He comes in fourth in the 1,000m with a personal best time of two minutes 41.04 seconds, reaching 6670 points to beat Ashton Eaton's world record of 6645 from 2012.
Jeff Tesselaar of the Netherlands won the race in 2:32.49 with the top four finishers all setting personal bests.
American Heath Baldwin finished third in 2:39.06 to seal silver, while compatriot Kyle Garland took bronze with a sixth-place 2:43.43.
