    Back-to-back!

    England close in.

Four and out for Nathan Smith, who guided his first ball to third man only to nick his second through to Jamie Smith.

Nice seam movement from Gus Atkinson, who has three wickets now.

It was a partnership that was starting to frustrate England.

Devon Conway was hanging in there and Glenn Phillips brought a bit of energy to New Zealand's batting which we were all crying out for yesterday. It's the only way on this pitch to try and create some momentum.

A good catch going forward, well taken by Jacob Bethell. Maybe Devon Conway was put off by the movement of the fielders but that's exactly what England wanted.

  4. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 34 overs

    Conway c Bethell b Stokes 41 (NZ 111-7)

Great catch! England break a crucial partnership.

Devon Conway's stubborn resistance is ended as he gets a leading edge to Jacob Bethell at gully, who does well to dive forward and get his fingers under the ball as it starts to dip on him.

It was a gutsy effort from Conway, who fought for every run and withstood some really testing bowling but England's captain wins the contest.

  5. Umpire reviewpublished at 34 overs

Has Ben Stokes got his man?

England and Jacob Bethell celebrate, but the umpires want to check whether the catch was taken cleanly.

At what point does the pressure shift if this partnership continues to extend?

Every now and then, there are some good signs for New Zealand.

A 50 partnership between Conway and Phillips. The last time New Zealand had a 50 partnership for the 7th wicket in England was back in 2015 at Headingley (53 - BJ Watling and M Craig).

  8. NZ 110-6published at 33.2 overs

    Target 254

Lovely timing from the determined Devon Conway as Ben Stokes drifts down the leg side invitingly.

Glenn Phillips' proactive approach seems to have given Conway a little more confidence. That brings up their 50 partnership in good time.

  9. NZ 105-6published at 33 overs

    Target 254

Devon Conway is happy to play out a maiden from Gus Atkinson as their scoring has stalled over the past few overs.

Can England make the most of the pressure?

We really need to get Phillips out. We don’t want to be undone by another charmed innings if conditions die down a bit (à la Perth).

After the chaotic and at times shambolic nature of the past few days, wouldn't it feel quite rewarding to get a close, exciting finish here?

An unbeaten 46 run partnership between Conway and Phillips - New Zealand's best partnership in this match so far and they are going at 5.8 runs per over.

There's plenty of time for England, they don't have to panic.

  14. NZ 104-6published at 31 overs

    Target 254

Phillips negotiates the rest of a tricky Gus Atkinson over.

Devon Conway clubbed one down the ground for three off the first ball, and I suspect he was grateful to be watching that from the safety of the non-striker's end.

  15. NZ 104-6published at 30.2 overs

"Oh my goodness," yelps Glenn Phillips, as Gus Atkinson gets one to lift from a good length and pin him on the glove.

He whips his hand off the bat handle immediately. He isn't hurt, but that'll certainly keep him on his toes.

    Foot work in this match...

    • England: Front foot (40%) - 38.8 ave
    • Back foot (36%) - 19.6 ave
    • New Zealand: Front foot (48%) - 8.3 ave
    • Back foot (30%) - 29.3 ave

New Zealand have found some success while playing off the back foot. However, they have not done so as often as they might have liked.

    Ooh, shot of the day.

Glenn Phillips brings up New Zealand's 100 with some glorious timing, which has been a rare sight in this Test match.

He whips the ball through mid-wicket for four off Ben Stokes.

That's just a little snapshot of the pitch that we've seen throughout the game.

    Massive movement.

  19. NZ 96-6published at 29 overs

The umpires have been kept very busy during this Test, too. That was a good decision from Rod Tucker.

Or not - it's comfortably missing leg stump.
