There were well over 1,000 people in attendance tonight, NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon says, celebrating the Jewish holiday of Hannukah.

  9. Hanukkah event was in full swing just before shooting occuredpublished at 10:40 GMT 14 December 2025

    Tessa Wong
    Reporting from Bondi Beach

The shooting took place in a lively and crowded area of the northern part of Bondi Beach.

The Hanukkah event was held on a grassy area behind the beach, by a footbridge which people could use to cross over to the beach - and which the shooters had apparently used as a vantage point.

Just an hour before the shooting, I had crossed that bridge and saw the event in full swing - a crowd of at least 200, loud music, activity stations including a climbing wall.

There was a metal barrier set up all around the event, and people had to go in and out through a gate with what looked like bag checks, but there appeared to be minimal security overall.

Video shows man wrestling gun from Bondi beach attackerpublished at 10:36 GMT 14 December 2025

    By Benedict Garman

An extraordinary verified video appears to show a man tackling one of the gunmen, taking his gun and turning it back on him, forcing him to retreat.

The attacker is standing beneath a palm tree less than 50m (164 feet) from the small pedestrian bridge where we previously verified videos of two attackers firing guns, and where at least one of the gunmen died after a shootout with police.

He is aiming and shooting in the opposite direction and doesn’t notice the man hiding behind a parked car.

The man leaps out and grapples with the gunman from behind, before wrestling the weapon off him. The gun goes off again as they struggle. He then pushes the attacker to the ground and turns the gun back on him. The attacker retreats.

The member of the public then puts the gun down and raises his hands - appearing to show police he is not one of the shooters.

Nearby on the bridge, another gunman continues firing. It’s unclear who or what he is aiming at.

As the video continues, a pedestrian appears to be injured and flees the scene, and a policeman arrives behind the attackers and begins to fire at them.

As we've been reporting, New South Wales police say nine people are confirmed dead, as well as a man believed to be one of the shooters.

The second alleged shooter is in a critical condition, police say.

Currently a further 11 people are reportedly injured, including two police officers, they add.

There have been no reports of any other incidents in Sydney that are connected to this shooting, police say, and they are asking the public to not share unconfirmed rumours.

  13. Deadliest shooting since world-leading gun reformspublished at 10:12 GMT 14 December 2025

    Tiffanie Turnbull
    BBC News, Sydney

With police confirming nine civilians are dead, this attack has become the deadliest shooting in this country since the Port Arthur attack rocked the nation.

In 1996, 35 people were killed, and scores were hurt, when a lone gunmen opened fire at a historic site in Tasmania.

That attack was a turning point, famously prompting the government to introduce some of the world's strictest gun control measures. There was a gun buyback scheme, and increased checks on owners, and attacks radically dropped.

We've only had a handful of mass shootings since, most of them horrific acts of domestic violence - not public place attacks like today.

This is an unfamiliar, and devastating, shock for Australia.

Video on social media shows gunmen shooting on bridge next to playgroundpublished at 10:06 GMT 14 December 2025

    By Benedict Garman

Very graphic video is emerging on social media showing the aftermath of the scene at Bondi Beach.

A verified video which has appeared on social media shows two gunmen firing from a small bridge which crosses from the carpark on Campbell Parade towards the beach itself.

The bridge is just 50m (164 feet) from the children’s park, Bondi Park Playground.

A separate video, also verified, shows several policemen on the same bridge. One appears to be administering CPR to a motionless man as someone shouts "he’s dead, he’s dead".

Another motionless man is having his shirt cut off with scissors. There are bloodstains on the floor and an armoured vest is discarded nearby along with at least eight bullet casings. It’s not certain if the men on the floor are the same people seen firing in the other video.

Someone is vomiting at the scene and is advised to "take a walk".

Further verified videos shows hundreds of beachgoers screaming and running through Bondi Beach Park as gunshots continually ring out.

BBC Verify is continuing to examine footage emerging from the scene.

  15. Eyewitness told gunmen to put their guns downpublished at 09:59 GMT 14 December 2025

    Katy Watson
Australia correspondent, reporting from Bondi Beach

I spoke to two eye witnesses who wouldn’t give me their names and didn’t want to be filmed, but one showed me a video he filmed of the two gunmen on a bridge just a few metres from where I’m standing now.

He had come for dinner at Bondi and the restaurant was full, so he had gone for a walk when the shooting started. He thought they were fireworks, but then was told to come in because of danger.

He tells me he said to the gunmen to put the guns down and they ignored him.

  17. Locals in shock as they await updatespublished at 09:41 GMT 14 December 2025

    Tessa Wong
    Reporting from Bondi Beach

The sun has set on Bondi and the area is still swarmed with police cars while a police helicopter does its rounds above.

Worried locals are still on the street corners right by the police cordon. A few have been crying.

I spoke briefly to a woman earlier who was deeply anxious as her teenage daughter was stuck at a surf club in the locked-down area.

Others have been trying to get across the cordon to reach their loved ones.

Everyone here appears to be in shock.

  18. Around 20 shots rung out, then helicopters began circlingpublished at 09:33 GMT 14 December 2025

    Tabby Wilson
    Reporting from Bronte

I was at Bronte Beach this afternoon, as is my usual post-work pastime, when I heard a long series of bangs - by my best estimate, around 20.

Nobody seemed particularly concerned - perhaps they were fireworks?

It was only once we started to see helicopters circling the two beaches north of us - Tamarama and Bondi - that we started to think something might be awry. And then texts started flooding in about reports of a shooting.

  19. Police confirm multiple fatalities and two shooters 'neutralised'published at 09:20 GMT 14 December 2025
    Breaking

There are multiple fatalities following the shooting at Bondi Beach, New South Wales police has confirmed. They have not provided an update about how many people have died.

Police say two shooters have been "neutralised", while there is an active police scene to clear the area of suspected improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Two police officers are reportedly injured, although the severity of their injuries is unknown. Police also said it is not known at this stage if the incident is connected to the Hanukkah event taking place on the beach.
