  15. Antisemitism 'a real concern' in Australia, says Jewish journalistpublished at 18:39 GMT 14 December 2025

Amie Liebowitz wears a black jumper and headphones as she appears on a Zoom call

Amie Liebowitz, an Australian Jewish journalist who reports on antisemitism, tells BBC News that rising antisemitism in Australia is a "real concern" for the community.

    • As a reminder, New South Wales authorities have said the Bondi Beach shooting was "designed to target Sydney's Jewish community"

While Jewish people make up a very small proportion of Australia's population, Liebowitz says many live in Bondi. "It's known for its Jewish bakeries and kosher restaurants and Jewish schools," she says.

"This isn't some false flag or conspiracy theory, this is real," she adds. Last year, the government appointed a special envoy to combat antisemitism, external after data showed a 700% rise in incidences since the start of the Israel-Gaza war on 7 October 2023.

"I hope that in the days to come people really recognise the amount of antisemitism that we have gone through as a community and things change," says Liebowitz.

Mass shootings such as the attack at Bondi Beach today are rare in Australia - it is the country's deadliest since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996.

The deadly attack in Tasmania nearly 30 years ago left 35 people dead and was a seismic moment for Australia, prompting the government to introduce some of the world's strictest gun control measures.

Rapid-fire weapons such as semi-automatic rifles and pump-action shotguns were banned.

A 28-day waiting period was introduced during which a prospective buyer's background is checked. And people had to start providing a "justifiable reason" for owning a gun which, unlike the US, did not include self-protection.

In addition, a government buyback scheme took 650,000 legal and banned firearms out of circulation. An amnesty allowed owners to surrender their guns, either to the police or to be destroyed.

There are still terrible incidents involving firearms in Australia but to have one on the scale of what happened on Sunday night is unfamilar, shocking and utterly devastating.
