How is the EU referendum campaign going for you? Following the campaign can sometimes feel like being caught in the middle of a particularly vicious food fight. One politician pops up and tells you that leaving the EU would be much better for your health, or security, or wallet. Then another pops up and tells you the opposite. Then they trade some “facts” or “statistics” that “prove” their case. Then… well, if you’re anything like me, you’re left wondering how on earth to decide which side was right.

That’s why we’ve taken a deep breath, applied some cold towels, and decided to produce a series of special shows tackling the big questions about the biggest political decision in a generation. Over the coming weeks we’ll be looking at what Brexit would mean for security, the economy, immigration, and our relationship with the rest of the world. We’ll also be asking how well the institutions of the EU work for us.

But we’re starting tonight with sovereignty – a rather more abstract idea but perhaps the one that more than any other animates those who believe Britain must break off its 43-year loveless marriage with Brussels. We’ll be asking what sovereignty really means (in case you were wondering what Evan Davis was doing hanging from a platform in the middle of the North Sea, external), how much of it we have really given up – and where we would be left if we take it back.

As in each of these special shows, we’ll hear from a leading representative of each camp, but we’ll be testing their arguments with help from a panel of experts, and gauging their impact on a group of undecided voters. Tonight our experts include a leading barrister (who may or may not have convinced a prominent mop-haired Etonian political figure to back Brexit), a former European Court of Justice jurist, an ex-civil servant and an eminent historian.

I don’t suppose we’ll avoid a food fight but perhaps when all the pies have been thrown you’ll feel a tiny bit clearer about one of the central issues in this campaign. Enjoy!
