The referee brandishes a yellow to the Scunthorpe midfielder but has more work to do to calm the situation on the pitch with the two sides getting heated.

Cav Miley's introduction forces him to chase down Patrick Jones and the Southend substitute is all over the place as he tries to catch up.

He can't make it and he knows it so he makes the foul and takes the caution rather than risk trouble further up the pitch.

Keenan Appiah-Forson has been quieter this half for Southend and is swapped out for Leon Chambers-Parillon.

Cav Miley takes the place of James Morton.

Another Scunthorpe free-kick is sent to the back post but the nod on from Branden Horton ripples the wrong side of the side netting.

It's still loud inside the stadium but I imagine there's some nerves starting to settle in for both sets of fans.

Scunthorpe still feel the more dangerous side in this but that little spell from Southend shows that they could still be vulnerable.

A second goal would go down well right about now.

Finally, a chance for Southend as Oli Coker is darting towards a delivery into the box.

If he gets on to it, it's likely to go into the net but Will Evans clears it out before he can make the attempt.

Scunthorpe earn a free-kick to prompt some angry words from Southend players.

No wonder they are getting irritated. Callum Roberts' delivery is heading straight into Danny Whitehall.

Southend's James Golding is practically pulling the shirt off of Whitehall to try and unbalance the striker but the referee doesn't spot it and the header goes north.

It's getting heated out there as Gus Scott-Morris pulls down Oliver Ewing inside the box.

The crowd think the penalty call is coming but the referee waves it away to their frustration.

Oohs from the crowd as Andy Dallas' strike is like a bullet towards the net.

It's straight into Scunthorpe stopper Louis Jones' arms though.

We've only had a couple of minutes of the second half - but this is better. Already they're trying to get to the ball first. You're taught that as a schoolboy. We didn't see too much of that in the first half.

Southend's Andy Dallas has done himself a mischief chasing down a loose ball in the attacking third.

He crashes to the floor, hurting, and is not able to keep the ball in play.

He's back up and OK though. Whether his side will be come the end of this match remains to be seen.

Have we taken a breath? Good.

It's time to hold it again as we are back underway at the Attis to see if Southend can save their play-off campaign.

They've frustrated the life out of Blues. They've stifled them. They haven't let Blues get their game going.

When they have had the opportunity, it's come back much too quickly. They've lost the physical battle, yet they still had that golden chance to get back in it.

We've seen little hints from Blues, but we need more.

A fantastic half of football for Scunthorpe. A real contrast to performances in recent weeks. On the front foot, they're pressing out of possession. In possession, they look a real threat. Everyone is really on it.

They do need a second goal, though. You think Southend may change a few things and come out for the second half stronger.

A touch of Callum Roberts magic puts Scunthorpe ahead at the break.

Scunthorpe's top scorer struck a superb shot in the fifth minute to take the lead. A finish that will no doubt have a scrappy Southend side worried.

Their best chance came from a Keenan Appiah-Forson volley that required saving, but otherwise they haven't really had much to say in this match.

And given that they haven't scored against Scunthorpe all season AND Roberts scored the winner in their last meeting at the Attis... the outcome is looking grim for Southend if they can't come out with something new after the break.
