More from Heather Knight about whether she considered playing in next year's women's Ashes: "I thought about it. Obviously the nature of international cricket at the moment, there is always the next World Cup or Ashes, whatever it is, there’s always something round the corner to keep going for I guess so it did cross my mind to have one more go at the Aussies.

"I love Ashes cricket, I love playing in it, so it was certainly something that I thought about but to be honest, I feel like after this summer, I probably haven’t got the energy to keep doing what I need to do to be an international cricketer.

"I’ve always said that if I’m at a point where I feel like I can’t give everything to the team then that is the time for me to step away. I always want to be that person that is giving my full self to what I’m doing so after this summer, that probably isn’t going to be there.

"It wouldn’t be fair to me or anyone else to hang on so it just feels right. It feels really special. I am so happy and content. It feels like the time for me to step away and move into a whole new world of retirement."

  2. Ind 177-2published at 48 overs

Short, wide, and cut past a diving fine leg for four by Yastika Bhatia. Sophie Ecclestone looks visibly annoyed, Bhatia didn't even bother to set off for the single.

Her next five deliveries are better, bringing just two runs.

  3. Ind 171-2published at 47 overs

Yastika Bhatia finishes the over with a single. Five from it.

Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt is doing some pointing in the field as Sophie Ecclestone prepares to bowl.

Bhatia is one of the loveliest, kindest humans and just so talented.

  5. 50 runs

50 for Yastika Bhatiapublished at 46.4 overs

    Ind 170-2

Yastika Bhatia drives Lauren Bell down the ground for four and salutes her bat all around Lord's.

That's her second half-century in four Test matches, coming off 86 balls.

Former England captain Heather Knight announced late on Saturday that she will retire at the conclusion of this game.

She's been speaking to BBC Sport's Isa Guha this morning about the decision and her career. We'll bring you the best of the quotes throughout the first session.

"I probably knew for definite two or three months ago. At the start of the season I was pretty sure I wanted to finish - a home World Cup and a Test match at Lord’s is a pretty unique summer," said Knight.

"It has been an amazing summer - I’ve absolutely loved it, it’s been amazing to be involved in.

"We’ve probably discussed it a lot as friends for the past year or so, it’s been at the back of my mind and a lot of people who have retired have said ‘you’ll know when it is right’ and I thought they were full of rubbish and convincing themselves they’ve made the right decision but I knew it was the right time for me.

"I’m really excited for what’s next - I am really happy and content with my decision. I’m looking forward to a couple more days hopefully and finishing up at a place that is hugely special for me. Lord’s is an amazing place and I’ve got some brilliant memories here."

Despite missing out on a hundred and a place on the Lord's honours board, this has been a fine outing for Smriti Mandhana. This is the first time in her career that she has scored fifties in both innings of a Test match.

  8. Ind 165-2published at 46 overs

Four singles from Sophie Ecclestone's 14th over. India's lead is closing in on 300.

I can remember when if England were having a hard time Heather would bring herself on to bowl and 9 times out of 10 she would change the game. What a fantastic star she has been for England.

  10. Ind 161-2published at 45 overs

Nearly two in two balls for Lauren Bell, beating the outside edge of new batter Jemimah Rodrigues.

A positive over for England finishes with a muted lbw appeal.

Devastating. Mandhana will be devastated, she has got so close to the century on two occasions and on a flat pitch. It was a good umpire's call.

That is superb work from Amy Jones, taking a low diving catch at full stretch and turning her glove to keep the ball off the grass.

    Lauren Bell makes the breakthrough.

Smriti Mandhana, already most of the way to the pavilion, departs.

Knocks of 83 and 70 for the India opener but no spot on the honours board.

  13. Umpire reviewpublished at 44.4 overs

What a grab from Amy Jones! Diving to her right, she pouches it one-handed, the finger goes up, and Smriti Mandhana is on her way.

Or is she? Yastika Bhatia says "hang on a mo" to her batting partner. The umpire is having another look.

Lauren Bell will be disappointed not to have Yastika Bhatia's wicket to her name on the very first ball of the day. Lauren Bell has attacked the stumps 26% of the time in this Test match - the most by any seamer in the match.

  16. Ind 161-1published at 44 overs

Ooooooh another dicey moment for Yastika Bhatia. Lunging forward, Sophie Ecclestone's delivery whizzes past her outside edge and the India wicketkeeper throws her back foot back behind the line before Amy Jones whips off the bails.

    Two singles. Four dots.

  17. Ind 159-1published at 43 overs

A replay shows Lauren Bell's opening delivery grazed the stump on its way through to Amy Jones. Oooooh.

Yastika Bhatia responds to that close call in style, driving through mid-off for four to move into the 40s. She takes a single off the penultimate ball to keep the strike.

From what I have seen from the stands, I reckon Lauren Bell would say to everyone that she has not bowled her best. Her pace has been down.

  19. Ind 154-1published at 42.1 overs

We're up and running on day three, Lauren Bell beating Yastika Bhatia's inside edge. Amy Jones makes a tumbling stop behind the stumps. That was close.

  20. Postpublished at 11:01 BST 12 July

The players are out in the middle.

India will resume on 154-1, leading by 269 runs.

England need early wickets. Lauren Bell is first up with the ball to try and break the second-wicket partnership of Smriti Mandhana (69 off 124) and Yastika Bhatia (39 off 73).
