  1. Trump criticises Reiner in Truth Social postpublished at 15:16 GMT 15 December 2025

We've just heard from President Donald Trump, who has posted on Trump Social about the "very sad" incident in California - while at the same time taking a swipe at Reiner, who was a vocal critic of his.

In the post, Trump said - without providing any evidence - that Reiner and his wife "reportedly" died "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction" with "Trump Derangement Syndrome".

"He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J Trump," he wrote.

It is not clear what reports the president is referring to, and while the investigation is being treated as a homicide, police have yet to comment on any possible motive. Trump’s comments go far beyond what is known about the deaths.

The president and his allies often used the term Trump Derangement Syndrome - which he shortens to TDS - in reference to those who are critical of him.

Reiner was a lifelong Democrat and a prominent liberal activist, and a frequent critic of Trump. In 2017, for example, he called Trump "mentally unfit" for office.

Monty Python star Eric Idle wrote on X that he had spoken to Reiner "for over an hour" the previous night. The two first met 50 years ago, Idle said, and Reiner was "a clever, talented and very thoughtful man".

Kathy Bates, who starred in Reiner's film Misery in 1990, told NBC News in a statement that Reiner had "changed the course of my life". The late director was "a man who made films of every genre to challenge himself as an artist", and his wife Michele was a "gifted photographer", Bates said.

Fellow actor John Cusack called Reiner "a great man", while Elijah Wood said he was "horrified" by the couple's deaths.

James Woods, who was nominated for an Oscar for starring in Reiner's 1996 drama Ghosts of Mississippi, said he was "devastated by this terrible event".

Comedy star and director Ben Stiller said it was "a huge loss". Stiller said Reiner had "made some of the most formative movies for my generation", explaining: "Spinal Tap is one of the best comedies ever made - and the list goes on."
