and with Dorgu missing, have decided to keep him as part of Michael Carrick’s squad.

  8. Can a football player fail a medical?published at 15:40 GMT 2 February

    Ask Me Anything

A player does not actually 'pass' or 'fail' a medical exam, they just complete one before joining a new club.

It is then up to the buying club to decide whether signing the player in question is worth any risk should there be any abnormalities found in the results.

Think of it a bit like buying a house. Buyers will get a survey done, and weigh up whether they will complete the purchase depending on the findings.

Like a house survey, if a manager or team is determined to sign a player, they can do so despite any issues in the medical test.

  9. 'Mateta needs to move on even if Milan move falls through'published at 15:34 GMT 2 February

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace fan Matt Watts, speaking on BBC iPlayer's Transfer Deadline Day Live: "I think with Jean-Philippe Mateta it's tricky because he hasn't been in the best form of late, but he hasn't been fully fit.

"If the move to AC Milan doesn't happen, I wouldn't be surprised if he goes on loan between now and the end of the window, maybe to somewhere like Juventus.

"I do think we need to bring in another striker. I think bringing in Jorgen Strand Larsen would be a good move. He hasn't had a good first half of the season at Wolves but last season he scored goals and he was wanted by Newcastle in the summer.

"I wouldn't be against bringing him in, but if he does come in, then we need to find the solution elsewhere for Mateta."

A relief to us all, Martin. But let's not be fooled into thinking everything will be done and dusted by 19:00 GMT.

The good old deal sheets could come into play for the two or three transfers that might actual happen.

Plus, there's still three and a half hours to go and, unlikely as it seems, we may yet get some more activity. We can hope anyway.

  16. What is Mateta's injury?published at 14:59 GMT 2 February

    Jean-Philippe MatetaImage source, Getty Images

Jean-Philippe Mateta has been playing this season through a knee injury and that looks to be the issue that has put his move in serious doubt.

The problem itself hasn't stopped Mateta from playing this season.

The 28-year-old has played every game of Crystal Palace's 2025-26 Premier League season so far aside from last weekend's 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest, though manager Oliver Glasner claimed he was left out of that due to not being in the right head space.

Mateta's injury also hasn't stopped him from finding the back of the net this season. The Frenchman has scored eight Premier League goals for Palace, with his most recent strike coming against Fulham on New Year's Day.

  18. Mateta move in major jeopardy - now what?published at 14:52 GMT 2 February

    Jean-Philippe MatetaImage source, Getty Images

Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta's proposed move to AC Milan is in serious doubt due to issues with the 28-year-old's medical.

And this is a move that could start a domino effect across the league.

Palace had a £48m bid for Wolves forward Jorgen Strand Larsen accepted, but this move could now stall if Mateta remains with the London club.

And this also has a knock-on effect for Wolves, who were chasing deals for Southampton forward Adam Armstrong and Torino striker Che Adams.

From four done deals, we could be down to none.
