Watch: Donald Trump says he's 'not a fan' of Rob Reiner

US President Donald Trump has defended his controversial earlier post about Rob Reiner, describing the slain director as "a deranged person".

Specifically, he accused Reiner of being "behind" the Russia "hoax".

"I was not a fan of Rob Reiner at all, in any way, shape or form."

In his earlier post, Trump said - without providing any evidence - that Reiner and his wife "reportedly" died "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction" with "Trump Derangement Syndrome".

The comment was widely condemned, including by prominent Republicans.

  4. Johnson calls Reiner deaths 'unspeakable family tragedy'published at 20:45 GMT 15 December 2025

Speaking to reporters on Capital Hill Monday, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson called the murders of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele an "unspeakable family tragedy", and "another reminder of just the senseless violence and evil that is so rampant in our society".

“We see evil all around us and during the holiday season, as we enter the holy season, we've begun Hanukkah, we're coming up upon Christmas, we have to appeal to our better angels, and we have to, I think we've got to amplify those voices and those sentiments. So that's my that's my position on it,” Johnson added.

Johnson did not provide comment when asked about President Trump's Truth Social post about the murders.

In the post, Trump said - without providing any evidence - that Reiner and his wife "reportedly" died "due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction" with "Trump Derangement Syndrome".

'I'm learning about being a parent' - Rob Reiner talks to the BBC's Tim Sebastian in 1998

Nearly 30 years ago, Rob Reiner sat for an interview with the BBC in 1998 when his two sons were aged 6 and 4 and while he and his wife Michele Singet Reiner were expecting their third child.

In the interview, the filmmaker was reflecting on his approach to parenting, saying that is changing his child-rearing approach based on his lived experiences with his sons, because he's "learning about being a parent".

"Hopefully what I'm doing is I'm trying to improve the fabric of society by making an investment early on with children," Reiner said, "So that we will have a reduction in crime and teen pregnancy and drug abuse and child abuse."

“He was what is known in Hollywood is known as a mensch; just an all-around trustworthy, reliable, wonderful person, and he was.”

That was the first thing Harry Shearer said, when we spoke on the phone a short while ago. He wrote and starred in the comedy classic This is Spinal Tap with Rob Reiner.

He then gave me his reaction when he first heard the news of his friend’s death.

“I didn't believe it. I thought ‘that can’t be true’. Originally, we thought it might have been a break-in, then it got worse and worse, as this story became more personal and more shocking in its details.

They had known each other for decades.

“I have these this memory of sitting around his office and it was just non-stop laughs. Rob was the kind of funny person that didn't fear or resent being around other people who were funny.”

“He seemed like a really good dad, he was a good friend. He was very voluble in his political comments. You could sail along in Hollywood very easily without doing that and it was ballsy of him to put his career and his professional associations on the line for the stuff that he believed in.”

I asked him what he will remember Rob Reiner for.

“Steadfastness as a friend and partner and director. You could rely on him. It's horrible. The longer and the longer story goes on, the worse it gets.”

Rob Reiner was a lifelong baseball fan whose allegiance to the LA Dodgers started as a teen when his family moved from New York to LA, he told MLB.com in a 2014 interview.

He told MLB.com that baseball "is like life in that we’re alone, yet we’re still part of a team".

“In other sports, you rely, always, on your teammates to help you in whatever it is you do. In baseball, yes, you rely on your teammates, but there are moments when you are alone and no one can help you. That’s very much like life, too."

Reiner's love of the game was instilled in him by his father, director and actor Carl Reiner - and Rob Reiner, in turn, passed on that love to his son Jake, he told People in 2023. The father and son had been to a baseball game in every US city where there is a Major League Baseball team, he told People.

After Reiner's passing, the Dodgers paid tribute to him in a post on X.

"The Dodgers express our deep sorrow and share our condolences over the passing of longtime fan Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele."

  9. Trump faces Republican pushback on Reiner postpublished at 19:18 GMT 15 December 2025

    Bernd Debusmann Jr
    Reporting from the White House

As we reported earlier, President Trump took to Truth Social to criticise Reiner, saying - without evidence - that he and his wife "reportedly" died "due to the anger he caused others" with his "Trump Derangement Syndrome".

Reiner was a lifelong Democrat and frequent critic of Trump's.

Trump's comments were swiftly condemned by lawmakers from both sides of the US political spectrum - including some Republicans.

Among those to criticise Trump's comments was Georgia Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene - a once staunch defender of the president who has recently become a critic.

"This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies," she wrote on X, adding it should be "met with empathy".

Kentucky Republican Thomas Massie, another Republican who often criticises Trump, said the president's post was "inappropriate and disrespectful".

"I guess my elected GOP colleagues, the VP, and White House staff will just ignore it because they’re afraid? I challenge anyone to defend it," he added.

On X, a debate is under way about Trump's comments, with many arguing that it stood in stark contrast to Reiner's remarks earlier this year that Charlie Kirk's murder was an "absolute horror" and "beyond belief".

  10. Joe Biden offers condolencespublished at 18:52 GMT 15 December 2025

Rob Reiner's romance with his wife Michele changed the ending of one of his most famous films, "When Harry Met Sally".

"Originally, Harry and Sally didn’t get together. But then I met Michele and I thought: OK, I see how this works," he told the Guardian in 2018.

Reiner met Michele through the movie's director of photography, who invited her to set one day.

The director told the Guardian that he had planned to call actress Michelle Pfeiffer for a date when his colleague protested.

"You're not going to call her, you're going to marry my friend Michele Singer,” Reiner recalled his friend saying.

Before their deaths, the two were married for 36 years.

  20. Analysis

Trump's comments about Reiner are shockingpublished at 15:30 GMT 15 December 2025

    Anthony Zurcher
    North America correspondent

Donald Trump has made his share of derogatory and callous statements about his critics and political adversaries over the course of his 10 years in the national political spotlight. He has reached a point where comments that would once be headline-generating controversies if uttered by an American leader now barely register a ripple.

Trump’s Truth Social post attributing Rob Reiner’s death to his "Trump derangement syndrome" – suggesting that the famous Hollywood director and actor’s political views somehow contributed to his possible murder – is still startling, given the lack of evidence so far from police.

Trump’s statement comes in the wake of efforts by his own administration – and some conservatives – to punish anyone on the left who suggested the assassination of Charlie Kirk was deserved or a consequence of his at times divisive political views.

Trump, whose approval numbers have dropped substantially in recent months, is in danger of being out of step with a public that may expect – or hope for – expressions of empathy or grace from their president, even when a tragedy involves an outspoken critic.

At least today, they will get neither.
