If Sunday hadn't happened, then there would be no discussion about this game and the Tottenham set up.

Originally we thought that they would play a back five when the teams came out, but they didn't. They played a midfield that had legs, and in Gray, Bergvall and Sarr they had three willing runners that would get back and plug the gaps while also getting up and supporting Kolo Muani and Richarlison in offering an attacking threat.

For 62 minutes they were in this game. They conceded two extremely good goals from Vitinha, which any team could have conceded. And then inexplicable defending.

After being in a really good position after the first hour, Spurs were masters of their own downfall.

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham boss Thomas Frank, speaking to TNT Sports: "I am very pleased with the performance. Today was much more the identity of the team, the bravery and aggressiveness of the team.

"There were lots of positives, the two strikers scoring three goals between them, the whole team performed really well. The performance was to get something out of the game but then you need to have the margins with you but we can't concede some of the goals we did.

"Vitinha is the best midfielder in the world. He will be the next Ballon d'Or winner."

On Randal Kolo Muani's performance: "It can definitely be a turning point but the two goals will give him confidence going forward. He has struggled a bit with confidence but now he is looking better and better."

On conceding five goals: "Of course it will always be concerning when we concede four and five but these were two completely different games. This was more of what I want. Today we competed. Today was a team with soul and character and you need that."

Arsenal

More from Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, speaking to TNT Sports: "It's been so easy to play with Martín Zubimendi. From the first moment we had with each other in pre-season, I just knew we'd play some good football. I really like him, he's such a nice guy.

"He is Spain's No 6 and you know what Spain No 6's are like. He has been so, so good for us.

"Every game requires something different. Every player knows their role."

Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, speaking to TNT Sports: "Look at Bayern Munich this season, they have been the best team in Europe. This was probably the toughest game tactically we have played this season. The way they work it is so, so good.

"We went man to man with them in the second half and I thought tonight we were outstanding. The manager is so happy. It was a special European night.

"Yes, definitely [it feels different to last season]. There are so many leaders in the team. We are just taking it one game at a time. There is a hunger and desire to win every game. There is a long way to go - let's not get carried away."

Tottenham's Archie Gray, speaking to TNT Sports: "We played against a top opponent tonight, they are probably the best team in Europe at the moment. There were some good moments we can take into Fulham.

"We scored some goals, there are things we can work on but they are a top, top team and there are moments you will suffer against them.

"They are the best team in Europe and they are relentless in every aspect of their game and they have that individual class. They are a top team and there are things we can learn from."

The confidence is there for Arsenal. You can feel it simmering all the time.

They might have patches in a game where they might not play that well or they have games where they might not perform so well, but the foundation is built, so it doesn't drop below a certain level.

Before with Arsenal you'd have these brilliant flashes but then they would have matches where they tailed right off. We're not seeing that now.

It's a 7/10 all the time. Sometimes it might even go to a 9/10, but they are just churning out these games.

Kerkez is out of position for the majority of the game. It's criminal that he's on the wrong side of the attacker. He has to get across.

Arsenal

Arsenal's Noni Madueke, speaking to TNT Sports: "I couldn't have picked a better game to score my first Arsenal goal. I am so happy the team got the win as well.

"It's an incredible statement, but we know the work we put in. We go into these games with every confidence that we are going to win.

"I am a confident player. I don't like someone telling me I cannot do something. But my team mates and the staff have belief in me."

Liverpool have now lost to an aggregate score of 7-1 to Nottingham Forest and PSV in their last two home games.
