Scotland's busiest airport was brought to a halt this morning after an IT issue grounded all flights. It was only about an hour before Edinburgh Airport said flights were resuming, but some knock-on effects continue.

    Here's how it unfolded:

    • Just before 09:30 GMT, the airport announced that no flights were operating there due to an IT issue affecting its air traffic control provider - Air Navigation Solutions (ANSL)

We're bringing our live coverage to a close now, but you can keep up with the latest developments in our news story.

I’ve just arrived in Bristol on one of the first flights out of Edinburgh Airport after they got systems up and running again.

I was on the 08:55 flight to meet up with friends in Bath and Gloucester for the weekend. We were due to taxi to the runway when the captain came on the intercom to say there was a “bit of an unprecedented situation”.

He told us he didn’t have much detail, but it seemed that air traffic control systems for the whole airport had gone down.

As he didn’t know how long the issue would take to fix, he decided to keep us on the plane until things became clearer.

Those who wanted to get off the plane and find another method of travel were allowed to do so, but the captain advised that we would probably get there quicker by just waiting. This turned out to be right.

We sat on the tarmac with the plane doors open for around two hours before the news came through that we would be on our way as one of the first flights to leave.

In the end we arrived in Bristol only 90 minutes late, so it was worth sitting there and being ready to go.

  3. 'We’re trying to amuse ourselves for the next 10 hours'published at 13:03 GMT 5 December 2025

    Margot and Iver Morton

Margot and Iver Morton are facing a 10-hour wait in Edinburgh Airport before their rearranged flight to Gatwick tonight.

The couple, from Dundee, were preparing to head to London to deliver Christmas presents to their teenage grandchildren when their flight was cancelled.

Iver says: “It was most unexpected. We’ve been left to fend for ourselves and it’s not been an easy process.

"Our original flight was at 10:25 and our new flight takes off at 21:00. We’re trying to amuse ourselves for the next 10 hours."

Margot says: "We’ve got to cart all these presents with us so it’s easier for us to just stay here. We’re not as young and fit as we used to be."

  4. 'My flight was preparing to land, then we were diverted'published at 12:36 GMT 5 December 2025

Lizzie is travelling home to Edinburgh from London, where she works during the week. Her flight was diverted to Aberdeen where she is now waiting for a train back to Edinburgh.

"We were probably about 20 minutes until landing, the announcement had just been made we were preparing to land," she tells the BBC.

She says the captain then told them there was a problem with the system at Edinburgh, and that they would be diverting to Aberdeen.

"We were offered the chance to fly back down to Edinburgh, but it wouldn’t be until 14:00 GMT. So a lot of us have made the choice to go down to Aberdeen train station," she says, adding her airline says it will reimburse them for the rest of their journey.

  5. The latest on diverted and cancelled flightspublished at 12:14 GMT 5 December 2025

So far, 11 planes have been diverted from Edinburgh. Flights have resumed, but it’s not yet clear if those 11 will return to land there.

Fifteen outbound flights are delayed and there are seven confirmed cancellations.

    The cancellations are:

    • 11:40 to Paris
    • 11:55 to Bristol
    • 12:00 to Belfast
    • 12:30 to Amsterdam
    • 12:45 to Frankfurt
    • 12:50 to Luton
    • 15:25 to Belfast City

The airport says the situation is “fluid” and further disruption is still possible.

  6. What are your rights if your flight is delayed or cancelled?published at 11:50 GMT 5 December 2025

The IT issues prompting Edinburgh Airport to halt all flights have now been resolved – but there is likely to be a knock-on impact with continued delays.

As a passenger, you have certain rights if your flight has been affected.

When flights are delayed or cancelled, airlines have a duty to look after you – including providing meals and accommodation where necessary.

If your flight is covered by UK law and is cancelled – your airline must let you choose between either getting a refund or being booked on to an alternative flight.

Compensation however depends on the reason for the cancellation – and passengers will not be entitled to compensation for issues caused by "extraordinary circumstances".

Passengers will be unlikely to be entitled to compensation from today's disruption as the issues were caused by a tech problem.

There's more detail on passenger rights in our explainer.

  7. Air traffic help offered to Edinburgh Airportpublished at 11:35 GMT 5 December 2025

The National Air Traffic Services (NATS) has offered its support to Edinburgh Airport to manage disruption.

Speaking during the outage, the organisation said it would "work closely with the airlines impact and support as best we can".

There are several certified air traffic control organisations in the UK.

As we've been reporting, the organisation that provides services to Edinburgh Airport and experienced an IT issue this morning is Air Navigation Solutions (ANSL).

There was around an hour of confusion.

Announcements informing passengers of an IT failure with air traffic control meaning no flights in or out, while screens told them to go to gates.

It wasn't looking good when some cancellations were announced – those headed to Barcelona will be disappointed.

There was collective relief, however, when a push notification from the airport spread that flights were resuming.

I'll be on a short flight to Belfast and will have a relatively short delay, but I'm sparing a thought for those going further afield.

Those hoping to go to New York have been told the plane they were waiting on has ended up in Dublin.

  9. Flights resume after IT issue forces runway closure - a recappublished at 11:16 GMT 5 December 2025

Passengers travelling from Edinburgh Airport are once again preparing for take off, after an IT issue caused the temporary closure of the Scottish transport hub's runway.

How it started: At 09:29, the airport issued a statement saying all flights had been halted "due to an IT issue with our air traffic control provider". Teams were working to find a resolution as soon as possible, it added.

Delays and diversions: Some planes bound for Edinburgh were diverted to Glasgow, while a Delta Airlines plane from New York changed course to Dublin. Passengers in planes due to take off were left on the tarmac for more than an hour while they waited for a fix.

Runway reopens: Edinburgh Airport announced that flights had resumed at 10:39. But the knock-on effect of the closure has left many planes cancelled, and some delayed.

What happened? The airport says the IT issue was localised and not related to a wider web outage that saw LinkedIn and Zoom go offline earlier this morning.

A passenger travelling from Birmingham says it's not just outbound flights that are being affected.

"I was due to fly to Edinburgh from Birmingham at 09:45 and was advised there was slush and fog on the runway," they tell the BBC.

"I found out via Facebook that it was actually an IT issue," she says, adding she was advised to wait 45 minutes for an update from the captain.

"An hour later, no update. Passengers were then offered the chance to leave the aircraft with no return to the plane," the passenger adds.

"We have now been told we should be taking off within the next hour."

    Liv McMahon
    Technology reporter

Edinburgh Airport says, external today's problems have been "due to IT issue with our air traffic control provider".

It's also told people asking about it on X that the issue is "localised" – suggesting it has only impacted its own systems or infrastructure, rather than other sites.

They've also told us it isn't related to a wider web outage, caused by issues with web infrastructure firm Cloudflare, which saw several popular apps like LinkedIn and Zoom fall offline earlier this morning.

Beyond that, we don't know much technical detail about what's happened, only that it's caused lots of disruption for passengers and those travelling to and from the airport.

Felicity from Swindon says she's "gutted" as the delays mean she will now miss her youngest child's last nativity play.

"My youngest is in her last nativity and due to the delays I can't make it home on time," she tells me, having travelled to Edinburgh for a work meeting.

Felicity says she's been sat waiting for an hour and a half, with many on the plane having missed connections. The plane is now in a queue to get off the runway.

"Just been told we can go as the issue is resolved," Felicity says.

  13. If one bit of air travel tech fails - it falls like dominospublished at 10:59 GMT 5 December 2025

    Tom Gerken
    Technology reporter

If this outage today feels somewhat familiar to you, there's a good reason.

In August this year, United Airlines had what it called a "technology issue" that grounded flights. One month earlier, Alaska Airlines had an IT issue which cancelled them.

And of course, a year and a half ago, a significant issue with cyber security firm CrowdStrike grounded thousands of flights globally.

The reality is that air travel is complicated. The tech which keeps everything working interacts in all sorts of ways, whether it's checking the weight of the plane or – as appears to be the case here – how air traffic control functions.

If one single bit of tech fails, it's like dominos.

And as we know from previous outages, even when the problem is finally resolved, it will still take a while to bring everything back.

Craig tells BBC Your Voice he's been sat at Edinburgh Airport since 08:30 but that planes are now taking off

He says the cabin crew say planes are on the move slowly, and that they reckon it's 20-25 minutes before their flight leaves.

"Lots of movement now with ground staff around the planes," he adds.

Steven Faughnan boarded a Ryanair flight from Edinburgh Airport that was due to take off at 09:05 for Bergamo, Italy.

He tells me passengers boarded the plane at 08:30 for a 09:05 take-off. "The pilot announced there was a small delay due to technical problems at the airport," Steven says.

"About five minutes later he announced that it will be at least an hour," he continues.

"The pilot has just announced there is no update at the moment from the airport

"So who knows, and we are still stuck on the tarmac," he tells me.
