    Asalanka c Bethell b Dawson 2 (SL 79-3)

    Lumped into the leg side!

Charith Asalanka goes to send Liam Dawson flying over the ropes but doesn't get enough on his shot, with Jacob Bethell taking the catch in the deep.

A couple of quick wickets for England, and stalling momentum is so important in a shortened innings.

Adil Rashid has picked up at least one wicket in his last 22 T20Is, last going wicketless in a 10-over game against Namibia in Antigua during the 2024 T20 World Cup.

  3. SL 79-2published at 8 overs

Adil Rashid beats the bat of Charith Asalanka with his first delivery, then the Sri Lanka batters work three singles off the rest of the over.

Rashid has gone for nine runs off his first two overs.

    Nissanka c Buttler b Rashid 23 (SL 76-2)

    Adil Rashid gets the wicket!

He starts his over with an off side wide but strikes with his next delivery.

Pathum Nissanka tries to sweep England's leggie and top-edges.

The ball spoons up for a simple catch for Jos Buttler, and a dangerous partnership of 52 comes to an end.

Well bad luck with the ball that scraped the side of the stump but generally not great from England's attack, but things can change in this format. As is often the case, variation is key. In this series and the World Cup, Rashid is so vital and important.

  6. 6 runs

    SL 75-1published at 7 overs

    And now sixes!

Sam Curran goes for the short ball and Kusal Mendis pulls hard, a bit squarer, and easily clears the boundary.

Mendis can't score off the next ball, but has no issue with the final delivery of the over - he sends the slower ball down the ground for six more.

20 runs off the over - and Curran has now gone for 35 from his 12 deliveries - and the 50 partnership comes up off 27 balls.

  7. SL 63-1published at 6.3 overs

Back comes Sam Curran and Kusal Mendis comfortably sweeps his opening delivery for four.

Two balls later he wallops the ball through mid-wicket, with the ball bouncing just before going over the rope, with the chasing fielder not getting especially close.

  8. SL 55-1published at 6 overs

Adil Rashid arrives to tighten it up.

His first over goes for five singles, and the fielders go back with the powerplay ending after the first ball of the over.

  9. 6 runs

    SL 50-1published at 5 overs

    50 up with a six!

Pathum Nissanka heaves Liam Dawson's fifth delivery over mid-off.

That takes him to 21 off 15 balls, before he fails to score off the last ball of the over.

  10. SL 44-1published at 4.3 overs

    Off the stump!

Pathum Nissanka misses a big slog reverse sweep off Liam Dawson, and the ball just brushes the leg stump and flies away for four byes.

Dawson is confused and offers half an appeal for lbw, having heard something but not realising it was a ricochet off the wicket.

Nissanka then cuts the next delivery away through backward point for four.

Re 15:22, England have dropped five of the nine catching opportunities created by Jofra Archer since the start of the Ashes - a catch success rate of just 55%. By comparison, the rest of England's bowlers have a combined 78% catch success.

  13. SL 36-1published at 4 overs

Jofra Archer is very keen to extract an lbw review from his captain, but Harry Brook isn't convinced that Pathum Nissanka is out and we continue.

Nissanka then crashes the next delivery over the covers for four, before Kusal Mendis adds his first boundary with a shot through backward point.

  14. SL 25-1published at 3 overs

Kusal Mendis comes to the crease and fails to scoop a first delivery that goes down the leg side and gets called for a wide.

He then fails to score off the rest of the over.

  15. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 2.3 overs

    Mishara c Dawson b Overton 16 (SL 24-1)

Liam Dawson isn't dropping that one!

It's six and out for Kamil Mishara - he dispatches Jamie Overton's first ball over mid-wicket for the game's first boundary clearance, but two deliveries later he's walking off the ground.

He goes for a similar shot and skies it, with Dawson settling under the ball with plenty of time to take a simple catch.

  16. dropped catch

Mishara dropped on ninepublished at 2 overs

    SL 18-0

A tight over from Jofra Archer, but he should have a wicket!

Kamil Mishara slaps the over's penultimate ball towards short mid-wicket, Liam Dawson puts in a big leap and the ball bounces off his wrist and hits the deck.

Had he gone for that with both hands I think he might have had a better chance.

Meanwhile Mishara takes a single to move to 10.

  17. Postpublished at 15:19 GMT 30 January

Here's Jofra Archer to take the second over.

By the way, the powerplay is going to last 5.1 overs because we're only playing 17 overs.

A left-arm bowler has bowled the first over in all eight T20Is in which England have bowled under Harry Brook's captaincy (6x Luke Wood, 1x Liam Dawson 1x Sam Curran).

  19. SL 16-0published at 1 over

    More boundaries!

The right-handed Pathum Nissanka slams the ball through extra cover before the left-handed Kamil Mishara cracks the final delivery of the over through the covers.

An excellent start for Sri Lanka.

  20. SL 5-0published at 0.2 overs

Left-armer seamer Sam Curran gets England going.

Pathum Nissanka tries to play the opening ball into the leg side but sees the ball squirt off his body into the off side and he hurries through a leg bye.

Kamil Mishara then whips the following delivery through mid-off for four.
