Plan
deserves our analysis
From NEWS LETTER September 10th, 1999
What we are obliged to do, given that it is right and proper to investigate
the future of policing in a changed society, is to ask that the recommendations
be considered at length, and their merits and shortcomings weighed carefully
in the balance. It would be remarkable if all of the report's 175 recommendations
were supportable by either section of the community. Equally, it would be
astonishing if the report did not include elements worthy of support in
any fair-minded society.
The task of responsible politicians and community leaders must now be to
establish common support for any recommendations guaranteed to deliver an
improved, impartial and accountable police service, well-equipped to fight
crime, while benefiting from the support and backing of the people as a
whole. |
