Clements stopped in the lay-by overnight, in a bid to get some food from a vendor, but they have failed to turn up.

A number of rail services across the East Midlands have been affected by Storm Goretti in the past 24 hours.

There are currently no services operating from Birmingham towards Nottingham, Manchester or Cardiff, with only a limited service running on other routes.

Nick Westcott, CrossCountry's service delivery director, said the past day had been "extremely challenging" for both workers and customers.

"Storm Goretti has had a significant impact on the CrossCountry network, particularly across the West Midlands," he said.

    A snowy train

"Heavy snowfall in the Birmingham area resulted in several trains being stranded and prevented access to our depot, meaning many trains were unable to refuel overnight.

"Ongoing difficulties for crews travelling into Birmingham have further affected operations.

"Customers are strongly advised to check before travelling; tickets dated for travel today can be used on CrossCountry services up to and including Monday 12 January."

"I gritted the roads near me off my own back last week, mainly so I could gain access to my own drive," Gill says.

  15. A slushy journey to school in Derbyshirepublished at 10:10 GMT 9 January

    Vanessa Clarke
    Education reporter

It's been a tricky start to the day for schools in some of the worst affected areas. Many head teachers have been up early, weighing up whether it is safe to open their doors this morning.

Parents have been checking their phones for updates confirming whether schools are open, running a delayed start, or scrapping classes altogether for today.

Here in Glossop in Derbyshire, it's been a slushy commute. Pupils arrived at the school gate in their wellies, hats and gloves hoping the snow will last so they can build a snowman at breaktime.

    Jakki Rogers

Jakki Rogers, head teacher of St Luke's primary school in Glossop, says she was up at 05:00 this morning discussing with other local head teachers what the situation was and checking the forecasts.

Some of the teachers in the school have a long commute and she was keen to make sure they could all get safely to work.

    BBC Weather

We've got some official snow depths from Met Office weather stations after the overnight snow from Storm Goretti.

    • 16cm - Lake Vyrnwy, Powys
    • 8cm - Nottingham
    • 7cm - Sennybridge, Powys
    • 3cm - Shawbury, Shropshire
    • 2cm - Coleshill, Warwickshire

However, official snow observations are quite limited across the UK, so this perhaps doesn't give the full picture of the snow situation this morning.

Our BBC Weather Watchers are sending us lots of pictures of snow cover right across the Midlands, parts of Wales and into the Peak District - and over higher ground there have been significant accumulations.
