England's World Cup dreams end in defeat by Argentina

England men's chance of reaching their first final of a World Cup for 60 years ended on Wednesday night after two late goals by Argentina.
A goal from Anthony Gordon had put England in the lead at 55 minutes.
But two late goals for Argentina from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez put them through to the final.
Prince William has praised the Three Lions saying their "fight and determination" was inspiring.
England now play France on Saturday for third place, before Spain faces Argentina on Sunday.

Anthony Gordon scored England's goal putting them in the lead
At half time it was 0-0, after 45 minutes of tense exchanges and fouls.
Then a cross from Morgan Rogers gave Anthony Gordon the opportunity to score, putting England in the lead at 55 minutes.
For a moment it seemed they were on their way to reach England's first men's World Cup final since 1966.

But then Argentina increased the pressure.
England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford managed to save a header from Nico Gonzalez, but the energy from Argentina was unstoppable.
Half an hour after Gordon's goal, Enzo Fernandez equalised.
Moments later, in stoppage time, Lautaro Martinez headed in a cross from Lionel Messi and Argentina were through to the final.
The team will now face Spain at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.

Manager Thomas Tuchel has been criticised for concentrating on the defence
England manager Thomas Tuchel praised England's performance.
"The team gave everything and we were very close," he said after the game.
But other have criticised Thomas Tuchel for sending on defenders Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and Nico O'Reilly after Anthony Gordan's goal.
England captain Wayne Rooney told BBC Sport.
"It started from the manager and the decisions he made. It was too passive.
"Against this team, the world champions, you will not get away with it. This has been the biggest test and we have failed it."
But many people have been praising a England team that got all the way to the semi-final and faced the current World Cup champions.

Prince William, patron of the Football Association said in a statement shared by Kensington Palace:
"The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament.
"Hold your heads high."
Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote on social media:
"Gutted. Tonight wasn't the result we all hoped for, but this England team has given it their all. The passion and energy they've shown representing the badge has made us all proud."
It's not the last we will see of England this World Cup, the team face France on Saturday in a bid for third place.
