    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 64-2

It's not Curran, Jordan Clark comes into the attack and Nick Gubbins tries to hook his first ball into the leg side from well outside off but getting a huge top edge which, thankfully for him, drops safely.

Four byes follow from Clark's second delivery, again due to some real late swing after the ball comes off the deck, with Ollie Pope unable to cling on diving to his right.

Gubbins plays and misses at the next and then sees his outside edge beaten by Clark from the fuller next ball before Gubbins defends the final delivery into the leg side.

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 58-2

Matt Fisher is asking some questions here, getting the ball to come back at these left-handers, but not quite enough.

Nick Gubbins moves to 23* with a single and will be on strike as Tom Curran returns from the other end.

  3. Postpublished at 14:24 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 57-2

Nick Gubbins picks up a single off Tom Curran to bring Jake Lehmann onto strike.

The Australian lefty gets off the mark with a glorious cover drive, perfectly-timed, which sends dozens of children scampering down the stands in the hope the ball will pop over the hoarding.

Sadly for them it does not.

Matt Fisher tempts Ali Orr into a little waft at one rising up outside off stump, leading to another intake of breath.

Orr picks up a couple from the next ball before Fisher fields off his own bowling to prevent a run.

But Fisher has his man now...

Orr tries to drive straight at one which swings in and catches the inside edge and loops to Tom Curran at mid-wicket.

Surrey on top as Jake Lehmann heads to the crease.

  5. Postpublished at 14:13 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 50-1

Another four byes as Tom Curran slings one down the leg side and though Ollie Pope gets a glove to it, he can't prevent the ball racing to the fence.

A single gets Ali Orr off the mark at the 10th attempt and brings up the Hampshire 50 before Nick Gubbins is struck outside the line, to muted appeals, to end the over.

  6. Postpublished at 14:09 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 44-1

Matt Fisher has his head in his hands and Ollie Pope has a rueful grin.

Fisher has got this ball to Ali Orr to come back an absolute mile, it beats off stump and then swings wildly back towards the leg side and Pope is unable to gather despite diving full length to his right as it races away to fine leg for four byes.

I was at the schools day last year. The weather couldn't have been more different - 36 degrees but the kids couldn't have cared less! Dom Sibley posted 305 out of 820-9 for Surrey which probably signalled the end of the Kookaburra ball trial.

Matt Fisher signs autographsImage source, Shutterstock

Matt Fisher is getting the Hollywood treatment as he retreats to field at long leg, with school children in fluorescent tabards flooding down the stands in search of an autograph.

RSI from signing his name is a real concern here. One to watch.

Tom Curran sends down a no-ball from his third delivery to buy him some more time before Nick Gubbins produces a glorious drive down the ground for four to long-off.

Curran replied by beating the outside edge and Gubbins clips the final delivery through mid-wicket for another four, beating Sam Curran's slide to the rope, to take Gubbins onto 20*.

What a beauty from Matt Fisher...

    The crowd goes wild...

Poor Toby Albert had no chance, it's pitched on a full length on middle stump and straightened up to send off-stump cartwheeling as Albert pushed forward in defence.

A perfect delivery, according to BBC Radio Solent's Kevan James.

Ali Orr joins Nick Gubbins in the middle.

  10. Postpublished at 13:58 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 30-0

Nick Gubbins rolls his wrists to pick up the first boundary of the day off Matt Fisher, clipping off leg-stump to the deep square rope, across the soggy outfield.

A single takes him to 12*.

The track is every bit as green as it was yesterday, of course.

Testing conditions for batting, but the wet ball won't help the bowlers either.

  11. 'Credit to the ground staff'published at 13:55 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 25-0

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London commentator

Ground staff do work hard, across the country, amazing how much work they get through.

When I arrived this morning it wasn't actually raining but the covers were all on, they knew it was coming, and it means they were able to mop up quicker.

  12. Postpublished at 13:54 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 25-0

Whoever does Ollie Pope's laundry is going to be working overtime tonight, the ball is hooping about after hitting the deck and he's flinging himself around like Jordan Pickford in a goalmouth scramble trying to prevent extras.

Toby Albert picks up a couple with a push off the second ball of Tom Curran's first full over of the day to move to 16*.

  13. Postpublished at 13:50 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 23-0

Nick Gubbins clips Matt Fisher's second ball to fine leg for a couple and then does the same two balls later for another two.

The deficit is under 400, important psychological milestone, of course...

  14. Postpublished at 13:47 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 19-0

The umpires have already had a conflab as it's drizzling and a couple of umbrellas have popped up.

Matt Fisher will bowl the first full over of day two.

  15. Postpublished at 13:45 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 19-0

First runs of the day are byes as Tom Curran gets one to shape away, well away, from Toby Albert.

Ollie Pope, keeping wicket, can't corral it diving across first slip.

  16. Play begins at the Ovalpublished at 13:44 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 17-0

    We made it, people.

Tom Curran has four balls of his aborted over to bowl.

Nick Gubbins and Toby Albert in the middle. It's very murky and the lights are on.

Let's enjoy it while we can...

  17. Players are out...published at 13:43 BST 8 June

The children are greeting the umpires like a One Direction concert, according to Mark Church of BBC Radio London.

  19. Restart delayedpublished at 13:37 BST 8 June

    Surrey 421 v Hampshire 17-0

Ugh. Not good. It seems the 13:45 BST restart might be pushed back slightly, by how long remains to be seen.

There is another shower of rain lurking on the radar, but the track remains uncovered for now and the players are out there in whites on the boundary edge.

The children are going to see some cricket..........for about half an hour before they all need to head home for normal pick up time. Poor kids!

    Steven, London

You raise an unfortunate point, Steven. Hopefully some parents will be badgered into bringing them back later in the day.

For now they can enjoy watching the Surrey bowlers going through their paces and the final covers being removed from the outfield.
