US defense secretary to speak shortlypublished at 11:53 GMT 10 March

I’m in the Pentagon press room where the spotlights are on two empty podiums set for Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen Dan Caine.
This morning I’d expect them to echo some of what we got from Trump last night. Likely there will be more of Hegseth’s characteristically belligerent rhetoric and his sense of overwhelming American supremacy.
But given Trump’s mixed signals, it will be interesting to hear what the defense secretary says about the timing of any potential end to the war.
As much as the administration projects the opposite, it takes two sides to stop the fighting.
The administration is clearly spooked by the febrile markets responding to the crisis for energy transit. So I wonder if we’ll get more from Hegseth to try to settle oil prices, perhaps on potential military activity in or around the Strait of Hormuz.
- We are expecting to hear from Hegseth and Caine at 12:00 GMT (08:00 local time) at the Pentagon. We will bring you live updates and you can watch live by pressing play at the top of the page.
