European leaders present united front on Iran, eventuallypublished at 12:44 GMT 5 March

    Paul Kirby
    Europe digital editor

Six days into the war and more EU leaders have come forward with promises of defence aid to Cyprus and allies in the Gulf.

Two days ago, Greece, the UK and France said they were sending ships and air defences to Cyprus after drones were fired at the RAF base at Akrotiri on the island. Now they've been joined by Italy and Spain - and the Netherlands is considering aid too.

Albeit rather slowly, a united front has begun to emerge among key Nato allies in Europe. There was an initial reluctance to get involved in Italy and especially Spain, which has refused to allow the US to use shared airbases at Morón and Rota to attack Iran.

Spain's defence minister said the frigate Cristóbal Colón was joining its allies to show "commitment to the defence of the European Union and its eastern border".

That's a very different message from France which has just agreed to authorise US warplanes to use its bases "temporarily", because they provide "protection for our partners in the Gulf".

Condemning Iran's "reckless" decision to bombard its neighbours, Italy's Giorgia Meloni said if US planes wanted to use bases in Italy for bombing missions, it would have to be authorised by both the government and parliament.

Judging from today's communique from France, Italy and Greece, European allies also want to ensure the safety of shipping in the Red Sea as much as they want to show solidarity in the Eastern Med.

New satellite imagery shows damage to Iranian air force HQpublished at 12:35 GMT 5 March

    By Paul Brown

Satellite images shared with BBC Verify reveal further damage to Iranian military and leadership sites, as well as damage to a high-rise residential building in Bahrain.

The images, captured by intelligence firm Vantor yesterday, include a view of the Iranian Air Force headquarters in western Tehran, where damage is evident in at least four locations and multiple buildings have been affected.

There is similar damage evident at missile sites in Garmdarah on the outskirts of Iran’s capital and Khorramabad in the country’s west. Tunnel entrances and other infrastructure appear to have been hit at both sites.

The images also include results of apparent Iranian retaliation, with a view of the Breaker Tower in the Bahraini city of Seef, which was reportedly struck in a drone attack on Saturday. The image shows large black burn marks on the upper floors of the 35-storey apartment building.

  7. IDF says new wave of Iranian missiles targeting countrypublished at 12:16 GMT 5 March
    Breaking

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) says it has identified more missiles launched towards the country from Iran.

In a post on social media it says defensive systems are working to intercept them and a warning has been sent to phones in relevant areas.

People who get an alert have been told to remain in a protected space until further notice.

The large spikes in oil and gas prices have stabilised at significantly higher levels over the past 24 hours.

Market gas prices are about 80% up from where they were at the beginning of the week, and crude oil prices are more than 10% up.

But the economic dimension to this conflict is evolving in a way that could hit the world in new ways.

The key question is whether there is now a concentrated and strategic effort to target energy and economic infrastructure in the region, on both sides of this war.

This morning, Ras Laffan, the biggest liquefied natural gas facility in the world, shut down in Qatar. This process takes two weeks to turn around.

In Asia, some facilities that receive LNG and turn it back into gas may also need to close without constant and expected flows from the Gulf.

Right now the focus is on jet fuel, which is difficult to store, and has low stockpiles. The market price has more than doubled, as markets bet on a severe shortage.

Asian refiners of jet fuel are now moving to limit exports and horde supplies - which marks another problem for the airline industry, assuming passenger jets in the region resume operations soon.

  9. Several European nations sending naval assets to protect Cypruspublished at 12:03 GMT 5 March

Several European countries are sending naval assets to protect fellow EU member Cyprus, after a British military base there was hit by a drone.

Italy's Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has said that Italy would send "naval assets" to protect Cyprus - along with Spain, France and the Netherlands.

Crosetto said the deployment would occur in the coming days.

In the last hour, French President Emmanuel Macron's office says he called Italian and Greek leaders and they agreed to send military assets to Cyprus.

Earlier, sirens rang out on the Mediterranean island for 10 minutes due to a threat reported near RAF Akrotiri.

  10. Ballistic missile and six drones hit UAE, defence ministry sayspublished at 12:00 GMT 5 March
    Breaking

The UAE's defence ministry says it has intercepted and destroyed six ballistic missiles and 131 drones today - but adds a missile and six drones fell inside the country.

It says that 196 ballistic missiles have been detected since "the start of the blatant Iranian aggression" on Saturday, adding eight cruise missiles have also been detected and destroyed.

Three people have been killed, all of whom are foreign nationals from Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh, the ministry says, adding that 94 people have been injured since the attacks began.

A security alert was triggered at Akrotiri at around 12:30 local time (10:30 GMT) on Thursday, with sirens sounding in the area and warning messages sent to residents nearby.

The area is home to a UK military base that was hit by a drone on Sunday.

People in the Kourion area received a message on their phones saying: "There is an ongoing security threat. Please remain indoors and stay in place until further official notice. Move away from windows and take cover behind or beneath substantial, solid furniture. Please await further instruction."

The alarm lasted for around ten minutes before being lifted.

Cyprus government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis later said authorities had investigated information about a possible object, but there was no indication that it was heading towards the British bases.

UK Defence Secretary John Healey is visiting Cyprus today and has shared a picture of him meeting his counterpart.

The British Embassy in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has urged British citizens to "move indoors and remain inside".

"You should stay indoors or go to the nearest safe building", the embassy says in a statement on X, which it says applied from 13:00 local time (09:00 GMT).

"Stay away from windows. An interior stairwell or a room with as few windows as possible may offer additional protection", it adds.

The embassy is advising British citizens to follow the instructions of the local authorities in the UAE.

I’ve just been to a residential building on the outskirts of Beirut that was struck late last night.

Residents looking through the wreckage say they believe no one was there at the time of the Israeli strike, which they say happened at around 22:45 local time (20:45 GMT).

Several people say they had left the building at the beginning of the week and were staying elsewhere because of safety concerns, noting that the area had been targeted in the past. They say they did not know or would not comment on what the target may have been last night.

“We moved away on Monday because of fears that something would happen. Today we were supposed to come for a shower and to pick up our stuff and we found this,” one resident at the wreckage with her husband this morning says.

“Thank god it was just our things and not us,” she adds.

The Israeli military has not yet commented on the strike, but has said it is targeting Hezbollah.

Iran's foreign ministry is accusing the US and Israel of deliberately targeting civilian areas with their strikes.

In a post on X, spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the strikes "reverberate through global markets, driving up energy prices, destabilizing currencies, and eroding the purchasing power of ordinary people around the world".

He added: "Yet for us Iranians, the cost is immeasurably higher: our people are being brutally slaughtered as the aggressors deliberately target civilian areas and any location they believe will inflict the maximum possible suffering and loss of life."

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said yesterday: "The United States armed forces do not target civilians."

Israel has said it is targeting military assets with "precision" to protect civilians, and accuses Iran of targeting civilians.

  16. Kurds in Iraq deny they have entered Iran: 'We cannot move if the air is not cleaned'published at 10:52 GMT 5 March

    Orla Guerin
Senior international correspondent in northern Iraq

Kurdish Iranian opposition parties in northern Iraq have roundly denied reports that some of their forces have crossed the border into Iran.

“This is not true. Do not believe it,” says Hanna Hussein Yazdan Pana, of the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK). “Not a single Peshmerga (fighter) has moved. No one moves alone."

She says six opposition groups - which recently formed a coalition - are coordinating their plans but need the Americans to pave the way for a move. She tells us nothing will happen this week.

"It’s not about the hours or days," she says. "We cannot move if the air above us is not cleaned. We need to see weapons depots [of the regime] being destroyed. Otherwise, it would be suicidal."

She calls for a no-fly zone to provide protection for Kurdish forces. "The regime is very brutal," she says, "and the most advanced weapon we have is a Kalashnikov."

There’s been growing speculation that President Trump wants Kurdish forces to join the war, to provide boots on the ground. The White House has denied a report that he is considering arming them.

This map shows the main region where Kurds live, often called Kurdistan (cultural/ethnic region, not an independent country). The section is highlighted in orange. The highlighted area spreads across parts of five countries. Turkey – southeastern Turkey has the largest Kurdish population. Iran – western Iran contains several Kurdish provinces. Iraq – northern Iraq is home to the autonomous Kurdistan Region. Syria – northern Syria has Kurdish-majority areas sometimes called Rojava. Armenia – a small section of western Armenia is highlighted. The source is CIA.

Verified video shows reported Iranian drone attack in Azerbaijanpublished at 10:41 GMT 5 March

    By Emma Pengelly

BBC Verify has reviewed footage showing reported Iranian drone attacks on an airport in Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan region, an autonomous exclave bordering Iran and Armenia.

In verified videos, we can see smoke billowing from the Nakhchivan International Airport building and firefighters dealing with a blaze.

In another video, filmed from the airport car park after the airport was hit, a drone crashes and causes an explosion nearby, in the vicinity of nearby Shakarabad village. In a final verified clip, we see the same fiery blast from a different angle.

Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry said one drone struck the terminal building of the airport while another fell near a school building in Shakarabad. Two civilians were injured, it added.

A large cloud of fire erupts in the distance following the deflagration of a missile. The video is shot from what appears to be a parking lot some distance away, three men observing the explosion

  20. Qataris don't want to take any chances amid explosionspublished at 10:13 GMT 5 March

    Barbara Plett Usher
    Reporting from Doha

Around midday in Doha we started hearing the rumble and bang of anti-aircraft fire. Alerts buzzed on our phones warning that the security threat was elevated, and the ministry of defense issued a statement saying Qatar was intercepting a missile attack.

It’s not clear if this is related to an evacuation order issued overnight to residents living near the US embassy. The interior ministry called this a “temporary precautionary measure.”

At any rate, the Qataris don’t want to take any chances.

The Iranians have been targeting American diplomatic missions, with strikes in Riyadh, Kuwait City and Dubai.

And earlier this week a missile hit the US al-Udeid military base in Qatar. In an angry phone call on Wednesday Qatar’s foreign minister told his Iranian counterpart that Iran was trying to drag its Gulf neighbours into a war that isn’t theirs.
