Over a thousand new marine species were discovered in a global project called The Ocean Census this past year.

在过去一年里，一项名为 “海洋普查” 的全球科研项目发现了一千多个海洋新物种。

Among them were crabs, sea urchins and a deep-sea ghost shark. There was also a bristle worm – found living in a 'glass castle' off the coast of Japan.

其中包括各种螃蟹、海胆，以及一种深海 “幽灵鲨”。此外还发现了一种刚毛虫，它们栖息在日本沿海一处宛若 “玻璃城堡” 的环境中。

A carnivorous 'death ball' sponge was also spotted in the South Atlantic.

It has spheres covered in microscopic, Velcro-like hooks designed to snag unsuspecting prey.

The findings were made at extraordinary depths of up to six and a half thousand metres. That's greater than the height of Everest Base Camp.

13 expeditions took place across the world, from Papua New Guinea all the way through to Antarctica. But what they found is only the beginning.

Estimates suggest we only know a tiny fraction of what's out there in our oceans.

"Are they a drop in the ocean? Well... There are thought to be up to two million species in the ocean, we've discovered over 250,000. So, whilst these discoveries are significant of course, over a 1,000 of them and every species matters, they do really mark only the beginning of our work."
