    Trail by 96

Jofra Archer rubs salt in Ben Sears' wound, edging the next delivery past slip while attempting a big drive - that's four.

New ball time at the end of the over - New Zealand take it immediately and Nathan Smith is coming on to use it.

  2. Not outpublished at 79.2 overs

    Eng 338-7

    Yeah, that was very hopeful.

Ball tracking has the delivery sliding quite a way down leg.

New Zealand lose their final review, England have three remaining.

  3. New Zealand reviewpublished at 79.2 overs

The wicketless Ben Sears is going to seek a dismissal on review.

He strikes Gus Atkinson on the pad, it looks to be sliding down leg, but the tourists are going to use their final review.

    Sam, Croatia

What about Jeff Wilson, played Test cricket and rugby for New Zealand.

    Nick in Leeds

  5. Eng 338-7published at 79 overs

Mitchell Santner is having a better time of it in the afternoon session - this over goes for two singles as well.

That means England now trail by exactly 100 - the first innings deficit they conceded at The Oval.

  6. Eng 336-7published at 78 overs

Jofra Archer denies Ben Sears a maiden, taking a single off the seamer's final over to retain the strike.

Excluding the subbed Blair Tickner, Sears is the only New Zealand seamer without a wicket - he has figures of 0-69 from 16 overs.

  7. Eng 335-7published at 77 overs

Ah, here's Mitchell Santner, who's coming on for Zak Foulkes.

The spinner has been expensive thus far, going for 0-55 from eight overs.

He concedes a couple of singles from this effort.

    Nigel MartynImage source, England Seniors

Nigel Martyn, a football goalkeeper, from Cornwall, is fondly remembered at all of his four main clubs, Bristol Rovers, Crystal Palace, Leeds and Everton. But he was quite a good cricketer, and has since played in the Yorkshire League, and just been selected in 2026 for the England Over 60s team.

    Jim, Croydon

Funny enough, Jim, we interviewed Nigel Martyn last month after his call-up into the England's over-60s cricket setup. You can read more about here...

That was crunch from Archer then.

  10. Eng 333-7published at 76 overs

    Parried... and to the ropes.

Jofra Archer cuts Ben Sears a little aerially towards the backward point boundary.

Rachin Ravindra runs round to try and gather, but can't quite gather cleanly as Archer picks up his first four.

  11. Eng 327-7published at 75 overs

Hey, first boundary of the session.

Gus Atkinson either gets a touch of bat or some pad on a full Zak Foulkes delivery and the ball hurries away fine.

The runs end up in Atkinson's column.

Cricketers who played pro football were legion in days gone by - CB Fry, Andrew Ducat, Denis and Leslie Compton for example (there are many more) - but fewer in more recent times although one IT Botham played football for Scunthorpe methinks…

  13. Eng 323-7published at 74 overs

Gus Atkinson digs out the full ball from Ben Sears, sending a single down to fine leg.

Jofra Archer faces four more dot balls - England have scored nine runs in the six overs since lunch.

  15. Eng 322-7published at 73 overs

Jofra Archer faces three dot balls to see out Zak Foulkes' over - the seamer has figures of 2-30 now.

Meanwhile Andy Zaltzman informs us that, in innings where Harry Brook has made a half-century, he's been dismissed in the fifties on four of the last five occasions and seven of the last 11.

That is exactly why Foulkes is still bowling. It was a lovely delivery.

Brook batted so sensibly out in the field today, on another day he would have been thinking should I have just hit that for six.

  17. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 72.3 overs

    Brook b Foulkes 58 (Eng 322-7)

    Fantastic bit of bowling.

Concussion sub Zak Foulkes has his second wicket, a little movement off the seam and taking the top of Harry Brook's off stump.

Brook offered a sensible defence, but was beaten all ends up.

England's last senior batter departs, and they still trail by 116.

  18. Eng 320-6published at 72 overs

Harry Brook comes down the pitch to take a single off Ben Sears, before Gus Atkinson faces five dot balls from the New Zealand seamer.

  19. Eng 318-6published at 71 overs

    Very nice.

Zak Foulkes' delivery lifts and beats the edge of Gus Atkinson's bat.

The 24-year-old has bowled very well since coming in as a concussion sub for Blair Tickner yesterday.

  20. Eng 316-6published at 70 overs

Same again in the following over, Harry Brook works a delivery off his pads for a single off Ben Sears' bowling - the only scoring shot from the six deliveries.
