The Last Night kicks off with new, youthful music commissioned specially for the Proms. Composer Tom Harrold, 25, wrote Raze for the combined forces of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Proms Youth Ensemble made up of 45 young players aged 14-21.

Titles are almost consistently the final decisions I make as part of the writing process, so it was highly unusual that I decided on Raze as the title before the piece had even been sketched.

I rarely intend to write music with a particular narrative, but in this instance I used the title as a 'way in' to the work. Raze means 'clear the way', 'overthrow', 'knock down' – exactly the impact this piece is designed to have at a noisy, carnival-like concert such as the Last Night of the Proms.

The BBC Symphony Orchestra perform at more Proms than any orchestra. They opened the season on 15 July and always perform at the Last Night. Tonight, they are conducted this evening by Chief Conductor Sakari Oramo.
