No sooner had Buffy returned home after her spell hiding as an anonymous
waitress in the city (see 'Anne')
than she discovered a dead stray cat in the basement. At the same
time Joyce had hung an evil-looking Nigerian mask on the wall, not
realising that it has the power to resurrect the dead. Its powers
revive the cat, and then human corpses from Sunnydale’s twelve cemeteries!
The mask embodies the power of a demon, Ovu Mobani. If one of the
zombies puts it on, it will make them the demon incarnate. One of
Joyce’s friends, Pat, is killed as they battle the zombies. Reanimated,
she puts the mask on, but Buffy is able to destroy the demon by
driving a spade into the source of its paralysing power: its eyes.
