I once asked a customer to leave The Quill And Tassel because she was ugly. A scene ensued, of course, followed by a lawyer's letter. The whole weight of political correctedness came down upon my head. I was forced to write a letter of apology, in which I was obliged to drip with sincerity. What hurt more than anything was seeing my restaurant mis-spelled in the Bray Gazette: "The Quill and Tassle." What next? "Artychoke"? "Truffel"?
The point is, she had a face like a squashed tomato. And I'd never, ever, ever squash a tomato.
