  1. Cypruspublished at 21:16 BST 9 May 2017

Cyprus' competitor this year is Hovig who clearly loves nothing more than a good trust fall. Here's hoping his backing dancers don't drop him, otherwise he's going to learn the real meaning of 'Gravity' very swiftly indeed.

Cyprus' song was written by none other than Thomas G:son. No that wasn't a typo, his surname is actually G:son.I'm going to write that again just to let it sink in; G:son.

Mega fans out there might recognise this (*ahem*) colon from 2012. He actually wrote the song 'Eurphoria' which won Sweden's Loreen the trophy in 2012. He also had 12 OTHER SONGS in the competition that year. Gee whizz G:son. Sitting atop all that song-writing talent is also an astounding head of hair. Here he is in the studio, sporting the smile of someone who has just cranked out 15 Euroviosn songs in a morning.

  3. Czech Republicpublished at 21:14 BST 9 May 2017

Also, no pressure, Martina but last year was the first time the Czech Republic ever managed to qualify for the final. Can she make it two years in a row? Well, one's thing for sure, she's got a BIG FAN in Hotel Manager Sean Derbyshire…

Martina Barta is nothing if not niche. Back home she is known for starring in a musical adaptation of Robin Hood she's also a very impressive French horn player who studied at the Jazz Institut Universität der Kunste in Germany (take THAT, Epic Sax Guy).

She also recently revealed she has a bit of a crush, external on Portugal's Salvador Sobral (well, who doesn't...). If they end up on a date though she's pretty likely to burst into song like a Disney princess if this video, external is anything to go by.

Here she is in a recent Instagram post simply captioned 'Me and My Horn'

Svala also one of about 90 ladies dressed entirely in white tonight. In case you're wondering there isn't some sort of polyamrous wedding going on backstage, Svala actually chose the outfit to symbolise 'a warrior and a fighter...we made it white becuase it represents light hope and positivity' as she explained in this enlightening video.

  6. Icelandpublished at 21:06 BST 9 May 2017

Crikey, those shoes...and those RIFFS! SLAAAAAAAY.

Svala is no stranger to a spot of vocal gymnastics and recently performed her very own cover of last year's winning Ukrainian song '1944.'

Whilst we're 'enjoying' another of Eurovision's famous comedy presenter routines, here's what you've been saying about the semi final so far.

Don't forget, this is the semi final that UK viewers CAN vote in, so you'll need to give this some serious thought please.

Eurovision is also in Svala's blood. Her father, Bo Halldorsson, represented Iceland in the competition in 1995. He made it through to the final and came 15th. Here he is belting out his song 22 years ago in a rather more subdued outfit.

  9. Icelandpublished at 21:03 BST 9 May 2017

Svala is one of the most Scandinavian people ever to have lived:

    • she's designed a clothing line for H&M in 2007
    • she was in an electronic synth band called 'Steed Lord'
    • she told Scott Mills (with Bjork-levels of kook) that she prepares for all her gigs by 'bathing in unicorn tears.'

Iceland have never, ever won Eurovision (Yohanna came close in 2009 but placing in 2nd) but Svala has a good old chance of getting into the final. Not only is she a judge on Iceland's version of The Voice, but she recently did a gig in front of an audience of 50,000 people in Copenhagen and smashed out an brilliant headline performance at Gay Pride San Francisco.

Oh good, an intensely gif-able sax break from Sergey now complete with 'Running Man' choreography. Janet Jackson is no doubt screaming at her diamond encrusted television in Los Angeles right now.

Some very intriguing choreography from the Moldovan men this year. Their signature 'floppy leg move' is the work of choregrapher, Yury Rybak. Epic Sax Guy had this to say about it in an interview with a Modovan news outlet, external

"He [Yury] proposed to use this step to make our dance more flashmob-like and memorable. We tested it on our families and friends. And seeing them smiling, we understood it would become the leitmotif of the whole choreography of our show. We hope not only Eurovision fans but also our own fans will like this movement."

Someone with a strong social sense of social justice even took time out of their day to create a 10 HOUR video dedicated entirely to this man and his thrusting woodwind instrument.

If you're wondering what to listen to next time you're on a long haul flight or waiting for HMRC to pick up the phone then this is the video for you (warning: it'll probably induce a nosebleed after 4 hours).

Finally, it's the moment we've all been waiting for... the reappearance of 'Epic Sax Guy' who is a key member of Moldova's entry this year.

If you've been living in a cave for the last 7 years and have just emerged, blinking into the sunlight then here's the lowdown on 'Epic Sax Guy.' His real name is Sergey Stepanov. He rose to fame in the 2010 Eurovision Song Contest when Sunstroke Project entered the competition with 'Run Away.' Although their performance made many people want to do just that they were actually the surprise hit of that competition, chalking up millions upon millions of YouTube hits and placing 22nd in the final.

For those of you feeling nostalgic, here's a video of that first performance when a modern internet legend was born...

Ughhh god, it's ANOTHER SIBLING. News just in - that violinist on stage is actually Kasia's brother.

He's called Mateusz and he's a violinist and composer by trade. Whatever happened to cheering from the sidelines wtih Mummy and Daddy? I wonder if she has any others trying to claw their way onstage and steal the limelight....? Well, if she does then the rules state that each competitor is only allowed to have maximum SIX PEOPLE on stage. Choose carefully Kasia.

  15. Polandpublished at 20:53 BST 9 May 2017

Next up is Kasia Mos from Poland. Kasia cares deeply about animal welfare which is a good thing too as she owns five dogs and two cats back home in Poland.

She *HATES* people wearing fur and has even dedicated this song 'Flashlight' to all animals that suffer.

Indeed, she cares so very deeply about this particular issue that she once appeared with her dog in a feature for Playboy Magazine in Poland. #savetheplayboybunnies

Greece's Demy does nothing by half measures. Not only is she a Eurovision songstress, she's also starring in 'Mamma Mia' in Athens (of course) and...*AND* studying law at university. What a trooper. (A Super Trooper?)

Like Portugal, Demy also has a pushy sibling trying to muscle in on the action; Demy's sister Romy Papadea co-wrote this song. God I imagine Christmas at the Papadea's house must be pretty torturous.

  19. Portugalpublished at 20:46 BST 9 May 2017

Speaking of which, Luisa (Salvador's sister, yellow anorak) actually wrote this song herself. She's got a pretty decent set of pipes as well and has released four albums in Portugal.

The siblings also resolutely refused to translate it into English, saying you can never get the true meaning of the song in any other language. We'll take your word for it, Luisa.

For those of you who don't speak Portuguese, this song is apparently about a couple where the woman has fallen out of love with the man. Salvador is singing that his love is SO BIG he can love enough for the both of them. Crikey.

  20. Portugalpublished at 20:45 BST 9 May 2017

Spare a thought for poor old Portugal. Their representative Salvador Sobral has had QUITE a time of it.

Right after winning the Portuguese final he had to be wheeled into hospital to have some hernias removed. Oof, clealy those high notes took their toll.

Don't worry though, his lovely sister Luisa filled in for him at the dress rehearsal last week with some expressive 'Evita on the balcony' hand gestures to keep us all going. WHO SANG IT BETTER?
