  1. Sutton's prediction - Man City to exploit the spacepublished at 19:18 BST 19 May

Bournemouth v Manchester City (19:30 BST)

    Sutton's predictions

Manchester City's players will be feeling pretty good about themselves anyway after winning the FA Cup on Saturday, but now they must be thinking 'let's give one last push for Pep', with manager Pep Guardiola looking set to step down at the end of the season.

Arsenal are in still in control of the title race after beating Burnley on Monday but City will be desperate to take it to the final day, and I think they will.

Bournemouth are a very good team and they have plenty to play for too - this is Andoni Iraola's final home game in charge and the Cherries know sixth place will get them in Europe and could even get them in the Champions League.

It would not surprise me if they got something from this game but, with what is at stake for City, I am backing them to find a way to win.

Bournemouth are an attack-minded team, can be quite direct when they want to be and they will get after City and have a go at them - but I think City will exploit the space they leave behind.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-2

It is unsettling for Hull, it could be possibly the most unsettling.

Middlesbrough will be buzzing that they have got a place to play in the most lucrative game of football.

If you're going to set the standard for behaviour, if it is there and they have got legislation, and they want to apply it, that is what it's there for.

It just reads that they [Southampton] are bang to rights with this.

I think it's the right decision with regard to Southampton, but you have to feel sorry for the Southampton fans. Hope they're reimbursed for their tickets for both play-off games and their travel to Middlesbrough.

What a mess. A mess for the Football League and for the Premier League - but most importantly, for three sets of fans who have no idea what comes next.

  4. 'A strong response from the commission'published at 19:15 BST 19 May

That Ipswich match was last month and that is what jumps out from this. It is a strong response from the commission. It is stunning really to have a development like this. That is information we didn't know, the fact that even there had been rumours that this was not an isolated incident. That confirms that Southampton had done this previously.

In terms of Saturday, at least for the clubs Middlesborough and Hull City, they can now begin to get down to preparations. I feel for the innocent parties as it is a right mess, isn't it?

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, speaking to Sky Sports: "We have to win today, and after it would depend exclusively on our performance and result. This is a tough, tough game - after we will see what happens.

On the two changes: "We will reflect a little bit as it is a long trip to London, then come back here. So two games tonight and Sunday, so that is why I am pretty sure the players can do absolutely everything as there is no more to speculate."

On facing the Cherries: "Huge. How many games unbeaten? That speaks for itself. Incredible second part of the season and last season as well. Huge credit."

On whether the stories saying Guardiola is leaving at the end of the season and whether that has affected City's preparations: "Zero. Absolutely zero."

  7. 'Going to be an emotional one'published at 19:10 BST 19 May

Bournemouth v Manchester City (19:30 BST)

    Manchester City

Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo, who moved from Bournemouth to City in January, speaking to Sky Sports: "It is going to be an emotional one for sure. We have a job to do today, and we want to win."

On the title race: "We will have to wait and see - last game [of the season] we will see what happens.

"It is going to be tough. I have been part of this team. Hopefully, we can win, but we know how hard it is going to be."

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola speaking to Sky Sports: "It's going to be emotional but probably after the game. The game is so difficult, you get ready and prepare so many things that you are focused on the game, on the difficulty of the game, to give our best version.

"For us it's massive, obviously. We want to play in Europe next season, we know we are close but we are still not there. We need a result today. Probably the biggest of the challenges, City arriving in the last week fighting for the title. But if we do it, it's massive. So we'll give our best and let's see if it's enough."

On Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who were team-mates when they were younger: "I suppose he will be supporting us today. He also knows a lot of people in the other side. I want to win because it's massive for us and we have a massive opportunity. I understand the interest in the game but I want to do it for Bournemouth.

"We haven't been in touch this week. We will talk after the season ends, definitely."

On how talk that Pep Guardiola will leave Manchester City at the end of the season impacts this game: "No, it's a thing for Pep to say what he has to say. I don't think it will affect anything on their side or on our side in terms of the game itself because the game is so important that everything around the noise is something secondary now."

On wearing his lucky tape on his fingers: "We have to be very good, give yourself a chance and also you have to be lucky in certain moments because they are so so good."

Hull City, having prepared for Southampton, now find that they are going to be playing Middlesbrough instead.

It remains interestingly scheduled for Saturday because there have been some suggestions that it may be pushed back to give Hull City more time, but also to accommodate any potential appeal.

People saying "what advantage did they gain?" to understate the issue, I have a question; If there was no advantage, why did they do it? Absolutely the correct decision and Southampton should be embarrassed.

Finally there is justice in EFL. Good luck Hull and Boro.

    Jay, Hull

Fair play to the EFL for making the right decision and kicking Southampton out the playoffs. A fine just wouldn't have been a deterrent to other clubs. Good luck Hull and Middlesbrough.

  13. 'Remarkable turn of events'published at 18:58 BST 19 May

    Dan Roan
BBC sports editor on BBC Radio 5 Live

This is a remarkable turn of events. A captivating story since it emerged a couple of weeks ago that there had been this allegation of spying by an analyst on the backroom staff of Southampton ahead of the play-off semi-final between them and Middlesborough.

It has been known for some time that a potential consequence of this if Southampton were found guilty of breaking EFL rules was that they could be thrown out of the play-offs ahead of what is meant to be the final on Saturday against Hull City.

  14. Full statement on Southampton being expelled from play-offspublished at 18:55 BST 19 May

The full statement from the EFL reads: "An independent disciplinary commission has today expelled Southampton from the Sky Bet Championship play-offs after the club admitted to multiple breaches of EFL Regulations related to the unauthorised filming of other clubs’ training.

"In addition, the club has received a four-point deduction that will be applied to the 2026-27 Championship table, alongside a reprimand in respect of all the charges.

"The effect of today’s order is that Middlesbrough are reinstated into the 2026 Play-Offs and will proceed to the play-off final against Hull City. The final remains scheduled for Saturday 23 May, with the kick-off time to be confirmed.

"Southampton was first charged on Friday, 8 May, with further charges issued on Sunday, 17 May in relation to additional breaches during the 2025-26 season. Those additional charges arose from matters identified after the initial proceedings involving Middlesbrough were initiated.

"Southampton admitted breaches of regulations requiring clubs to act with the utmost good faith and prohibiting the observation of another club’s training session within 72 hours of a scheduled match. The admitted breaches concern fixtures against Oxford United in December 2025, Ipswich Town in April 2026 and Middlesbrough in May 2026.

"Southampton has a right to appeal the commission’s decision in accordance with EFL Regulations and the parties are working to try and resolve any appeal on Wednesday, 20 May. Subject to the outcome, it could result in a further change to Saturday’s fixture.

"The EFL is now in discussion with all three clubs regarding the implications of today’s decision and will make a further announcement in due course. The commission’s full written reasons will also be published in due course."

Middlesbrough FC have released a statement on Southampton being expelled from the play-offs.

"Middlesbrough Football Club welcomes the outcome of today’s disciplinary commission hearing.

"We believe this sends out a clear message for the future of our game regarding sporting integrity and conduct.

"As a club, we are now focused on our game against Hull City at Wembley on Saturday.

"Ticket information for our supporters will be available shortly."

    Breaking

Huge breaking news coming from the Championship.

Southampton, who were due to face Hull City in Saturday's play-off final, have been kicked out of the play-offs after they had spied on a Middlesbrough training session, before their semi-final.

It means Boro will now play Hull at Wembley on Saturday with the winners securing a Premier League spot next season.

The Saints have also been given a four-point deduction for the 2026-27 Championship campaign.

  17. De Zerbi turnaroundpublished at 18:40 BST 19 May

    Chelsea v Tottenham (20:15 BST)

Roberto de Zerbi has been in the Spurs hot seat for five games now and he's almost dragged them to safety.

A win tonight guarantees Premier League safety and a point means West Ham can only move level with Spurs on the final day, but Spurs are 13 goals better off with their goal difference.

  18. Spurs to send West Ham down?published at 18:38 BST 19 May

    Chelsea v Tottenham (20:15 BST)

So, a win for Spurs tonight will send West Ham down to the Championship, meaning there will be no relegation battle on the final day of the season.

If Spurs manage to get a point against Chelsea, then West Ham will be all but down because of a huge goal difference margin.

Chelsea’s sporting leadership and directors have released a statement in the matchday programme.

They say “the season overall has not met the standards, expectations or ambitions that define Chelsea Football Club”.

They add that they want to create “sustainable success” and that “no club wants to experience change in the head coach position”.

They said: “Expectations at Chelsea are always to be competing at the top of the Premier League and qualifying for the Champions League at this stage of the season. That has not changed. Everyone at the club is doing everything they can to correct that next year.”

There are also warm words for new manager Xabi Alonso, praise for the academy season and a significant mention of the women’s team.

Pep Guardiola may be leaving Manchester City but we've also had a major managerial incoming in the Premier League.

Chelsea announced the arrival of new manager Xabi Alonso on Saturday after seeing Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior depart the club earlier this season.

Alonso has signed a four-year deal and will be officially unveiled after his first few days of pre-season.
