Steve Torchia describes himself as one of Team Canada’s conflicted fans.
His parents are Italian, and he has long cheered for the Azzurri. But he says he has a hunch that the Canadian squad could make it further than Italy in this upcoming tournament.
“This is the best Canadian team that has ever been to the World Cup,” he tells me, adding that he believes they would have qualified regardless of being a host country.
He credits the team’s strength to their coach Jesse Marsch, an American who previously played 14 seasons with several Major League Soccer teams. Under his leadership, Canada finished fourth place last year in their very first appearance in the Copa America tournament - the only North and Central American team to make it that far.
There’s also Alphonso Davies, who is Canada’s star player but had been sidelined since March after tearing his ACL in a match against the US. Davies appears to be recovering, as he started training again with his club Bayern Munich two weeks ago.
“If Alphonso Davies comes back, I think we’ll be that much better,” Torchia notes.
No matter how Team Canada does, he and fellow fan Tony Cunha say the nation will be united behind their squad once the tournament starts.
“We’re going to become that much better because of it as a team,” says Torchia. “And as a country,” Cunha adds.

Wales fans can breathe a sigh of relief. If they qualify, they cannot be drawn in the same group as England.
They were drawn together at the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2016 so, if Craig Bellamy's side can make it to North America next summer, they'll be glad to avoid their neighbours.
Scotland are nailed on to get Group C, a repeat of the 1998 World Cup with Brazil and Morocco!
