Could US President Donald Trump's face be added to one of the United State's most famous monuments?

President Trump appears keen on the idea, which has sparked support and opposition, as well as raising questions about whether it's actually possible.

Mount Rushmore is a huge sculpture carved into a granite mountain in the Black Hills of South Dakota, in the United States.

It shows the faces of four previous American presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

Each face is about 60 feet, or 18 metres, tall - roughly the height of a six-storey building.

The National Park Service says the monument is meant to tell a story about the "birth, growth, development and preservation" of the United States.

The idea of Mount Rushmore began in the 1920s. Doane Robinson, a South Dakota historian, wanted a giant sculpture to bring visitors to the area.

Sculptor Gutzon Borglum later chose the four presidents because he believed they represented important parts of American history: Washington for the country's founding, Jefferson for expansion, Roosevelt for development, and Lincoln for keeping the country together during the Civil War.

Work began in 1927 and ended in 1941. Workers used drills, dynamite to carefully carve into the rock.

However the Black Hills, where the faces are carved, is a place that is sacred to the Lakota people.

Many Native Americans say the land was taken unfairly - because of this, some people see Mount Rushmore as a national symbol, while others see it as a reminder of injustice.

In recent years, President Donald Trump has been linked to the idea of adding a fifth face... his own.

South Dakota politician Kristi Noem has said Trump once told her it was his 'dream' to have his face on Mount Rushmore.

President Trump has also said it's a "good idea" and has shared an AI-made image showing himself added to the mountain.

In January 2025, Republican congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna introduced a bill that would direct officials to arrange for Trump's figure to be carved there.

So how would Donald Trump's face actually be added? There is no simple application form.

Congress - the American version of Parliament - would probably need to pass a law, and the National Park Service would be involved. But there is a major practical problem; park officials and experts have said there is no suitable space left on the existing sculpture.

If you could carve and create your own Mount Rushmore, who would you choose - which leaders, celebs, artists or footballers might you pick? Or would it be someone you know in your family or friends?
